CDR Carroll -- we had the F-14As on CVN-65 back in 1984: VF-114 (The Fighting Aardvarks) and VF-213 (The Black Lions). I was ship's company and jumped at the chance to be on the flight deck -- and when on the deck taking pictures, as the Tomcats were ready to launch -- I swear I could feel my heart inside my body rattle! ! I do not know how you pilots were not VIBRATING after a mission. Side note: we had trials of the F-18A at this time as well. The first generation F-18s were DWARFED by the Tomcat side by side. My buddies and I were saying "how could this little thing replace the Tomcat?" I did not get to meet the Hornet pilots, regretfully. During the cat launches, I am not sure if they were hot-dogging it -- but when they launched, the pilot pulled on the sick and they just about went vertical. I wish I still had the video. We all looked at each other and said "Holy S***t!" We were not expecting that. Even though the Super Hornets are much better than the first generation, I still lean towards the Tomcat because of its bad-a$$ design -- it just looked lethal. Love the channel and the commentary! BZ!

Wish I could've seen the F-14 fly in person. I keep hearing how massive it was. Loved it since playing 'Tomcat Alley' on Sega CD. Just a beautiful fighter.

    • @catomember
      @catomember 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@kilmer009 Being in the Navy in 1984 and assigned to CVN-65 was just amazing. I felt so bad for our flight deck crew because they were just about cooked alive while we were in the Persian Gulf. 120+ degrees was the norm out there. While the pilots ruled the skies, the guys on the deck kept the catapults up and the air wing ALWAYS ready. Here were kids barely out of high school, but so damn smart they kept the most sophisticated military aircraft ready for war 24x7.
I really hope CDR Carroll could find his plane captain to showcase the incredibly hard work it took and the prestige of getting their name stenciled on a Tomcat.

Wow....!!! This is my first time aboard with you on an, oh so realistic, mission. I am just gob smacked at the technology available today. I'm not a gamer so not familiar with where things are these days. I used to use Microsoft Flight Simulator back when I was training for my private ticket. But haven't done any since I sold my plane. This DCS simulator that you have is just stunning. Being a retired software engineer I have some idea of the amount of software that goes into making these things work. Things have advance so far since I retired that it is like some sort of magic. I can imagine how you must be "feeling" the G forces that were present in the real thing. I've done enough flying to know that banking turns like those push you down in your seat a lot. I flown a AT-6 and a P-51 so I have some idea. Nothing like a Tom Cat though. This is a very good eye opener of just how busy the world of aerial combat is. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Sir; First I must say that I never served in the military due to 4-F status. My son, however, served the Navy for 20 years. Seems like all branches of our military are always all in on getting the latest and greatest of everything while turning a blind eye to things that would work much better in a scenario lime this. Everybody is seeing Houthi positions in Yemen being bombarded with tens of millions of dollars worth of missles, smart bombs and air strikes. I realize that it is very unlikely and probably impossible, well. maybe not impossible, but for what is being spent on all this incredibly expensive ordinance, how many 16 inch shells could be pumped out of those rifles almost non-stop pulverizing Houthi positions? The savings if the Navy had the foresight to maintain just 1 of the Iowas? I know. It's an impossibility. I very much like your videos and the insight and information you bring to us. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Randall (boy am I gonna get hammered for this post)

Wow, I really enjoyed this video.. :-)
Long ago, 60's some time, I was about 3 or 4 years old when my father took me to work with him. He was Army, Ft George G. Meade and worked WMAR TV Baltimore Md news.
Anyway, there was this new fighter jet, the fastest they were testing. My father asked if I could go up with him, but the pilot didnt think is was a good idea, and they didn't have a fire proof suit small enough for me, so I didnt get to go up, but I was able to stand right next to it....:-( When they landed, my father really looked green, from the maneuvers the pilot made up there...;-) Glad I was there to witness that fast jet!
Hey, to this pilot, can you pick me up someday, for a free ride?...:-)
I grew up on that Military Base. The General used to give me rides in his jeep. I told him back then, around 1962 a female would be General one day...;-)
My father was in Marines first then Army.
I almost joined the Navy at 18, but my father was upset what the recruiting office told me about a condo I could live in, so he went up there to talk to them and I didn't join...:-(
My father always wanted to get his wings, but never did. During a special mission, the chopper he was in, went down over enemy lines. I helped the General get him and another survivor home and was given the civilian award, and pinned by the General. He showed me his log book, and stated I was the youngest to get that award, at age 4...:-)
    My father did aerial photography.
Funny, because later in life I worked for U.S. Capitol police in Washington D.C.,. During the State of the Union, a General approached me, since I had a Star pin on my uniform and no one else did. He asked what it was for. I told him I made Officer of the month, one month out of the academy. Then I told him, one day I will have more stars than him...;-)

Ward you have to direct the wingman to engage. The Wingman AI is legendarily neglected and terrible, and has been that way for a decade.

I started playing DCS about six months ago, strictly Tomcat with the VKB F-14 stick. It's a long, steep learning curve but little by little I'm picking up one skill after another. Next up is getting the comms down so I can get a score when I make it back onto the boat without killing myself. How come you don't used the mirrors?

Matt, would it be possible with your DCS to do a max-speed flyby of the ship? Just wondering what that would look like. Thanks for your outstanding reporting.

Ward, I think you actually did have a pair of AIM-54’s on board. You can see them in the external shot after the engagement.

Yeah, but didn't register on weapons select. Thx for noticing.

Skivies? You’re all suited up in your gear when you fly these, aren’t you, Mooch? 😉. And if you are, I got no problem with it.

The strain during the cat shot and in the merge🤣. Luckily you dawned the g-suit to assist in the pulls during your acm. LSO debrief was: LOBST FTIM TMPIC HAR 4 WIRE OK. Your wingman Cougar had trouble landing on the boat with his 1 wire. Looks like you and Jester are going to Top Gun. It would be nice if the software actually used the E-2's callsign. Also the software depiction during launch is incorrect : topside launch but no waist Center Deck Operator. Hatch was not even open if you look out left front quarter window toward the edge of the lens. May not be a difficult software mod to make as the creators did a magnificent job with all the other physical manifestations of operators on the flight deck.
