    Peter, I love your content, I love your B-roll and everyhing
    But you're right, that's not why I watch your videos
    As you said, I do it because of you, because of your personality
    And I do it because every time I watch your videos I just feel the urge to pick up the camera and go shoot some stuff!!
    Thank you for that

      I couldn't have said this any better. After working at a corporate, soul killing job for over 30 years, I am ready to finally do my own thing. I enjoy watching Peter as I am trying to reconnect to my own voice. I love Peter's energy and insight. Please don't take it to heart if the critics say negative things about you, Peter. People at the top of their game are easy targets. Many people are just not capable of producing new and exciting content and it makes them feel better by tearing other people down. We appreciate and respect what you do. Thanks

    On the topic of "worse" videos doing "better", I think there's a healthy balance for sure. For example, for most channels out there, yes, in many cases, there is definitely a draw to beautiful footage. I think we we can all agree that excellent color grading, perfect transitions, amazing scenery, and a whole lot of hefty equipment is appreciated in many cases. *BUT* I also think that a channel won't do "well" if the _only_ content being produced is stylized videos, because it's simply not relatable. I think in many cases, people are drawn in for the beautiful footage, but stay for the personalities, or because they can learn something. You have a perfect storm on this channel Peter, because not only do you have absolutely stunning footage, but you have a super likable personality, AND you tech us how to be better filmmakers too. There's something to admire, something to learn, AND someone who makes us feel welcome as a part of this channel. That's massive. I think for many channels (mine included), one or two of those boxes might be ticked, but not necessarily all three.

      The hardest thing about starting out is finding a voice: "what do I want to say and offer?" and "how do I want to do it?" are harder questions than anything around how to shoot or edit

    • @weeri
      @weeri 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wax Wings Photo yes, I agree. Guys like Peter and Casey have built up a reputation and skills to be able to call themselves authorities on what they are doing. And for the rest of us, who are just starting making videos, it can be hard to know what your voice is and what you want to tell. Or, at least that is what I struggle with. Why the hell would someone listen to me?

    I think the best vlogs are those where the creator is able to engage and include the viewer in the conversation, even if they aren't there during the time of recording! I still have a long way to go and big thanks to the both of you for being an inspiration to all of us on this platform!

  • @lifelikejosie
    @lifelikejosie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This is probably the most relatable thing I've ever listened to. Felt like I was part of the conversation. HAHA isn't it crazy how much we freak out about what we create when we should just GO. And the part about people being interested in the PERSON and not the shots = so eye opening.

    • @weeri
      @weeri 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lifelikejosie yesss, this is so true. I always have in my mind that I need to create something exactly as I have in my mind, because otherwise people will have all sorts of opinions about it. Turns out that I can’t ever tell what the audience will think of it. So yeah, it’s just better to DO!

  • @NickPage
    @NickPage 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man I wish I could express just how much I needed to hear this! This was so on point for how I’ve been feeling. I feel like I swim in a constant sea of “nick page” and I just get so tired of my own voice I was actually contemplating making my next videos with none of my own dialogue. But you are absolutely right on all points in this video thank you so much man

  • @jayofthesun2997
    @jayofthesun2997 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Being a film student in their last year of college, this video was super refreshing to watch. I've been so boxed in for the last 3 years being told there's very specific ways to achieve your intentions. But when Chris and yourself got towards the end of the video and say things like, "having a balance between the shotlist and improve" really resonates with me. At the end of the day we're all creating art, and an essential piece of that creation is merely how it feels, not how it was done. I also think as creators we all naturally doubt ourselves but the doubt is what pushes us to make better content. Don't be too hard on yourself but understand that absolute certainty is the death of creativity.
    Thanks Peter!

    Thanks to both of you for this very unique video! It always helps me to watch your tutorials, behind the scenes and other videos, but this one was very special to me. I could feel the raw and warm energy coming from you, the time and love you put just talking together and trying to share your knowledge to everyone out there, it's very special. Thank you again for helping me out, I just recently quit hospitality (which I've been doing for a very long time) to start a film course and pursue my dreams in a more artistic career. Mann.. This video helps SOOO much!! This is me EVERY day!! And the thing you guys spoke on about it being fun in the beginning but then it starts to get stressful! ME! It's so good to just KNOW that you're not alone in these battles with the creative process! Just to know other people struggle with the same things is like a huge exhale of relief and kind of allows me to stop.. and reset.. which is so important to do every so often. We have to be able to reach deep down and find that energy and general excitement that we had when we first started and remember that's what's important. I just started my channel but I have HUGE aspirations for what I want it to be so I put SOO much pressure on myself and sometimes I feel it paralyzing me! But this helps a lot! Thanks a lot, Peter and Chris! This is awesome! 😃

    I spend about 40 hours a week on youtube. Shooting a 3 camera cooking show, 3 times a week and then editing for 6-8 hours a video. I don't get many views hahah but the few videos that have done will have been me setting up a phone and doing the hot pepper challenge or a quick 2 camera Szechuan sauce video... so I can contest that hours in don't equate to hours out. But its still worth shooting and editing what you want versus chasing views .

    I think your quest for perfection is the symptom of a filmmaker. You have great talent and you have a growing platform...and you have to touch the world and you know it. That makes it hard for you to sleep I suppose! I relate to your words. What a great video. Editing the footage together here....fantastic.

    I resonate with so much here... the perfectionism, the pressure, the challenge to make something more raw and less polished, the languishing of ideas, the expectations we put on ourselves as creators. Thanks for opening up and starting this conversation. I love all of your gorgeous videos, but this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to comment so I think you are on to something here. Keep being awesome.

    I'm SO GLAD you did this video! The content was so valuable and relatable and inspiring! It looked great but what really stood out for me was feeling like we were sitting down as creative "friends" talking about about the ups and downs of being creative. It was really great! Please do more videos like this! I'm an actress and I love the concept of saying "yes and" for the creative process of acting but I never thought about applying this to my edits. I'm so excited to jump back into creating videos. I also have a billion ideas on my phone and excel spreadsheets and post it notes and notebooks....it's pretty crazy. So this video was really inspiring.

    it seems the projects I put most preparation into, when I finally go to talk to the camera, my energy is just not good because I've thought about what I am going to say, where as if I have an idea sporadically and go to film my energy is pure and true and I enter the flow state and the audience can tell and I always have more likes on those vids
