    Great tutorial, curious if you could do one that gets more in depth into sending along source media with the XML from Premiere which would be a likely scenario when sending your project to a colourist. Your video is really helpful for someone working between Premiere and Resolve on the same machine but that isn't always the case for an editor to colourist workflow. Once again, great video!

    This helped me out so much! I was really struggling to get the graded files back to Premiere, even though its so simple! Thanks!
    I have a question though: If I start the project in Premiere, apply effects there and then move it to Resolve, is there a way to preserve the applied effects throughtout the whole process? For example, I applied warp stabilizer in premiere, then brought it to Davinci where it was no longer applied (I assume since its not the same effect there) and when bringing it back to Premiere the effect is still no longer applied.
    While this makes sense, is there maybe a way to preserve these effects? A workaround I have would be to replace all the footage of the project with the exported graded footage, but I'm not sure if this might cause some other issues. Or I guess I would just need to organize my workflow around color grading first.
    Thanks anyways! :)

    • @dannymatthewsedit
      @dannymatthewsedit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah so what I do is color and then add effects. You wont be able to transfer effects via xml but you could just export it as apple pro res and put it in resolve and finish it there.

  • @TimButt2
    @TimButt2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    At 41 seconds you say you don't know why they (Adobe) named it Final Cut Pro XML. There's a reason it's called Final Cut Pro XML... Apple designed the XML process for Final Cut Pro. It was used mostly when going from Apple's Final Cut Pro to Apple Color back in the day, but people quickly started using it for going to DaVinci Resolve since it was a better color grading program back then. Adobe simply adopted it to Premiere because they couldn't come up with a better protocol. They also did it so that people leaving Final Cut Pro 7 after the Final Cut Pro X debacle of 2011 could bring their FCP projects into Adobe Premiere Pro.
    And, at this point Adobe is using an XML Process that is over a decade old. It's very outdated, but Adobe doesn't have interest in making something better because they'd rather you stay in Premiere and use the inferior Lumetri. They used to have Speedgrade, but that program was awful and there were also issues sending Premiere Pro timelines to Speedgrade. Throughout the 2012-2017 period I edited in Premiere I used DaVinci Resolve instead for my color grading work. This is in large part why I stopped editing in Premiere back in 2017 and fully embraced editing in DaVinci Resolve. I didn't have to waste time with round-tripping with XML in order to color grade my projects. I've been color grading in Resolve since 2010, when I was still using Final Cut Pro 7.
    Now since DaVinci Resolve has become a far better editing platform. So I usually advise a lot of people to leave Adobe Premiere Pro and switch to Resolve. So many who make the switch are very happy. I cut out so many unnecessary steps by dropping PPro. I can edit and grade at the same time in Resolve. It's wonderful. So put Premiere where it belongs: the trash.

    Thanks for the tutorial. But I've got some problems.
    When you open a timeline in Premiere Pro that has been graded in DaVinci Resolve, does the grading appear exactly the same? In my case, the colors I see in Premiere Pro are different from what I did in DaVinci Resolve. I put a lot of effort into grading, but seeing different colors is disappointing. I think that is because of some color space thing. Have you experienced this?

    Great video. Quick one, does this workflow suit proxies made in Prem? So when it's time to export in Prem (or Resolve) will proxies be converted back to original specs / data?

    • @dannymatthewsedit
      @dannymatthewsedit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So no the proxy is actually exported with it. In this process, what you'll have to do is unlink the proxies from the clips but once the new clips come into the timeline they are apple pro res so your computer should be fine running them as if they are proxies.

    Can you tell if this still works with effects applied in premiere like warp stabilizer or transitions?

    • @TimButt2
      @TimButt2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you need to remove effects like warp stabilization before going to Resolve. But Resolve has a world class stabilizer in it. Consider I edit natively in Resolve now as well as doing all my grading in Resolve I use this stabilizer all the time. In fact I was using it over Premiere’s even when I was still using Premiere for editing.
      As for transitions. It varies. Some don’t translate while others do. It’s advisable that you confirm with a reference export of your full movie and then use the reference video in Resolve to check against your imported timeline. If it didn’t translate then delete the transitions and export media with frame handles.
      Alternatively you could just toss Premiere in the trash where it belongs and do your entire edit in Resolve now. There’s a reason so many are making the switch.

    • @dannymatthewsedit
      @dannymatthewsedit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest putting effects on afterwards instead of before hand since it still messes some effects up going back and forth

    Hi, i seem to have a problem here. When I'm exporting back to .XML file from davinci resolve, it exports the entire clip individually together with the .XML file and the file size of the clips are abnormally HUGE, is this normal? For example, my original clip is only 320MB, it became 5GB after exporting from davinci resolve. It would be great if you could help me out with this, thanks!

    • @dannymatthewsedit
      @dannymatthewsedit  ปีที่แล้ว

      So yes it’ll be normal to have a larger file size.
      what you can do is if you’re trying to lower size on your project file you can delete the clip it replaces to save some space but don’t delete the clip you just imported because that has the grade.
      You can also try changing the
      automatic quality when exporting the xml file not the resolution but “quality” section. It’s not ideal but it’ll help with the file sizes.

      Same here... all clips are missing due to timecode issues. I don't know if its a Sony issue or such.

      You need to link the footage in Resolve. Highlight all of the clips, right click, 'Relink selected media.' In the popup, you can just select the top level folder and Resolve will crawl through all of the folders to find it. If it missed any, say yes to the comprehensive search. It's a little slower but not bad.

    not working anymore :(( I am doing the same thing just like a month ago but now once I open the timeline on davinci. davinci crashes..... is it my fault or is it that Adobe is not liking their xml to work on davinci anymore ?

    I’m curious, can I just export my final copy from Resolve? I used premier to edit a film but it’s a really old computer and slowwww. Was hoping to just export a Final Cut from Resolve

    • @dannymatthewsedit
      @dannymatthewsedit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you totally can. The only issue is any effects or anything like that will be removed transfer over to resolve so if you don't have anything like that you can just export from resolve to mp4, mov, etc

    • @HikingWithCooper
      @HikingWithCooper 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. An xml is basically just a spreadsheet that tells the NLE where to place each clip and where to cut it. The actual source footage is relinked to the xml so it is whatever quality your source footage on your HD is.

    The editing in Davinci is so bad, this is worth giving a try! The only good thing about Davinci is the color section haha

      Means the footage location is not where resolve thinks it was gonna be. So go ahead and re link it or make sure its in the same folder and hard drive as everything else and re do the conversion

    There is no need to export back to Premiere, is there? Resolve can do everything and anything Premiere can do, only better.

    • @dannymatthewsedit

      Entirely up to you. You could finish out the project in resolve or just start it in resolve in the first place and not use premiere

    ok now show us how you fix it when davinci totally misaligns the timeline you brought in lol. if you set up your timeline in premiere and have ANY mixed frame rates for slow mo, or speed ramp anything, don't do it before going into davinci. i've tried a hundred workarounds to get this done, and every single mf time we reimport back to premiere, it throws random things off a frame or two here and there and then it takes more time seeking out all the translation errors and fixing those little things than had i just graded in premiere. as someone who's done color for major brands, this is ANNOYING AF.
    what we did at ralph luaren was just color grade in after effects for better consistent results and less headaches. but i need davinci now.

      What if you export it as prores and color grade it there

    • @BVLLSHVRK
      @BVLLSHVRK 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      what i've found to work the best is whatever i'm doing in premiere, before going to davinci with my xml, everythign has to be converted to match the frame rate. so if i have a 60fps clip that i slowed down correctly (modify>interpret footage>etc) it will most definitely throw that off. so it's better to export that shot in the frame rate i want it to match to, then replace it, if that makes sense. i keep a folder sep for the davinci grade, and edit that new timeline in premiere that way if i have to make any color changes, i can just go back into davinci and overwrite the new file davinci made with the updated one on export and allow it to update my premiere timeline. @@krayzeegaming
