Hey my name is Tom and I don't know how to explain this, but this is something my daughter and I share this. No one else could understand what these lyrics mean to us.
He actually took a song and made it sound and feel like an astronaut who's floating helplessly through the void of space into nothingness, and at the same time, somehow made it a perfect metaphor for every day life. What an amazing piece of art.

Tears came to my eyes and I felt at peace. My father passed away last month and for some reason this song resonates with me. I have been so down since he left and to be honest quite lost and lonely. I'm not sure why I am sharing these feelings here, but talking about my dad makes me feel better. I've never felt this way in my life. I'm 42 and my father was 75 years old. Everyone tells me it will get better and it's normal to grief but it hasn't yet. The only thing that has helped me from being so upset I'm sorry to say has been drugs. Everyone is talking about the "tell my wife I love her she knows" line but for me it's "the stars look very different today" that absolutely crushes me
This song and the movie The sailor who fell from grace with the sea always trigger thoughts and memories of the sacrifices sailor Airlines’s pilots, and others who spend their life’s on the road while making a living. Being away from love ones who love them. From boys dreaming of fame and glory and men who decide that love and family are more important than anything else we can do with our manhood.
N Q, I wonder what he means when he sings that line. "Tell my wife I lover her very much, she knows" Does he mean "she knows" he is gay? Or does he mean, "she knows" I love her? Any thoughts on that anyone? Dusty the 2nd.
My daughter has loved this song since she was around 4. She's 18 now and still has the same good taste in music. Hope the same happens with your little girl.
And in this song, David Bowie revealed himself to be a poet. You can just picture the lyrics in your head. He was in his early 20s when he wrote this, yet was so mature. There are not even 30-something-year-old songwriters today who are at Bowie's songwriting level. RIP, Mr Stardust. Your music will continue to stand the test of time.
I was a latch key kid in the 70’s. I put the dinner on for the family, did my homework and listened to my older brother’s Bowie albums. Safe times and great memories. Thanks David.
Lyrics: "Space Oddity" - David Bowie. Ground control to Major Tom Ground control to Major Tom Take your protein pills and put your helmet on Ground control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven) Commencing countdown, engines on (six, five, four, three) Check ignition, and may God's love be with you (two, one, lift off) This is ground control to Major Tom You've really made the grade And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare This is Major Tom to ground control I'm stepping through the door And I'm floating in the most peculiar way And the stars look very different today For here am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still And I think my spaceship knows which way to go Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows Ground control to Major Tom Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you? Here am I floating 'round my tin can Far above the Moon Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do. END.
Thank You very much for these other side of the moon lyrics! :D even reading it alone gives me chills, yet so glad major Tom is alright! :DDDDDDDDDD The, "Far above the world" part, is where it peaked for me! :DDDDDDD

Holly shit, my eyes always get teary in the "can you hear me major tom?" part, i just imagine him floating alone, happy, going somewere, maybe to heaven, space, infinity, ill never know... Man do i miss him.
No matter where I am in my life, there’s always a Bowie’s song to make me face my owns feelings . This one even more than the others… I’ll love this artist forever and thanks for him to show me what true art is
I love the simplicity of the perspective of being famous: "And now the papers want to know whose shirts you wear". This is so pure and simple, being famous brings a lot of incredible things, but he only pays attention about this little part, this is so innocent, just love this part
being famous brings a lot of attention for doing something anyone can do. its a chore, and an incredibly hard one at that, just because people know who you are, and you have a lot of money in the bank, doesnt make you happy.
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol
@@stefxcThis song, imo, carries a different meaning before and after his death, for instance. In different decades, its related to.different themes and metaphores. It also depends on where you re listening it from. The song no longer belongs to the artist. It s about drugs, or death, or adventure, or melancholy, or space age, or a thousand more things.

This is the first song in human history to be performed outside of our planet earth. Captain Chris Hadfield covered this on ISS while one of his missions.
It's an awesome thing to introduce your young children to music from when music was real music. My daughter is 27 now but she was raised in a family of musicians on her father's side so she was exposed to everything from southern rock, classic rock, punk, metal you name it. I remember when she was about 6 or 7 her favorite song was Bodies by Drowning Pool. She used to always say the bodies song. I couldn't believe it the first time she asked for me to put it on. Cherish these times bc they are truly gone way too soon
This song honestly gives me the chills and makes me feel alone. That must be how it feels to be an astronaut in space. It must feel so lonely and dark.
Woke up with this song on my mind. I started to reminisce about the past and in my minds eye I relived the time I saw him do this in concert. I was in high school at the time. I am one of many people that were lucky enough to see this done live. He was lifted up above the audience on a large arm floating in a most peculiar way. Thanks for the memories!
Yes, agree. To me, it was and still is about letting go and discovering your true self, without all the conveniences of a support system. David Bowie was a genius.
Not going into the unknown life but for sure fleeing from a scary life... and thus going from the frying pan into the fire ! As a reminder, an extract from 'Ashes to ashes': Ashes to ashes, funk to funky We know Major Tom's a junkie Strung out in heaven's high Hitting an all-time low

"For here am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world, planet earth is blue and there is nothing I can do"........when the song breaks into this gorgeous harmony with these words, I always tear up. Our relatively short voyages into space are truly in space ships not unlike a fragile tin can. The astronaut, Tom, is at a distance from Earth far enough to feel a profound sense of being separated from everything he has known and he is completely aware that "there is nothing" he can do to guarantee his safe return to his beautiful, blue planet. Just lovely and heart rending.....
Nowadays you hardly ever hear a track where stereo is used but this track is quite incredible. Try switching the balance from one speaker to the other during the song and it's quite interesting to hear Bowie singing one harmony on one speaker and a different harmony on the other speaker. I found it by pure chance when I had a party back in the 70s and put one speaker in one room and the other speaker in another room.
Actually no. Most songs I've ever heard are in stereo... Often there isn't a large distinction between L and R, but if you listen closely to a lot of songs you will realise there is a difference. Unless it just happens to be the case that by some random chance a lot of the songs I listen to are rare to be recorded how they are? Possible, but I find it unlikely.
@@ry9043 - did you actually listen to the individual "speakers" on this track? You can only hear the countdown on one speaker, and the harmonies are completely different between L and R. It's not just a case of listening closely to notice a difference, it's almost as if it is two completely different songs playing (which essentially it is).
@@probablygraham yes, this song is more dramatic than most I've heard. But even still you said "Nowadays you hardly ever hear a track where stereo is used" which is what I was referring to being incorrect. A lot of song use stereo; though you are correct to say that this one is much more dramatic than most. (Another song to use dramatic stereo audio is "Exist" by Avenged Sevenfold in which there is a solid 15-20 second where your left (iirc) side expirences total silence. It can make you feel disoriented and off balance if you are listening with headphones.)
@Ryan - sorry, I should really have said something like "hardly any modern songs really use the capabilities of stereo" or something. It seems a shame that the technology exists and yet hardly anyone uses it creatively. Another band who went to extremes with stereo were Pink Floyd - especially in their early stuff, and obviously Tangerine Dream. I must admit I had never heard of Avenged Sevenfold but just had a listen and am quite impressed, so thanks for the tip 😃
@@My.Name.Is.Dark. then the lyrics could've been different, and it would've been a different production as well because this song was rush-released for marketing the BBC Apollo Moon Mission.
The story is about his breakup with Hermoine. Him leaving what he knew and venturing into the unknown in front of him. With sadness behind him "planet earth is blue" and an unknown future ahead of him, but not looking back... "my time on earth is through".

Lyrics: "Space Oddity" - David Bowie.
Ground control to Major Tom
Ground control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven)
Commencing countdown, engines on (six, five, four, three)
Check ignition, and may God's love be with you (two, one, lift off)
This is ground control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare
This is Major Tom to ground control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in the most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows
Ground control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you?
Here am I floating 'round my tin can
Far above the Moon

I love the simplicity of the perspective of being famous: "And now the papers want to know whose shirts you wear". This is so pure and simple, being famous brings a lot of incredible things, but he only pays attention about this little part, this is so innocent, just love this part
being famous brings a lot of attention for doing something anyone can do. its a chore, and an incredibly hard one at that, just because people know who you are, and you have a lot of money in the bank, doesnt make you happy.
I read your comment as he sing it lol
He was a true music rock star
i took as more of a satire on the public’s interest in famous people, major tom is in space, yet all people want to know is his fashion choices, which is pretty trivial considering lol, i guess interpretation is in the eye of the beholder lol

6fuufuf
