The big thing that made the old Top gear so entertaining was the fact that they are actually good mates. So even though it was scripted, the interactions and most importantly the laughter and bollockings were genuine. You can't buy and force this same kind of chemistry. The fact that they go out of their ways to mess with eachother also helps.
