I first stopped eating meat, diary and eggs because I thought it would clear my moderate-severe acne. It didn't but that doesn't matter, I'm vegan for the animals now:)
Update as this has been gaining some replies in 2020: I have been vegan for 5 years now and my skin has improved significantly!

some guy named DavorBa said something about deodorant, I don't know if this would apply to you but here it goes: ''Let me share my experience with acne. I had them for 10 years and in that time I tried every tip I could find online. Didn't try veganism, but nevermind. The cause of my acne is one thing every member of modern civilization can't leave house without: deodorant.
I noticed that when I got sick/ill and I wouldn't leave house for days, my skin would clear up, i.e. stop creating new acne and the old ones would dry away. Because I didn't use deodorant when I wasn't going anywhere, in time I figured it out and tried deodorant alternatives.
I replaced mainstream deodorant spray with an alternative (DIY deo-paste made from coconut oil, baking soda and starch) and results were clear as night. My pimple outbreaks stopped completely.
In meantime, a local health food shop started selling "natural" deodorants, i.e. no aluminum salts and most of the other ingredients found in mainstream ones and I started buying those, as they had the same price as the mainstream ones I used before.
One thing to note: my DIY deodorant-paste (you can google it, there are many sites explaining how to make it) was THE BEST when it came to keeping away any smells and most of the moisture.
The health shop deodorants I currently use are not very long lasting and strong like the DIY paste, but when warmer days come, I intend to jump back onto coconut oil goodness :)
One more thing: SOME perfumes also cause my skin to break out slightly. It's clear as day and night: I don't use them every day, but when I do, like clockwork, a pimple breaks out the next morning.''
Hope it helps, I think I might try it myslef (especially if the DIY works better than the storebought)

When you've been vegan for 6 years, ate no oil, sugar, processed foods, only ate whole plant unrefined food in moderation, have the perfect weight and body composition - but your face is full of cysts and angry looking acne.. it makes you kind off lose hope. I've tried it all and nothing helps sadly.

Veronika Lah Don't forget, stress, sleep, food allergies, sensitive genetics, sun damage, makeup, hormonal birthcontrol can all play a role in your skin appearance.

    • @veronikalah2718
      @veronikalah2718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +66

I don't have much stress in my life.. anyway I've had acne since I was 10 years old and it never went away no matter if I slept too much or too little or just right, I almost never wear make up (2 times per month maybe), sun damage? Not possible as I live in a northern country and I never tan or sunbathe for too long. I usually go for 30min-1.5h of sun per day, so I keep it minimal, I never let my skin burn. Also I've stopped taking birth control 2 years ago and I had acne even before that so that doesn't even play a part.
Allergies? Maybe.. but I've payed for so many food intolerance and allergy tests and usually the results made me even more confused because the foods I noticed break me out the most, were fine on tests but foods that give me the worst breakouts came back perfect etc.
Look, I've checked into anything there is about acne, trust me. When you have acne you can't stop yourself from searching for anything under the sun that could help.

Maybe you could look into demodex mites. 1% Ivermectin cream (or some sulfur compounds) applied topically is quite effective if you have demodex overgrowth (many acne sufferers have up to 10x the amount of demodex mites than non-acne folks have on their faces). These little mites contribute to rosacea as well...

Have you tried adding probiotics to your diet? I know a girl who tried it and saw an improvement. Generally speaking, the stronger they are (the more live cultures they have) the more they could help. It could take anything between 3-4 months to notice a difference but it's maybe worth a try.

It's not junk food. Don't fall for the vegan meme either. Its bread. Kill the entire food group, no grains, no bread, no wheat, ect. It causes inflammation in people like us who can't handle it. Its worked for me (got scars galore from acne from my acne AGES 12-23) but thats it. If you wan't to take it to the next step, let certain meats rot so there bactera can inhabit you gut as a form of probiotic to help digest meat lol.

If it was just horomonal you would have already fixed it with drugs to control the hormones.
The truth is that IT MAY BE also hormonal but is a combination of things.
People just get emotional and think there is no cause.
There is always a cause. That's how we cured all the "uncurable" diseases of the past and recent years.
That's how Elon musk and neural link will create brain chips in the next 5 years to cure BLIND AND DEAF people.
That's how we will cure cancer (we either will or die before we figure it out. By seeing our progress in everything I would bet we would)
The thing is that IT'S HARD. You have to apply the scientific method just like we used it to cure the pestes or cure the fiver.
You need to track all your variables (what you touch, hours of sleep, everything you eat, water drinked, sun, exercise + what foods testing or antibiotics or anything) , get all the data you can from outside researches and then be consistent with those variables for at least 30 days. Then you listen to feedback, you get more data and create a better hypothesis that will create better results etc... until you cure your acne.
That's how we figured out anything... how to cure all the millions of past "uncurable" diseases, how to create a computer and even how to turn up a fire. It's cause-effect but the hard thing is understanding and tracking all the causes and find the right combination for you.

This is basically the best acne/diet video I've ever watched, and I've watched A LOT of them! I hate acne with a burning passion! I've suffered from it since I was 13 years old. I went vegan for ethical reasons but unfortunately it did not greatly help my skin. I did remove all oil and extra sugars from my diet at one point but still didn't have a lot of improvement. I think I probably could have tried balancing my vitamin and ALA levels but I didn't know about that at the time. I ended up going back on Accutane (which worked like a charm w/o any side effects!). The only other thing that has helped me is, weirdly enough, going on testosterone shots. I started them because I'm transgender, not to help my skin obviously! You would think T would increase my sebum and acne but it seemed to reduce it and eliminated my monthly chin and jaw outbreaks due to PCOS. I still get zits but I will take this videos advice to heart and try to eliminate processed vegan food and maybe try green tea. :) Thank you for making this!

    • @MictheVegan
      @MictheVegan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Wow we are all so different. The fact that increased testosterone would be an acne nightmare for many people yet was your solution goes to show the variability of solutions for different bodies. I think sun and ALA is a great place to start. Best of luck.

  • @ScififanP
    @ScififanP 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dude you are so right about the ALA! I had horrible cystic acne for ten years and could find no relief. I tried literally everything. Nothing topical worked. I could scrub my skin raw and it still wouldn't matter. PMS acne was a nightmare. I would break out like crazy and just wanted to hide my face. It was so painful. I was on a vegetarian diet for a little while and that didn't do anything for me. I might try it again though, now that I'm in a better spot with money. Acne wasn't the main reason I started. Anyway, I picked up a bag of flaxseed at the grocery store, because on that diet I wanted to have some source of omega 3s. I bought them whole and ground them up in my blender. You get a lot more for what you're paying for by volume that way than just buying them already ground. I swear, after a week my horrible skin started to clear up! In two weeks I was totally clear. I had no idea why, but I suspected it was the flaxseed. I got confirmation of this, after my freezer broke down in the middle of summer and I had to throw out the bag of the stuff I ground after it spoiled. Sure enough, my skin started breaking out again. After my freezer was fixed I bought some more and my face started to clear up again after a week. People please, put the scrub brush down and stop putting so much faith in topical stuff. Nine times out of ten it is an internal problem. Thank you.

Grains (both gluten-containing and non-gluten) and sugar should be avoided if you struggle with acne. Gluten may make your gut more permeable, which allows proteins to get into
your bloodstream that would otherwise have been excluded, sensitizing your immune system and promoting inflammation, which can lead to acne.
When you eat starchy carbs, grains, and sugar/fructose, it causes a surge of
insulin and insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1 in your body. This surge can lead to an excess of male hormones, which cause your pores to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Elevated IGF-1 also causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is also associated with acne.

    • @emilyg.8457

Um sorry but no, starchy vegetables do not cause a surge/spike of insulin. Simple sugars and simple carbs do. Complex carbohydrates such as starches are composed of many polysaccharides. Therefore, they take longer to break down which allows insulin to be released in a slow, steady rate.

External - I don't really wear make up and only spritz with rose water morning and night. Moisturiser is cbd oil, tea tree essential oil mixed in castor oil. 🌿 Wholefoods, high fruit diet and additional vit B12, D & evening primrose 🌿

The best acne video I've ever seen. Even better than nutritionfacts.org and that's my highest compliment!! I wish it had been around when I was a teen or when my son was a teen. Thanks so much! This was so comprehensive. Also, some may want to watch "Nina and Randa" videos on how they eliminated their acne (and it was pretty vulgar!) with low fat, whole food vegan.

Your videos are so incredibly helpful in dispelling all the nonsense myths about veganism, and especially helpful to motivate me in switching from vegetarian to whole food plant based (WFPB) vegan. I have been watching the backlog while enjoying a WFPB lunch or midnight snack these past few weeks. I just pledged the remainder of what's necessary to meet your computer goal on Patreon and look forward to more videos. I haven't watched every video yet, but if there's not one yet I would love a video about beer: what non-vegan ingredients are in beers, do they fit into a WFPB diet, and especially are there any scientific studies that show whether or not I am counteracting the health benefits I get from this diet by drinking beer or a certain amount of alcohol? Thanks for all you do!

Thank you for this informative video, this was really helpful, I had no idea of the correlations between acne and fat / sun exposure!
I love your channel, it's really refreshing to have someone that takes the time to break down/reads through scientific researches and shares the actual mechanisms of why some stuff actually works, instead of just throwing around a couple of tips, without any factual basis. I've been vegan for a year now, and actually I used to be in medical school, where they would incessantly bring down vegans and vegetarians and so on, saying that since you need B12, being vegan is unnatural, that it will make you dumb because of the erosion of your myelin sheathes, etc, etc... I find it really sad, that people who are supposed to educate us, promote cruel and deadly lifestyle, and discourage anyone who disagrees with them.
Do you think that you could also do a video with the same subject but linking it with cortisol and the effects of stress? I think it's my major breakout trigger, my skin got much better since I've become vegan, but my anxiety just ruins it all...
Keep up the good work! : )

Correct me if i'm wrong, but for whoever's also struggling with this, some of the things mike didn't mention are:
-irritation to the face from scratching the already existing zits or scrubbing with your towel
-one of the sources of grease can also be your own dirty hands (can be just dirty with natural secretions)
-and also that keeping hydrated is very important

I was a vegetarian and consumed very little milk a year before being vegan. I just want people here to understand that veganism might help with a zit here and a zit there but a lot of the time it's something bigger than your food and you shouldn't get discouraged if veganism isn't helping, you'll still have to see a DR.

The WGA Lectin found in wheat might possibly be the most toxic NATURAL
substance/food we digest on a daily basis and yet it may be more toxic
than the nicotine found in tobacco. With that said, GRAINS are not
alone. Nuts, legumes, lentils, and night shades have to be taken into
consideration when discussing toxic lectins. Most of us have heard the
advice given to teenagers to NOT eat chocolate if they have acne
problems. Most of us, that have had acne, have noticed that when we
avoid chocolate that our acne improves just to have our acne return for
no reason so we return to eating chocolate. Chances are very high that
you ate something more inflammatory than chocolate like PEANUTS or
    UNFERMENTED SOY!

I had moderate acne from a teenager to age 25. I started a whole unrefined strict plant based diet for a year and every couple of months my skin improved. It wasn't magical but was improving. I have it on my face, shoulders, chest and back.
At the moment, I still get clogged pores but there is a great improvement in skin compared to before.
Now this just might be a coincidence, as a part of getting older. Nevertheless, my diet is healthier compared to before which is a bonus in it's self.

I've been vegan for around a year now (trying to avoid vegan fast foods, bad sugars, fats and generally to live healthier) and avoiding meat my entire life anyway but my acne actually got worse after cutting dairy from my diet. I'm 8 years after my teenage period and have no other factor that'd influence badly on my skin condition (no diseases, hormones taken etc.). I've heard that the body might detoxicating itself after a long period of dairy consumption but I'm not sure it's my case. I've hoped, like you said, being vegan may have helped me with resolvig the acne problem but unfortunately it's not that obvious. Of course it's not the reason I changed my diet but.. anyway. I think the stress factor is also important to be taken under consideration.

I have quite bad BACNE and a very oily face with comedones and an oily scalp. 29 female - started in puberty like age 12. I'm vegan for many years, I drink 3 liters of water a day, I eat glutenfree, I'm not constipated (I go at leat once a day), I take vitamins, I eat a lot of vegetables with my meals (and make a green smoothe with a little avocado and spinach and kale every day), I don't cook with oils and try to eat low fat meals but eat a tablespoon of a variety of seeds with my breakfast every day for some healthy fats. I work out a 3-4 times a week, shower emidiately after and I dont let the schampoo and conditioner run down my back, and I don't ear makeup on my face (obviously not on my back lol). The ONLY thing I do that is not recomended is that I eat a very moderate amount vegan icecream, cookies, or chocolate like once a week because I just can't stand eating ridicously clean ALL the time. So I don't know, I feel like I eather have to sell my soul to MAYBE get clear skin (I mean it might still be there even if I don't eat ANYTHING awesome for like a year) or i just live with this shit....

Also, I definitely agree with avoiding fruit juices. Last year I tried following the advice from all those nazi vegans from the RT4 movement, and was on a juicing/smoothie frenzy. I have NEVER had such bad acne as I did then. I even had to go on doxycycline for 4 months to help clear it up...

    Hi! Just one direct experience.
Me and my sister grew up in the same family eating the same things, my mother cooking, omnivorous. We were 30 years ago in eastern Europe not used to eat any junk sweet bar on a regular bases like in younger generations, for example chocolate was an exceptional occasion not an every day thing. Between me and my sister we had a few nutritional differences, even more during the teen age years, I loved to drink milk I was drinking it a lot, was natural to me, warm with honey or cold right from the fridge, on the other side my sister did not like milk did not really drink it. Another thing i did not like cake (I would not eat even half of my birthday home made cake) and did not like at all chewing gum, my sister in her childhood loved them.
Me I did not had any problems with acne in the teenage years, none. On the other hand my sister was at that time just full of them, really. So milk in our case was not the issue at all.
I think, based on any study, that maybe scientists should try to confirm if the increase in pesticides and artificial colors and similar in almost all of the food in our days are in some ways related to acne.

Acne is caused by sooo many things, I am no doctor and this is just my opinion on what I have heard and experienced for myself is that the causes could MAYBE be: showering in hard water, eating high lectin plants like gluten and highly processed soy, eating too many flax seeds, environmental hormones, and not taking pre/probiotics. If you eat no oil, no sugar no processed food..than maybe you are just sensitive to night shade foods. Also, some people don’t get enough omegas like DHA EPA and certain amino acids like taurine. But everyone is SO VERY different.. Going to a naturopath doctor who knows his/her natural herbs/supplements will save you. I am still learning new things about the body, it’s all about experimenting and doing your best. I do hope my acne clears up soon, I have been cutting out gluten, using less face products and using progesterone cream for all of the environmental estrogens we are exposed to on the daily.

I'm 19 and I've had acne since I was 13. It's not that bad now but I wish it would just go away already. I'm almost in my 20's for Christ sake. I've found that drinking plenty of water and tea usually helps along with washing your face everyday but none of it is 100% gone.

Sea grass and sea weed or Noori sheets should contain zink, iodine (a lot) and selenium, and omega 3 acids I believe.

hell no to people who dare to say acne has nothing to do with diet.. literally I had the worst acne ever. 2 weeks into my whole foods plant based no sugar no fat no processed food vegan life and ALL my acne was gone! And whenever I eat unhealthy for a few days some big pimples come back (like nowadays because of school stress I eat a lot of sugary granola bars and energy drinks and I got two big monster on my face)

so I'm on plant low carb diet (no sugar for 2 years , no carbs from fruit or wheat or rice or potato), and from start of this year I went of cheese that I was still consuming... To be honest I still get acne and nothing has changed.

This video came at a perfect time. I just found a pic of my acne before I went vegan and it's crazy how less acne I have 7 months vegan.

Your non-preachy way of teaching (focused on scientific research) has reached me. I don't think I'll ever stop eating meat 100%, but I will try two or three days a week of 100% vegan (the rest of the week meat in moderation so as to not compensate) for a few months; let's see how it goes. Cheers!

I wish I had known all of this when I hit puberty, maybe I wouldn't have had to go through all those medications and side effects to try to clear up my face and back. I also wouldn't have scars from acne that cover my shoulders and back :/ Going vegan a year ago (at 20 years old) cured most of my acne problems and, like mentioned in the video, lessening oil and removing most of the processed food that remained once I went vegan cleared up much of the rest.
Thank you for the video, Mic. Very informative and well researched, as always.

I went vegan, and my acne calmmed down a lot. Now i only have persistent acne in my tempers. But when i eat soy yougurt, i start to break out with little hormone pimples in my chin/low part of my face. Just wanted to share, something that could trigger some peoples acne.

lmao this is .a wierd situation for bodybuilding AND health enthusiasts, for many of theses studies would be super intereseting to bodybuilders which seek to grow muscle faster. Muscle tech, supplement company, has released super bioavailable versions of amino acid leucine to increase mTor activation to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, plus its also recommended to intake higher leucine containing foods. Also, higher IGF-1 levels translate to an anabolic environment for the muscle to grow (even though the growth fact also increases cancer risk).

this is the only one of your videos I feel is missing something so far, how about gluten intolerance? when I first went vegan, my acne got painfully bad... I even stopped being vegan for a while and it took me a year, two weeks of antibiotics, hours of research online and a book to finally figure out I might be gluten intolerant... I stopped eating it and went vegan again and my skin was completely clear 3 weeks later

My skin cleared right up when I went vegan! When I was a teen I had horrible acne I used Proactive which dried out my skin and it burned so badly, it worked for a while but it was awful. Then I went on birth control to get rid of my acne which also worked but I decided I didn't want to take hormones anymore and my acne came right back. Then two years ago I went vegan and no more acne =]

I hate that I still have severe acne, even after being vegan for 3 years, eating a whole plant food diet with very small amounts of processed foods. I do everything that is recommended and nothing works.
