    It's so crazy to think that like a year ago I would just eat whatever, like plain white pasta, smothered in butter with some chicken, or just chocolate cereal and milk for breakfast and I considered that a meal. But now after going vegan I watch informative videos like this and really think about what I'm eating and am definitely getting far more nutrients and less of the bad stuff. And yet, my parents are more concerned about what I eat now than before ... it baffles me.

      Same story here. I ate McDonalds every day for an entire year. Got very sick and was loaded with acne. Now I am on a whole foods vegan diet and my parents tell me it is unhealthy and I eat too much carbs. Lol, oh well. They will see some day, hopefully. Honestly I am concerned about their health...

    It's easy to forget as a vegan that the general population really has no concept of 'whole foods.' When I talk about health and nutrition with other people, they're on such a different page to us... we were all in that mindset once. It's sad because these people manage their diets terribly as a result, and obesity across the western world resulting from people doing what they've always been told is right. Keep up the great videos mic., you are easily TH-cam's most promising vegan content creator and you're going to go faaaaar.

    • @AFSamizdat
      @AFSamizdat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually there is more evidence to suggest that despite dietary recommendations, even by government bodies, that a large portion of the population do not follow these recommendations. Even people who follow a vegan diet often come-up with deficiencies that people following a conventional diet will. People overall (ie. vegan versus non vegan), generally have a poor understanding of proper nutrition.

      @freedomfox2209 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You're trying too hard, Donald and it isn't working. Nobody has called anyone stupid, nobody has believed themselves to be superior. Saying that the population doesn't have a general concept of whole foods is undeniably the case. We live in an age where there are 1,000 diets recommended to people, and the vast majority of them are total bullshit. Whole foods plant-based is the only one proven to deliver better long-term health and yet it gets nothing like the air-time of things like Atkins or Paleo. Now crawl back under your bridge, you came here looking to 'call out' people who think they're better and you didn't find any, so you just had the argument you wanted to have anyway.

    Whole foods are a good principle, but to ease over from fully processed, I use things like salsa. I could not eat my rice and mashed pinto beans without salsa or some flavoring. I would like to modify my recipe by adding a very hot sauce and removing the salsa. That way, I can use less throughout the dish, and I believe, and use less salt and other things as a result. I need to have minimally processed hot sauce though.
    I have been a vegan for 2 weeks. I have a very static diet and do not require variety. It turns out I am never hungry as I was when eating junk food, diary and meats. Something about those causes my appetite to be too high for the number of calories consumed.
    I feel much better. I sleep better and I feel general well being and relaxation. It is likely my cholesterol is down significantly from unhealthy to healthy. My imagination is more vivid, and my thoughts are far more clear.
    You helped motivate me, Mic. Thanks to you and people like Dr. Mcdougall I have strong resolve to help myself and the planet.

    I came from SAD to WFPB after watching FoK. I'm youngish (34) and convinced my husband to join me in giving up meat, dairy and vegetable oil. We were pretty good for the first month or 2, but we've gotten a little lax (about the vegetable oil) this 3rd month. We find ourselves asking many of the questions you addressed in this video (particularly about nut butters and plant milk) so THANK YOU! Very informative! We both still have weight to lose, and your evidence reinforces my belief that we should continue to avoid highly processed junk like oil and overly processed carbs like tortillas, bread and pasta.

    now it's probably because I'm coming from a background of mental health issues( and I revisited this video), I appreciate the broad view without it losing it's point of looking at what a whole food is. Pointing out that there is a gradient of what foods make the "whole" food cut, while still holding to a level headed approach is really refreshing and encouraging.
    Looking at Grade A and Grade B tracks; addressing the health benefits to reversing disease and the mental health aspects of if you need to eat something not so great go ahead if you're in an airport.
    The fact that you are delving into topics that span into the mental health realm such as eating disorders and offering to interview someone...

    I've been researching the vegan diet for a couple days now ever since watching 'What the Health' on Netflix last week. Very informative. I have not yet started the diet, although i am getting prepared. Just bought a few cookbooks, but we are finishing up the meats we bought recently and stocking up on the vegan diet foods to replace my unhealthy eating habits. I've started eating more fruits and vegetables this week than i ever have and hoping i can adhere to this lifestyle for a better future! The best part is not only am i bettering my health but saving livestock and the environment just by being more healthy! Never thought much of veganism until i watched the documentary. I love burgers, brats, ribs, steak ,etc. but knowing how my mother passed away from cancer and the fact that she was also diabetic. She always as concerned about my health as well as her own and after losing her and knowing what i know now after watching 'What the Health' i don't think i could stay ignorant to the facts i learned without giving it a try and see how much my health will improve and hopefully never have to go through what she did by changing my eating habits.

    TIGHT video brother!!! Sometimes we vegans begin to become so obsessed with this "Whole Foods" idea, that we lose sight of simply being reasonable. It's OK to consume some Sunflower Butter if you prefer it over Sunflower Seeds. People are getting too obsessed these days. Let's just focus on getting as many phytonutrients and Fiber in our diets, even if that means getting having an NB smoothie per day. As long as you don't down the drink, and you drink it over the course of 5-10 minutes, it's fine. It's better to get the extra (for ex) 2 servings each of Fruits and Veg in a Smoothie, than to avoid it over concerns of Fructose separating from the Fiber. However, people are confused over a smoothie versus Juicing. Juicing is another story since you're removing most of the fiber. So in that case, we obviously don't recommend it. Great job as always, Mic!

I put about 2-3 tablespoons of water in, add my favorite spices, jet them heat up, add the veggies , usually two cups chopped, soften them, and I have water on standby if I need more. I use medium high heat. They look brand new and I’ve had the small one a month or so.

Are they still "wholefoods" like matcha powder or just processed on a level similar to protein powder? There are also "healthy with natural ingredients" nutrition bars, snacks (i.e. baked apple crisps, freeze-dired edamame, Lara bars, etc.).

    Btw obsessed with your vids. I feel so much more educated as a vegan after watching all these👍🏼❤️

      If you are interested in the recent research related to green smoothies, be sure to check out Dr. Greger's interesting Nutritionfacts videos on them from last year. It is fairly easy to optimize your nutrient intake without spiking your blood sugar. Health is Power - Cheers!

      Also when you chew your food slowly and thoroughly like you should, your saliva mixes with it, which has a beneficial effect. Which is why some people "chew" their smoothies. Like the video said, bananas don't have the negative effect when blended. I have a smoothie every other day or so when I know I'm going to be active shortly after I drink it and they contain bananas, blueberries (which also blunt blood sugar/insulin spikes), blackberries, sometimes a couple of dates, and a bunch of greens. I've checked my blood sugar using a relatives monitor/tester and even just an hour and a half after drinking a large smoothie my blood sugar is really good. Also, my triglycerides/blood tests are perfect so I don't think the smoothies I drink are bad in any way.

    "The Postprandial Effect of Components of the Mediterranean Diet on Endothelial Function" actually goes on to state that type of fat, ie. saturated / omega-9 were likely responsible for the decrease in FMD, as canola oil and salmon which are high in Omega-3 had no statistical effect. This doesn't exactly support your "whole food > processed food" argument. The study protocol was to examine an effect of a high fat meal, containing either fish fat, olive oil fat, or canola oil fat on FMD. Previous study suggest that all three fat sources were cardio-protective, despite the decrease in FMD with olive oil.
    It's important to recognise this distinction when drawing conclusions on a real world diet, as the study purposely omits volume, fibre, fruits, vegetables etc. In reality, a proper meal, or even a meal recommended by the USDA or Health Canada suggest serving sizes of combined foods, which, whether processed or not, will have additive effects (ie. canola oil in a salad with bread, juice etc., will have a different effect than vegetables, canola oil, bread, or juice alone.)

    Hey Mic the Vegan! Thank you so much for all of your videos :D I have learned so much from tuning in. You said it was okay to ask questions so here's one for you if you don't mind. I have been vegan for about ten years now, and I usually air on the side of caution when it comes to processed foods. Recently, I have been learning more about the oil in my diet, and I have decided to cut out the coconut oil/sesame oil/olive oil. As of now there is one thing in my pantry that I look at with a side glance and that is coconut milk (canned, organic, from whole foods, usually use it to make some kind of curry or Thai style sauce). I think I've gotten way too comfortable using this stuff. Now that I’m thinking more about oils, I am also thinking about this coconut milk (which is pretty much just coconut fat) I am wondering if its effect on blood, cholesterol, and arteries is similar to its close relative coconut oil? Thanks again!

    Adding on to what you said about the smoothies: When you eat a piece of fruit (a banana, a bowl of fruit salad, etc.), it takes time. You take a bite...you take another bite. Your body has a bit of time to start processing it. Whenever you drink the fruit, first of all, you are probably consuming more than you would than if you were eating. Secondly, a lot of sugar is coming in quickly. Every bit of sugar that you consume that the body can't immediately use/process goes straight to the liver. There is a huge increase in fatty liver disease, including kids and skinny people.

    I find protein powder useful for boosting the nutritional profile of grain-based dishes, like porridge, without really changing the texture or flavor significantly. Plant milks will also work, but most aren't all that neutral in terms of flavor (oat and hemp being exceptions), or don't have complementary proteins (oat and rice, for instance).
    A plant-milk company really needs to do for dairy what Beyond Meat did for meat.
