    It's so crazy to think that like a year ago I would just eat whatever, like plain white pasta, smothered in butter with some chicken, or just chocolate cereal and milk for breakfast and I considered that a meal. But now after going vegan I watch informative videos like this and really think about what I'm eating and am definitely getting far more nutrients and less of the bad stuff. And yet, my parents are more concerned about what I eat now than before ... it baffles me.

      Same story here. I ate McDonalds every day for an entire year. Got very sick and was loaded with acne. Now I am on a whole foods vegan diet and my parents tell me it is unhealthy and I eat too much carbs. Lol, oh well. They will see some day, hopefully. Honestly I am concerned about their health...

    I came from SAD to WFPB after watching FoK. I'm youngish (34) and convinced my husband to join me in giving up meat, dairy and vegetable oil. We were pretty good for the first month or 2, but we've gotten a little lax (about the vegetable oil) this 3rd month. We find ourselves asking many of the questions you addressed in this video (particularly about nut butters and plant milk) so THANK YOU! Very informative! We both still have weight to lose, and your evidence reinforces my belief that we should continue to avoid highly processed junk like oil and overly processed carbs like tortillas, bread and pasta.

    I've been researching the vegan diet for a couple days now ever since watching 'What the Health' on Netflix last week. Very informative. I have not yet started the diet, although i am getting prepared. Just bought a few cookbooks, but we are finishing up the meats we bought recently and stocking up on the vegan diet foods to replace my unhealthy eating habits. I've started eating more fruits and vegetables this week than i ever have and hoping i can adhere to this lifestyle for a better future! The best part is not only am i bettering my health but saving livestock and the environment just by being more healthy! Never thought much of veganism until i watched the documentary. GREAT VIDEOS MIC! Keep em coming and keep me motivated!

      Just FYI meat has been part of my diet in just about every meal I have eaten my whole life, so this will be a challenge. I love burgers, brats, ribs, steak ,etc. but knowing how my mother passed away from cancer and the fact that she was also diabetic. She always as concerned about my health as well as her own and after losing her and knowing what i know now after watching 'What the Health' i don't think i could stay ignorant to the facts i learned without giving it a try and see how much my health will improve and hopefully never have to go through what she did by changing my eating habits.

    I just wanted to let you know that with olives, they have to be picked off the tree and then processed before eating. They aren't really eaten straight off of the tree because of the bitter fruit water.. it tastes so bad hahah. So the jars your buy in supermarkets aren't olives in their natural form

    Great video! I didn’t know lots of this, as a vegan whos on the lower end of healthy weight and overthinks a lot, its good to know how healthy stuff is and then just moderate amounts. Cleared up my confusion on smoothies and nut butters and syrup and just yep its not an all or nothing thing like my mind sometimes thinks! Slowly improving my diet but working on adding more healthy stuff instead of cutting out less healthy stuff as I’d like to put on some weight (often neglected in wfpb talk)

    TIGHT video brother!!! Sometimes we vegans begin to become so obsessed with this "Whole Foods" idea, that we lose sight of simply being reasonable. It's OK to consume some Sunflower Butter if you prefer it over Sunflower Seeds. People are getting too obsessed these days. Let's just focus on getting as many phytonutrients and Fiber in our diets, even if that means getting having an NB smoothie per day. As long as you don't down the drink, and you drink it over the course of 5-10 minutes, it's fine. It's better to get the extra (for ex) 2 servings each of Fruits and Veg in a Smoothie, than to avoid it over concerns of Fructose separating from the Fiber. However, people are confused over a smoothie versus Juicing. Juicing is another story since you're removing most of the fiber. So in that case, we obviously don't recommend it. Great job as always, Mic!

    now it's probably because I'm coming from a background of mental health issues( and I revisited this video), I appreciate the broad view without it losing it's point of looking at what a whole food is. Pointing out that there is a gradient of what foods make the "whole" food cut, while still holding to a level headed approach is really refreshing and encouraging.
    Looking at Grade A and Grade B tracks; addressing the health benefits to reversing disease and the mental health aspects of if you need to eat something not so great go ahead if you're in an airport.
    The fact that you are delving into topics that span into the mental health realm such as eating disorders and offering to interview someone...

    I'm still on the fence with smoothies. Does the fiber help or not in terms of spiking. If I recall, Dr. Greger seems to think they are fine drinking slowly. I didn't think about it in terms of calories related to spiking. Thanks for that info. And I"m really only thinking of green smoothies with bananas and berries. But unlike what you mention here, I'm interested in NITRIC OXIDE. Dr. Esselstyn says no smoothies for heart patients because the nitric oxide has to have the saliva mix with the greens first, and a smoothie hinders that process. Dr. Greger says something about a second chance for that to happen? So who do i believe?Will I get the nitric oxide effect or not. I was having a green smoothie every day until Esselstyn said no. But now I wonder if I should return to that. Any thoughts? I have afib and even though it isn't curable, I believe heart healthy diet will make it more manageable long term.

    "The Postprandial Effect of Components of the Mediterranean Diet on Endothelial Function" actually goes on to state that type of fat, ie. saturated / omega-9 were likely responsible for the decrease in FMD, as canola oil and salmon which are high in Omega-3 had no statistical effect. This doesn't exactly support your "whole food > processed food" argument. The study protocol was to examine an effect of a high fat meal, containing either fish fat, olive oil fat, or canola oil fat on FMD. Previous study suggest that all three fat sources were cardio-protective, despite the decrease in FMD with olive oil.
    It's important to recognise this distinction when drawing conclusions on a real world diet, as the study purposely omits volume, fibre, fruits, vegetables etc. In reality, a proper meal, or even a meal recommended by the USDA or Health Canada suggest serving sizes of combined foods, which, whether processed or not, will have additive effects (ie. canola oil in a salad with bread, juice etc., will have a different effect than vegetables, canola oil, bread, or juice alone.)

    • @ginduf
      @ginduf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      protein is not an issue and no one needs to supplement protein because there is protein in all whole/lightly processed plant based foods. if you're eating enough, you are getting enough protein. even a potato has around 10 grams protein and all anyone needs a day is around 40-50 grams of protein. most people are taking in way too much protein in their diets. nutritionfacts.org/video/the-great-protein-fiasco/

    • @molly104
      @molly104 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      kokoro nagomu yes obviously you can get enough with whole plant foods but athletes for example have a higher requirement for protein so I was just asking what one would be safest

    • @Neiwun
      @Neiwun 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bodybuilders and athletes definitely need more protein than most people. Most bodybuilders will tell you that they need 1 g of protein per pound of body weight. But here is a study showing that it's actually between 0.54 g and 0.77 g of protein per pound of body weight, with the lower end being appropriate for endurance athletes and the higher protein intake being appropriate for strength athletes.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23107527
      Here's another study showing that the protein requirement is between 0.59 g and 0.82 g of protein per pound of body weight in order to "maximize muscle protein synthesis." But people who want to "prevent lean mass losses during periods of energy restriction to promote fat loss" (such as after finishing a bulk and starting a cut) should aim to get between 0.82 g and 0.91 g of protein per pound of body weight.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22150425
      So I'd say just eat lots of beans. Legumes inhibit the activity of xanthine oxidase, which is the main contributor of free radicals during exercise.

    Would you please do a video on the surging trend on "super-foods", so-called nutrition power foods, such as maca/spirulina/acai powders, immunity powders and so on that people throw into their smoothies? Are they still "wholefoods" like matcha powder or just processed on a level similar to protein powder? There are also "healthy with natural ingredients" nutrition bars, snacks (i.e. baked apple crisps, freeze-dired edamame, Lara bars, etc.).

    I purchased some Ninja frying pans at Walmart. The large one was $40.00 . They work very well for oil free cooking. I put about 2-3 tablespoons of water in, add my favorite spices, jet them heat up, add the veggies , usually two cups chopped, soften them, and I have water on standby if I need more. I use medium high heat. They look brand new and I’ve had the small one a month or so.

    Hey Mic the Vegan! Thank you so much for all of your videos :D I have learned so much from tuning in. You said it was okay to ask questions so here's one for you if you don't mind. I have been vegan for about ten years now, and I usually air on the side of caution when it comes to processed foods. Recently, I have been learning more about the oil in my diet, and I have decided to cut out the coconut oil/sesame oil/olive oil. As of now there is one thing in my pantry that I look at with a side glance and that is coconut milk (canned, organic, from whole foods, usually use it to make some kind of curry or Thai style sauce). I think I've gotten way too comfortable using this stuff. Now that I’m thinking more about oils, I am also thinking about this coconut milk (which is pretty much just coconut fat) I am wondering if its effect on blood, cholesterol, and arteries is similar to its close relative coconut oil? Thanks again!

    Since going vegan, I've had trouble keeping fat off. But then again, I had less of a better chance beforehand. Maybe it's just because of getting older and messed up hormones. I've realized that a major positive result I've gotten from going vegan is MENTAL HEALTH! My depression has improved greatly, and suicidal thoughts aren't there anymore. 💚

    A video on water fasting and dry fasting would be rad if done by you! I know (largely thanks to you) juice fasting is counterproductive, but the limited science we DO have on water/dry/intermittent fasting looks very promising.

    Love these videos! Thank you for making them. I'm day three of transitioning from mostly carnivorous to lacto vegetarian. I'm wanting to slowly but surely transition to a grade B whole food lifestyle! **If you haven't already can you do a video discussing getting the best options while out of the home, like Starbucks... Olive Garden... etc... I have dinners with investors & clients a lot & im not sure how to still eat "normal" while eating out. Does that make sense?

    Fairly new subscriber and I so appreciate the information backed with research! Do you have a reliable source for finding out what foods are more appropriate for smoothies? I usually put in coconut milk, spinach, chias, pineapple, mango, fresh mint, and an orange. Wondering if the pineapple and mango are sugar spikers as well? Thank you!

    When you say "blenderized" is that using a juicer where it only produces juice or blenders too? I don't see how a blender would be a problem because its essentially "pre chewing" the food and you're still consuming all the parts of the fruit. In that case wouldn't you have to be careful not to over-chew fruit if you eat it whole?

    PESTICIDES....here's my question. am i better off buying/eating fruit and veggies that are not organic during some seasons to still get a large variety in or should i stick to the organic ones i can buy (off seasons) and wait until the others are available organic?

    Adding on to what you said about the smoothies: When you eat a piece of fruit (a banana, a bowl of fruit salad, etc.), it takes time. You take a bite...you take another bite. Your body has a bit of time to start processing it. Whenever you drink the fruit, first of all, you are probably consuming more than you would than if you were eating. Secondly, a lot of sugar is coming in quickly. Every bit of sugar that you consume that the body can't immediately use/process goes straight to the liver. There is a huge increase in fatty liver disease, including kids and skinny people.

    I've seen no evidence that refined sugar is bad when calories are controlled. My lifestyle means I don't have a lot of time to eat and I have to cycle to work and back every day so I use lots of refined sugar.

    I have a question for you (or anyone in this wonderful vegan community) I am vegan, and my boyfriend and I have been together for 3 years. He is not a vegan, in fact cheese is one of his absolute favorite things. I don't want to change him, or force him to see our views. But I really respect and love the way Mic explains the benefits of veganism. I am wondering what would be the best way to introduce veganism to my boyfriend in a postive and non-extremist way. Just so he can understand the risks of being a carnivore. What videos would you reccomend me to show him?

    • @bagiee1

      "Forks Over Knives", "Cowspiracy", "What The Health"...and also you can advice him to try some vegan cheese for a change...maybe he will like it.

    I don't understand how a smoothie could be bad for you when chewing it in your mouth kind of does the same thing before you swallow it, no?
    Btw obsessed with your vids. I feel so much more educated as a vegan after watching all these👍🏼❤️

      Also when you chew your food slowly and thoroughly like you should, your saliva mixes with it, which has a beneficial effect. Which is why some people "chew" their smoothies. Like the video said, bananas don't have the negative effect when blended. I have a smoothie every other day or so when I know I'm going to be active shortly after I drink it and they contain bananas, blueberries (which also blunt blood sugar/insulin spikes), blackberries, sometimes a couple of dates, and a bunch of greens. I've checked my blood sugar using a relatives monitor/tester and even just an hour and a half after drinking a large smoothie my blood sugar is really good. Also, my triglycerides/blood tests are perfect so I don't think the smoothies I drink are bad in any way.

    i do wonder about peanutbutter. the last few weeks i've been eating a lot of 100% peanutbutter (no added oil or suger, just peanut). i dip a banana in it and go through a 500 gram jar a week. perhaps i should scale that down a bit?

    Olive oil is refined but what if it's eaten with fiberous foods in a salad? Is the fibre "shared" when ingested in the same sitting?
