      That makes me depressed. Ive had acne since I hit puberty at 11, I was never bothered by it until people started telling me how bad and distracting it is. Ive been vegan for a year and still suffer from acne. I also try to drink a lot of water. Im pretty sure mine is mostly caused by genetics and hormones.

    I first stopped eating meat, diary and eggs because I thought it would clear my moderate-severe acne. It didn't but that doesn't matter, I'm vegan for the animals now:)
    Update as this has been gaining some replies in 2020: I have been vegan for 5 years now and my skin has improved significantly!

      some guy named DavorBa said something about deodorant, I don't know if this would apply to you but here it goes: ''Let me share my experience with acne. I had them for 10 years and in that time I tried every tip I could find online. Didn't try veganism, but nevermind. The cause of my acne is one thing every member of modern civilization can't leave house without: deodorant.
      I noticed that when I got sick/ill and I wouldn't leave house for days, my skin would clear up, i.e. stop creating new acne and the old ones would dry away. Because I didn't use deodorant when I wasn't going anywhere, in time I figured it out and tried deodorant alternatives.
      I replaced mainstream deodorant spray with an alternative (DIY deo-paste made from coconut oil, baking soda and starch) and results were clear as night. My pimple outbreaks stopped completely.
      In meantime, a local health food shop started selling "natural" deodorants, i.e. no aluminum salts and most of the other ingredients found in mainstream ones and I started buying those, as they had the same price as the mainstream ones I used before.
      One thing to note: my DIY deodorant-paste (you can google it, there are many sites explaining how to make it) was THE BEST when it came to keeping away any smells and most of the moisture.
      The health shop deodorants I currently use are not very long lasting and strong like the DIY paste, but when warmer days come, I intend to jump back onto coconut oil goodness :)
      One more thing: SOME perfumes also cause my skin to break out slightly. It's clear as day and night: I don't use them every day, but when I do, like clockwork, a pimple breaks out the next morning.''
      Hope it helps, I think I might try it myslef (especially if the DIY works better than the storebought)

      Eating all of this, still having acne. I think it's probably the stress which is causing my acne. Or refined sugar. How about chocolate?

    • @iqramohamud7320
      @iqramohamud7320 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honey Badger chocolate is known to cause acne because it has added sugar which cause your insulin level to go up which causes your hormones to go out of wack, so it must be that. Don't forget a defiency of vitamin d (from the sun)and or omega three (from fish) can cause acne because of the low levels.

    • @honeybadger1522
      @honeybadger1522 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iqra Mohamud I think it's the vitamin D deficiency then, since my chocolate habits don't seem to influence my acne. I am tracking my foods, and indeed vitamin D is low. The only low nutrient though 😃.

    When you've been vegan for 6 years, ate no oil, sugar, processed foods, only ate whole plant unrefined food in moderation, have the perfect weight and body composition - but your face is full of cysts and angry looking acne.. it makes you kind off lose hope. I've tried it all and nothing helps sadly.

    • @mathildesyrup8091

      Veronika Lah Don't forget, stress, sleep, food allergies, sensitive genetics, sun damage, makeup, hormonal birthcontrol can all play a role in your skin appearance.

    • @veronikalah2718
      @veronikalah2718 8 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      I don't have much stress in my life.. anyway I've had acne since I was 10 years old and it never went away no matter if I slept too much or too little or just right, I almost never wear make up (2 times per month maybe), sun damage? Not possible as I live in a northern country and I never tan or sunbathe for too long. I usually go for 30min-1.5h of sun per day, so I keep it minimal, I never let my skin burn. Also I've stopped taking birth control 2 years ago and I had acne even before that so that doesn't even play a part.
      Allergies? Maybe.. but I've payed for so many food intolerance and allergy tests and usually the results made me even more confused because the foods I noticed break me out the most, were fine on tests but foods that give me the worst breakouts came back perfect etc.
      Look, I've checked into anything there is about acne, trust me. When you have acne you can't stop yourself from searching for anything under the sun that could help.

      Veronika Lah I personally do not have an acne problem so I don't know if you have tried this but since you watch foods very closely and do not believe it is hormonal have you tried a clairisonic? I am lazy cleaning my skin but noticed this helps with a good cleanser. possibility just cleaning out all pores very often can clear it up?

    • @drunkvegangal8089

      Maybe you could look into demodex mites. 1% Ivermectin cream (or some sulfur compounds) applied topically is quite effective if you have demodex overgrowth (many acne sufferers have up to 10x the amount of demodex mites than non-acne folks have on their faces). These little mites contribute to rosacea as well...

My acne defiantly decreased but it is still fairly prevalent. Maybe I'll double check the vitamins and try the green tea but I totally feel your pain

      Have you tried adding probiotics to your diet? I know a girl who tried it and saw an improvement. Generally speaking, the stronger they are (the more live cultures they have) the more they could help. It could take anything between 3-4 months to notice a difference but it's maybe worth a try.

      It's not junk food. Don't fall for the vegan meme either. Its bread. Kill the entire food group, no grains, no bread, no wheat, ect. It causes inflammation in people like us who can't handle it. Its worked for me (got scars galore from acne from my acne AGES 12-23) but thats it. If you wan't to take it to the next step, let certain meats rot so there bactera can inhabit you gut as a form of probiotic to help digest meat lol.

I was overweight (almost obese) and I had high-blood pressure. My doctor was worried for me because I was only 20 and showing early signs of heart issues. I went vegan. I lost 40 lbs, my blood pressure is almost always 102/62, and my doctor is shocked at how healthy I am. My family always comments to me about how healthy I look, and they always ask, “how did you do eeeet!?” I tell them literally the same thing, “If you eat a plant-based diet you can have the heath benefits that I have, and feel great!” Their response: “That’s not practical, I’ll starve, that’s extreme, no one can be vegan for a long period of time, PROOTEIN.” I’ve given up on them. I had to go on accutaine again several years after having my first child, but this time the depression hit me hard. Good thing I was well aware of the fact that severe depression could be a side affect of accutaine or I wouldn't have known what was going on. I stopped it early and my depression went away. It didn't work as well the second time, but I just couldn't stay on something that made me so depressed.

    This is basically the best acne/diet video I've ever watched, and I've watched A LOT of them! I hate acne with a burning passion! I've suffered from it since I was 13 years old. I went vegan for ethical reasons but unfortunately it did not greatly help my skin. I did remove all oil and extra sugars from my diet at one point but still didn't have a lot of improvement. I think I probably could have tried balancing my vitamin and ALA levels but I didn't know about that at the time. I ended up going back on Accutane (which worked like a charm w/o any side effects!). The only other thing that has helped me is, weirdly enough, going on testosterone shots. I started them because I'm transgender, not to help my skin obviously! You would think T would increase my sebum and acne but it seemed to reduce it and eliminated my monthly chin and jaw outbreaks due to PCOS. I still get zits but I will take this videos advice to heart and try to eliminate processed vegan food and maybe try green tea. :) Thank you for making this!

    • @MictheVegan
      @MictheVegan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow we are all so different. The fact that increased testosterone would be an acne nightmare for many people yet was your solution goes to show the variability of solutions for different bodies. I think sun and ALA is a great place to start. Best of luck.

    My brother had an appointment yesterday with the dermatologist we go to see. He told him that I've gone vegan, and that my acne has been clearing up since (it's becoming much better! :)) Anyways, the doctor said that diet does not affect acne, but said dairy can affect acne in a few people. Too bad I wasn't in the office to show him my before pics of my face vs now, there is a huge difference only 3.5 weeks in. Best decision of my life

      @Lapestebubbonica 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it was just horomonal you would have already fixed it with drugs to control the hormones.
      The truth is that IT MAY BE also hormonal but is a combination of things.
      People just get emotional and think there is no cause.
      There is always a cause. That's how we cured all the "uncurable" diseases of the past and recent years.
      That's how Elon musk and neural link will create brain chips in the next 5 years to cure BLIND AND DEAF people.
      That's how we will cure cancer (we either will or die before we figure it out. By seeing our progress in everything I would bet we would)
      The thing is that IT'S HARD. You have to apply the scientific method just like we used it to cure the pestes or cure the fiver.
      You need to track all your variables (what you touch, hours of sleep, everything you eat, water drinked, sun, exercise + what foods testing or antibiotics or anything) , get all the data you can from outside researches and then be consistent with those variables for at least 30 days. Then you listen to feedback, you get more data and create a better hypothesis that will create better results etc... until you cure your acne.
      That's how we figured out anything... how to cure all the millions of past "uncurable" diseases, how to create a computer and even how to turn up a fire. It's cause-effect but the hard thing is understanding and tracking all the causes and find the right combination for you.

I have been watching the backlog while enjoying a WFPB lunch or midnight snack these past few weeks. I just pledged the remainder of what's necessary to meet your computer goal on Patreon and look forward to more videos. I haven't watched every video yet, but if there's not one yet I would love a video about beer: what non-vegan ingredients are in beers, do they fit into a WFPB diet, and especially are there any scientific studies that show whether or not I am counteracting the health benefits I get from this diet by drinking beer or a certain amount of alcohol? Thanks for all you do!

    Grains (both gluten-containing and non-gluten) and sugar should be avoided if you struggle with acne. Gluten may make your gut more permeable, which allows proteins to get into
    your bloodstream that would otherwise have been excluded, sensitizing your immune system and promoting inflammation, which can lead to acne.
    When you eat starchy carbs, grains, and sugar/fructose, it causes a surge of
    insulin and insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1 in your body. This surge can lead to an excess of male hormones, which cause your pores to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Elevated IGF-1 also causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is also associated with acne.

      Um sorry but no, starchy vegetables do not cause a surge/spike of insulin. Simple sugars and simple carbs do. Complex carbohydrates such as starches are composed of many polysaccharides. Therefore, they take longer to break down which allows insulin to be released in a slow, steady rate.

    Thank you for this informative video, this was really helpful, I had no idea of the correlations between acne and fat / sun exposure!
    I love your channel, it's really refreshing to have someone that takes the time to break down/reads through scientific researches and shares the actual mechanisms of why some stuff actually works, instead of just throwing around a couple of tips, without any factual basis. I've been vegan for a year now, and actually I used to be in medical school, where they would incessantly bring down vegans and vegetarians and so on, saying that since you need B12, being vegan is unnatural, that it will make you dumb because of the erosion of your myelin sheathes, etc, etc... I find it really sad, that people who are supposed to educate us, promote cruel and deadly lifestyle, and discourage anyone who disagrees with them.
    Do you think that you could also do a video with the same subject but linking it with cortisol and the effects of stress? I think it's my major breakout trigger, my skin got much better since I've become vegan, but my anxiety just ruins it all...
    Keep up the good work! : )

    Dude you are so right about the ALA! I had horrible cystic acne for ten years and could find no relief. I tried literally everything. Nothing topical worked. I could scrub my skin raw and it still wouldn't matter. PMS acne was a nightmare. I would break out like crazy and just wanted to hide my face. It was so painful. I was on a vegetarian diet for a little while and that didn't do anything for me. I might try it again though, now that I'm in a better spot with money. Acne wasn't the main reason I started. Anyway, I picked up a bag of flaxseed at the grocery store, because on that diet I wanted to have some source of omega 3s. I bought them whole and ground them up in my blender. You get a lot more for what you're paying for by volume that way than just buying them already ground. I swear, after a week my horrible skin started to clear up! In two weeks I was totally clear. I had no idea why, but I suspected it was the flaxseed. I got confirmation of this, after my freezer broke down in the middle of summer and I had to throw out the bag of the stuff I ground after it spoiled. Sure enough, my skin started breaking out again. After my freezer was fixed I bought some more and my face started to clear up again after a week. People please, put the scrub brush down and stop putting so much faith in topical stuff. Nine times out of ten it is an internal problem. Thank you.

    It sucks being a vegan with acne. I use to let myself get down thinking I was a bad example for veganism because diet can reflect appearance. Really I think my hormones are just off the walls still at 21. It may be genetic too because my grandma and mom use to have it? Though I've noticed a difference in my skin, I feel as if it should have cleared up more for eating the best I ever have! Thanks for this video because it verified my suspicion of being low in vitamin e. I put vitamin e on my face everyday as a moisturizer since my skin is on the dry side. And also little things like mentioning the importance oft Omega 3 fats and not mentioning that most fish contain a butt load of Omega 3 fatty acids.

    Thank you so much!! I really appreciate the scientific approach in all of your videos. Before finding your channel I would watch youtubers like freelee who told amazing success stories but never provided legitimate explanations for their results and I was always lost watching them wondering if I could trust their methods, but watching videos from you let's me make sense of veganism's effect on the body, environment, etc. so thank you for using facts to support your arguments bc that can be hard to find on TH-cam.

      I eat plenty of raw fruits and veggies, one out of three meals a day is always raw and I almost never eat processed food. So those two can be crossed out.
      I guess it's the oil. I've been eating peanut butter pretty often lately (homemade though, no oil added, but I guess peanut itself has enough oil already).
      Thanks for the info, much apprecated!

      Nadrndani Travojed Yeah I watch out for those fatty foods as well..a handful of walnuts daily has been my go to...but it's so easy to compensate and eat more fats when I don't eat enough carbs, I admit the struggle is real ^^

      I've heard raw foods can actually be difficult for the gut to digest! Different things can trigger acne for different people, I'd say try eating more cooked meals

    Hi Mic, could you do a video on Candida. There are different beliefs on how to get candida overgrowth under control. Dr. Axe like most other doctors suggest a diet restricted from sugars, processed foods, grains, and even starchy vegetables. I recently came across Dr. Douglas Graham who insists on the contrary. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos!

    I started using B. peroxide, which got rid of all the small bumps, but did nothing for my cystic acne. It wasn't until I dropped dairy that it dissapeared! I do still get some once in a while, but it happens when I eat something greasy! I had been suffering cystic acne for 12 years and dropping dairy and fat did the job! The skin on my whole body is now suuuuper soft, I don't feel my getting icky oily anymore! No more need for those rice papers!

    I'm a fifteen year old girl and have been having acne for approximately 4 years now. I turned vegan 7 months ago and it has become better but when I'm on my period it always comes back a bit... which really sucks. I hope it goes away when I'm out of puberty.

    Correct me if i'm wrong, but for whoever's also struggling with this, some of the things mike didn't mention are:
    -irritation to the face from scratching the already existing zits or scrubbing with your towel
    -one of the sources of grease can also be your own dirty hands (can be just dirty with natural secretions)
    -and also that keeping hydrated is very important

    I wrote this comment at beginning of video, and you literally found science to back up all of the associations I've discovered in my 5-6 years of acne! Will confirm the green tea, light (I use sun), Vitamin A, Zinc, and no milk are of substantial impact! Shout outs to people with perfect diets and still suffering cystic acne. I understand yo.
    Anyways, I notice drinking mild does aggravate cystic acne for myself- it's awful when drinking a lot of milk, and other times I have not a single cystic zit on my body for weeks or months.
    Also, Vitamin A in the diet seems to help me- as in tons of dark greens, carrots, broccoli (vegans are already like, uhh check!) Getting sunlight, god forbid some tanning, also helps. Green tea, heavily used (~ 5 cups of Sencha or some matcha) helps me huge!! Done it for ~2 months straight now.

    I have a small break out in the same place every month...Hormonal acne is the worst! But I can't imagine how awful it would be if I didn't eat plant based with no oil. I can tell a huge difference in my skin if I go on vacation and only have oily options for a few days. It's insane.
    Thanks for another great video. Fantastic information! I'll pass it on :D

    My acne tends to fluctuate from almost absent to out of control regardless of my dietary discipline. 2 weeks ago it was great, now I have 3-4 cysts. I’ve stressed over it to the point where I’m just giving up on caring. I eat healthy for longevity and I’m surrendering to being enslaved to needing “perfect” skin. Truthfully it’s humbling and I just want to encourage anyone who battles with depression because of it to know that you’re beautiful, and your value has nothing to do with your flaws.❤️ PS (side note) I cut meat out 4 months ago & decided to go fully Vegan just a week ago🙌🏼

    I have dairy and refined sugar intolerance, so during my teens i had bad acne, along with other childhood problems such as sinus congestion, excessive sweating and glue ear. Dairy causes low grade inflammation in the body and skin.
