Me and my grandfather love to go trainspotting in America! For whatever reason there are many railroad tracks set right next to graveyards. Watching trains from a graveyard is a different experience than just watching trains on open railroad tracks.
Not that interesting? Challenge accepted. This unit is a General Motors GP38-2: General Purpose, model #38 (denoting a 2000HP, roots-blown V-16 engine), second-generation. The identifying features of this model are the two radiator fans, lack of noticeable exhaust uptake, lack of roof hump just next to the cab, and the flared bulge along the middle that houses its dynamic brake resistors. Other models of similar appearance (GP35, GP39-2, GP40-2, GP49 ,GP50) have either three radiator fans or an exhaust protruding from the roof (denoting that they use a turbocharged engine). The otherwise-identical GP38AC has a roof hump, while the GP60 has square rather than flared dynamic brakes. There are other things about the engine that can be determined just by looking at the exterior fixtures. Chief among them being the high short hood (left side of the cab, rising flush to the roof) and accessories. High short hood versions of this model were only used by two railroads, which have merged since they bought these engines. The high short hood means this unit was actually designed to run the way it is here even though it looks as though it's running backwards, as a lowered short hood would not only be more practical in operations going that way but was also standard (the high hood cost extra). The twin air horns and bell hanging out over the edge of the long hood (the right side of the engine here) mean this unit as built for the Southern Railway rather than the other railroad, Norfolk & Western - N&W GP38s had the bell hanging over the short hood and only one horn. The two orange flashers on the cab roof also mean this engine has been fitted with remote control equipment.

Top Gear is just not the even near what it was like with you guys around. Matt is cool, but the ginger guy is just a boring, upbeat, bland car guy. You guys were car guys too, but you were fun and goofing off with each other. IT was great! Three experts who knew how to have fun and more importantly, were fun to watch. It's the perfect show! A show in which viewers have fun watching others have fun! Everybody wins! And then it was dashed away... But at least we have May's train videos.

I was thinking it was a lot of horn blowing for a loco which is not moving too quickly but then realised he's going through a crossing. I assume the horn is required for the crossing?

That's Norfolk Southern GP38-2 #5225, an ex-Southern unit under the same number. It was built in January, 1977.
