The Ziggy version is a glittering diamond, set in a dazzling gold necklace, this version is that same diamond, lying on a table. Stripped of glam. Still gorgeous.
I keep interpreting this song in terms of how a Lady Stardust, or a Marc Bolan, would be rejected by society, especially in 1972. And so on this demo when he sings that he lied it shows that he admires Lady Stardust but feels pressured not to show it. The choice to change it to "sighed" in the album version made the meaning more ambiguous and palatable. But I'm far from an expert on the intentions or circumstances surriunding this song
I believe it is Ronno playing piano on the album track. Obviously David plays on this 'demo' version. It's amazing to think that only a few chords and some words make such a masterpiece. Simple and brilliant. For Marc Bolan too... God Bless him.
Think about this and it will blow your mind: Not one artist in the whole world . . . . . not one . . . has written as many good songs as David Bowie. He must have 70 songs that are this good.
I just love this song, I don't care what version, I've got the intro on piano (pretty easy) I'm gonna get the whole song eventually. The whole LP is classic.
"..and I smile sadly for a love I could not obey..." so true to me right now, I still loving her. what can i do? just cry and sing this song of darkness and disgrace. (sure she wont ever find this comment)
I think he was just testing out different vocal styles. This is not his best vocal trial - glad he changed it by the last cut. Great to see how he envisioned the song structure as that is the coolest thing about this. Fantastic to hear an early trail of this classic!
@jhiken Look for Ryko CDs. They all have bonus tracks - demos and alternate versions - and they're dynamite. Even though I have many Bowie albums on vinyl dating back to the 60s, I bought all the Ryko CDs and haven't regretted a single purchase.
Certainly different from the album, a bit more "space" sounding, and I'm glad to be able to hear this, I like hearing how songs are developed "behind the scenes". but the album version, I think, works better with the flow of the album, because it sounds more "Burlesque" than "Alien"..as though Ziggy is communicating through a simple drag performer..
The demo is better than the track. It has more Heart. It's more sentimental. Just a Piano and Vocals. It captures the depth of the plight of the character in the song and what he had to endure as a result of his Artistry.
What's up with the Bowie vocals concerns? Maybe he doesn't sound as good as the original song but absolutely EVERY artist is going to sound a bit different if they make a acoustic version of a song And this is a demo as well
the fact of the matter is that he sounds great in here. the mixing and mastering could be better, but its a demo. i do sing and i'll tell you that it's so hard to sing how he does here and you saying it's sub-par only shows you have absolutely no repsect for the creative process.
anonyms: 1) obviously, you don't know what you're talking about or all that much about the making of music, try singing like that yourself 2) this stripped down version kicks mad ass, thanks
Rest assured, there are plenty of live performances showing him to be just fine without "studio help"; and besides having a crisp sound and good seperation courtesy of the studio and some sound effects on some tracks for artistry's sake I really don't think he actually has his voice touched up in the studio.
@expatbritingermany i dont believe that because i myself have many band crushes and love alot of stuff they do but then some of it i hate.. and will not give credit where its not due.. so.. maybe youre talking about some people and not all.. because if im this way then there has got to be atleast.. a couple thousand in the world who are the same.. because we as people are just not as individual and different then others as we would like to think. peace
The Ziggy version is a glittering diamond, set in a dazzling gold necklace, this version is that same diamond, lying on a table. Stripped of glam. Still gorgeous.
He sings "Ohh how I lied, when they asked if I knew his name" instead of "sighed", interesting.
Seems like a reference to St Peter denying knowledge of Christ 3 times.
like in the life of mars demo. He singed something else on some parts
Bowie also liked changing some of the lyrics when singing live.
wtf I was listening for 2 minutes and I saw your comment exactly on that moment

I absolutely love the demo version, I think it's better than the studio version, honestly.
It's MUCH better than the "finished" version.
I like that the singing / lyrics is clearer here
The album version deserves to be the album for a billion reasons though
1972
I believe it is Ronno playing piano on the album track.

For Marc Bolan too... God Bless him.
I think it was Rick Wakeman on the LP version.
@@Johnniehaha previously... but Ronno handled the job expertly as Wakeman had join Yes by them
I actually like this version more than the studio version. The simplicity of it makes it much more emotional.
totally agree. same with ziggy stardust acoustic version!!
+Camilo Bogado
Yes, there is more emotion in this version.
Often the case with him. I love it when he sounds as if he is singing right in your living room, haha.
Yes agree 😊
I quite like the unpolished sound. He has such a phenomenal voice he can manage it easily.
デモ版はデヴィッド・ボウイが歌って、スタジオ版はジギー・スターダストが歌ってるんだ。どちらも最高!
Think about this and it will blow your mind: Not one artist in the whole world . . . . . not one . . . has written as many good songs as David Bowie. He must have 70 songs that are this good.
Marc will live forever
I just love this song, I don't care what version, I've got the intro on piano (pretty easy) I'm gonna get the whole song eventually. The whole LP is classic.
RIP, your song goes on forever.

j aime beaucoup cette version..David me manque tellement
So much more emotional than the studio
What a GEM! Thank you!
Is it just me or is Lady Stardust by far the finest tune of an exceptional record that is Ziggy Stardust?
*sobbing* I’m fine
demos are so much more pure then final versions, i love this one so much =D
this song was about marc bolan for people who didnt know that
A trully Artist, creat for yourselfe like we do. US for us. This is pure art. Forever.
Stripped back ,sublime! The song goes on forever!

Superb 👍
The beggining of a masterwork
Amazing version
Such a beautiful voice! Yes this is the one so beautiful! Thank you for posting.
I like this version, still prefer the 70's version, but this version is lovely.
raw and beautiful. RIP Bowie
glorious and elegant
beautiful version of beautiful song
Beautiful! RIP Ziggy.
Great Version , MAGICAL...
I ripped it from the Ziggy Stardust cd with bonus tracks,b-sides, and demos like this
And thank you for that!! ☺️☺️
i LOVE the piano to this song 💗💗💗💗
I think he was just testing out different vocal styles. This is not his best vocal trial - glad he changed it by the last cut. Great to see how he envisioned the song structure as that is the coolest thing about this. Fantastic to hear an early trail of this classic!

I far prefer this version of the song. This demo and Five Years are my two favorite Bowie songs. He's just terrific.
thanks for this post--love this song!
love it
If he had done this on Radio One's Live Lounge, they would have been in raptures. Brilliant.
Nice and inspiring always to hear the works in progress..cheers for the upload, Xen Smithy.
So beautiful ❤️
juste magnifique!!!!!
I can't even....
We know what you mean...

Genius!!!! :) about Marc bolan I believe :)
Oh, thats overwhelming!
Wow best version in some ways thanks bowie i need ed that
so good I dont deserve to hear it
@JTerrible63 Good heavens. You should have been a Butlins Bluecoat mate! The kids would have loved all that.
I like this arrangement more than the Ziggy Stardust.
The demo is better than the track. It has more Heart. It's more sentimental. Just a Piano and Vocals. It captures the depth of the plight of the character in the song and what he had to endure as a result of his Artistry.
Bowie Kills here !
That was some speech my friend
Gotta be David on piano, too..
❤
David Bowie Lady Stardust 1972
✨
I think this was a bonus track on a Ryko produced CD I had back in the day.
@jhiken on the same album, ziggy stardust also has a demo! it's great.
R.I.P.
So cool!!! Huge fan and I never heard these demos. Are there more??
youtube for some reason isn't allowing this video to load right now.
that pisses me off.
@tarkstar99 No, it really is him. It was on one of his albums.
and he sang all night...
Bowie is like caviar ...
What's up with the Bowie vocals concerns?
Maybe he doesn't sound as good as the original song but absolutely EVERY artist is going to sound a bit different if they make a acoustic version of a song
And this is a demo as well
They were asking why is his vocals double-tracked because apparently they've never heard a demo with double-tracked vocals.
@@evanmiles-wright1188 this demo reminds me to the piano demo with double tracked vocals by Brian Wilson of Surf's Up
1972
Magia Glam ⚛️🎶💗
What's wrong with the vocal? Sounds great like usual to me.
ARRIBA BOWIE :)🤠

LONG LIVE THE THIN WHITE DUKE!!!
wrong era, but the sentiment is nice
+MrMonkeyCommander I love condescending people, so much.
+Ric Ancira I wasn't being condescending. sorry if it came across that way.
MrMonkeyCommander I wasn't being sarcastic...I have low self esteem.
Ric Ancira thats too bad, because I wasnt being condescending.
(this was the Ziggy era btw, thin white duke era was a few albums later)
Ziggy Stardust would approve this cover... oh wait
名曲。ご冥福をお祈りします。

Can anyone direct me to the chords of this song? I don't mean the Lady Stardust on the Ziggy Album. I mean THIS one! Original demo. Thanks.
those are the same chords, it´s just a very different arrangement
I have actually since figured out the chords. This version is in the key of Eb minor.
you're right, but anyway, you can play the song in any key you want, i think the important thing here is the arrangement
its a 1/2 step lower here
: )

i too am a massive fan of bowie but this aint too good.
you must have an amazing voice if you think these vocals suck... seriously?
Studio yes, demo, No
He tryna be kurt cobain so bad😮💨😵💫🙀🫥
Awful nice
I don't know who this guy is but he's a lousy piano player. Nice song though...
