      Mooch, are you using the Virpil stick on the Warthog base?
      Get a Virpil base, get the 100mm extension. Drop the center mount to the lowest pegs, and set the curves in DCS to 15 for pitch and roll.
      All that will dramatically increase your precision and reduce the seesawing effect dramatically.

My platoon, Marines, were attached to various boats in the Med and Westpac cruises. Any free time, which being a Marine on ship, is Alot. But I'd spend as much time as possible up on the Catwalks, or bribe talk my way in LSO pit. I could watch you guys all day long.

    A little DCS video tip: When making this type of video I've found it's helpful to turn down the game master volume. That way the game sounds don't overwhelm the instructor's voice as it did a few times here. I hope that helps and please keep up the good work. I learned a lot!

    Tks. I graduated in Class 82/07 in Reese AFB as a foreign student Pilot. Too many years ago. I attended BFM at Holloman AFB. Your board presentation reminded me that time studying and practicing hard all the Air to Air and Air to Ground lessons. When you Sir turned around on the right and simulated the hand on the canopy It made me instantly remember how hard was to keep the head around under all that Gs, to be able to talk on the radio with the wingman and still trying not to loose visual contact with the opponent. Simulator, as you said, will never reproduce the physical strain on the body and on the neck when dogfighting. Many thanks for the good memory both of you brought me back, regards.

      I'd nail his ass in a heart beat. He won't keep eyes on. If he got on me, wingman would shut him down. Airframes don't respond like that video game. You must know your vessel. You don't look at your dash cept to make sure you have the right weapon selected. Boss is seeing every thing, he will tell you when to get your ass back. Tight freakin turn you will over shoot your target going full after or during, before you shot them. Furballs are nasty, they happen. Stay alive, keep your wingman safe 'cause he's going to keep you safe.

    You can tell nasty was a rough problem to solve in the air. He just needs more stick time in the game. Thanks for the video mooch!

  • @ReflectedSimulations
    @ReflectedSimulations ปีที่แล้ว +51

    This was 30 minutes of pure gold, really helpful for us DCS Tomcat pilots. Thanks so much for sharing! He explained the rate fight really well, what I missed is some advice on how to do the 1 circle fight in the Tomcat, say, against a MIG-23. How hard to you pull and at what airspeed to get the smallest radius? Or did I just accidentally miss that part?

    • @dannyd7714
      @dannyd7714 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      From what I gathered he recommends going 2 circle and out rate your opponent at 325 kts and 6,5 G's.
      His #1 bulletin point is maintaining energy where a 1 circle fight is all about turning as fast as possible and you end up bleeding energy trying to get your nose around as fast as possible.
      In the A that was probably a huge no-no. Less so in the B/D.
      F/A-18 and F-16 are probably a lot more suited for 1 circle fights.

    • @ReflectedSimulations
      @ReflectedSimulations ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dannyd7714 He recommends going 2 circle most of the time, but at the beginning he says 1 circle is better if you're cat 3 and facing a cat 2, like a Flogger or a Foxbat. Less likely in DCS, but I'd still love to hear how he achieves the smallest radius.

    • @thomaspalmar2481

      @@dannyd7714 In DCS, the F-16 is actually better in the 2 circle. It'll out-rate the tomcat, albeit slowly. F/A-18C is better in the one circle though. (I fly all 3... F-16, F-18, and F-14 in DCS)

    Very nice video thank you Mooch and Nasty! The "hack" I have been using in DCS is to limit my stick to 50 or 60 so no matter how hard I pull the stick my AoA basically never go above 15. I loose the ability to pull hard of course - but as a novice myself I find it more dangerous to pull too hard and go into the dead zone of 20+ AoA... It's quite surprising to see real pilots also suffering with the rocking wings though!

    Suggestions, Ward: Only show the cockpit view without Nasty in the corner. While Nasty is giving instruction, either have a pointer point at what he is referencing or zoom in on the same. His (Nasty's) voice during initial instruction is more than enough. Watching him outside of the actual dogfight is a distraction and is unnecessary.
    BTW, this is really cool. Can you have other pilots come on the show? Perhaps an old F4 or a Super Hornet instructor or maybe (please don't hate me) an F15 or F16 pilot. Heck, maybe even a collaboration with Haserd Lee? This stuff is great. You're really onto something here. Thanks for the video...☺

    Awe-some! Thanks so much for sharing all that knowledge, hope to see more of this kind of tutorial content that aims specifically at the F-14, also in combination with RIO interaction.
    One question for Nasty: I found it helpful to stabilize the Tomcat when more excessive wingrocking sets in by slightly unloading the wing and adding some gentle rudder opposite to the reversed bank motion. Would that be acceptable by Navy training methods to use the rudder that way because I noticed that while in low energy / higher g-load even tiny aileron inputs are a perfect shortcut into a spiral or even spin. Or would it be more safe to unload alone, push the throttle in to build up energy and adding Gs again? Cheers to both of you, keep it up - and don't worry Nasty, you're doing great!
    One more thing - I added a ButtKicker to my seat to have some feedback in regards to buffeting, can only recommend it, adds so much palpable feel.

I'm sure it's much more difficult for Nasty to demonstrate his knowledge in the simulator since, as mentioned, the G-forces and the 'seat-of-the-pants' feel are missing. Of course, I know he would totally thrash the F-5 and F-15 in a real Tomcat :) I find your videos highly interesting. Thank you so much for taking the time, Ward! By the way, the DCS Tomcat was recently updated again.

    WOW, that is an amazing demonstration. I sometimes think these planes are about flying. In reality, these planes are FIGHTER aircraft, and the penalty for poor flying/fighting is your life. The fighter pilots are very brave and dedicated souls that deserve our utmost respect.

    Thanks for the video. Lots of great info. Nasty did a very awesome job explaining everything. Also an awesome job with the flying as well. The moment he said jester should be fined for saying that made this my favorite video on youtube😂.

    Thanks for the lesson on how to take this Tomcat to a fight. Thanks Mooch for having him.
    Hope "Nasty" will show us how he did those AWSOME and SUPERB carrier landing with the famous "SHxT HOT BREAK" by using DCS World. I am certain so many viewers can learn a great deal of the NAVY's precise discipline in putting the fighter back on deck... in safety and in style!

    Hey there Ward! I'm really glad to see you're staying active with your channel content. I thought at one point you were going to move on to another chapter in your life that did not include your TH-cam channel anymore. I really hope you keep this up because you and Ryan from Max afterburner are both my favorite channels to watch in this genre. You bring an incredible plethora of knowledge and information that is unmatched! Godspeed to you good Sir!

    Pretty awesome. Definitely geeking out over this! Oh and with the most recent update (think it was after you guys did this probablyh) they tweaked the flight model on the B and the G onset is smoother and less twitchy. makes it MUCH easier to avoid the wing rock.

    Hey Mooch! Just want to say I just found you on TH-cam, and I really enjoy all of your content. Especially the mini-series with “Nasty.” I’m an old retired Navy guy too. We have a lot in common. Naval Aviation, guitarists, Aviation enthusiast, civil pilot, flight simmer. I have a Gibson Les Paul custom that I love as well as a few other axes. Also, I have very similar Volair sim setup that you do. Did you ever know a RIO by the name of Captain Stu Bailey? I really miss seeing the TomCat around Hampton Roads. She was a great fighter and nothing was like her when she was in the Air. On the ground though see was a maintenance nightmare I understand, like the H-53 of which I’m very familiar…

    I'm unfamiliar with DCS, but I've flown Flightgear's Tomcat, and was surprised at how recognizable that wobble was. I never realized it was a known phenomenon. Maybe the two sims use the same FDM. I thought it was just me trying to fly with a mouse. I didn't fly it much because it was so hard to stabilize. Fascinating to watch, and much gratitude, US NAVY!

    Watching him fly a simulator like this is super interesting-- I've never flown, and I'd guess that's true for a lot of people who play DCS, too; so I haven never used my sense of gravity for anything but determining how comfortable my chair is. Simulators just steal one of his senses that he uses to fly. It has to be super weird to be in VR but to have lost that completely. It's wild to think about me trying to do ANYTHING under a 6G load, but he would thrive in it. Super cool demonstration.
