- Robert Oliver Reed (13th February 1938 - 2nd May 1999) was an English actor known for his upper-middle class, macho image, hellraiser lifestyle, and "tough guy" roles. Notable films include The Trap (1966), playing Bill Sikes in the Best Picture Oscar winner Oliver! (1968), Women in Love (1969), Hannibal Brooks (1969), The Devils (1971), portraying Athos in The Three Musketeers (1973), Tommy (1975), Lion of the Desert (1981), Castaway (1986), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) and Funny Bones (1995).

Alcohol dependency aside, Oliver Reed was a consummate actor and one of life's true characters. A truly talented actor was Mr Reed and always convincing. RIP, Mr Reed. Your films will live on.

I listened to him coach an aspiring actor.His ability to understand the nuances of a characters motivations was brilliant.
As a young girl 10yrs old, I remember seeing Ollie first time on tv, a movie , I recall I think it was with Sofia Loren.
All I can remember is Ollies stunning eyes - so incredibly handsome.

Two thugs armed with broken bottles messed with him pretty badly once in a public loo- his face bore the scars for the rest of his life! Thankfully he was such a great actor, his star quality overcame the disfigurement.
I heard not long after it happened that got glassed in a bar fight at the Central YMCA in London.
They broke the mold after they made Oliver Reed. I still remember seeing him as Bill Sykes in "Oliver" when I was a kid. What a boozer in real life and the legend grew from there ...
He was about the rudest human being alive at the time, many have taken his place since.

Thanks so much for posting this - it’s so hard to find interviews with his family members so, those parts really give an added dimension to his personality. Enjoyed the whole thing. My favorite actor, he really made you totally believe he was whatever character he played.
I have always loved that character immensely! I've loved him too as the bold dashing gentleman on talk shows getting drinks poured on his head. I never knew the 2 were the one and the same. Wow.
Will, Shelly was a jealous pig who would sleep with anybody and took offense that he was being a consistent gentlemen despite her bad behavior. Carson should have banned her from the show forever. Sean Connery would have slapped her across the stage.

He was an extraordinary actor. He aged very fast due to smoking and alcohol consumption which done him in at an early age. I died very young.

I have great respect for this actor. I always admired his work. Some interviews began to surface about his crazy drunk interviews. Alas the Demon Rum is alive and well I know it personally. But hearing how he died was inspiring, on a binge in Malta arm wrestling sailors! That's so manly Oliver Reed has joined the ranks of Tom Jones and Sean Connery. The only people on earth that would walk away from french kissing me. I am hetero but damn these guys are dripping masculinity. Oh man sad to see Connery and Reed go. Tom stay alive man! If you are the biggest star in Europe, you don’t really need Hollywood. Being a national treasure is sometimes better than being an international nincompoop. British films are almost always superior to American films, Gladiator no exception, which isn’t even mentioned in the above list of his films. Perhaps because he died during the filming or perhaps because, like Alec Guineas in The Star Wars, Oliver Reed thought it wasn’t all that great of a film, after all. NB: I’m American, living now in Europe. We’re not all stupid. 🤓🎓💼
I hear ya. I really depends on if you have a need to be known in America. Many actors move to America to get international exposure, but Ollie Reed already had that.
I'm American, but I've become a complete convert to the British film and television community. My friends and family think I'm weird because I watch more British tv than American. I say don't knock it til you've tried it; you might find out there really isn't much on American tv. And British films just seem to be made with more care.
But me, I'm a weird American I guess. I think anyone who doesn't watch foreign films, who has never seen a film with subtitles, is a philistine.

of course teh big money is there....the one person i regretted seeing cross over to Hollywood was hugh laurie...and the stupid HOUSE he made there....asking a pure bred british actor, well known at that , to act american and speak american..I will never understand that. But of course the americans wanted it...i hope hugh laurie is back in britain and doing somehting wonderfully british...now

Nothing wrong with being divided, you dont see Canada and the US trying to be one. Ulster voted to remain with the UK and still does to this day. Only a minority want a united ireland. NI is quite happy where it is we just have a very vocal opposition to it who used bullets and bombs to try and get their way. They failed of course. NI will forever be British and rightly so.
Ask any 99% of Brits & they will tell you they love our Irish cousins on both sides of the divide.

Yes I did research on it and found some of the stories about how he spent his last day... someone talked about all the alcohol he drank before he even started drinking with the men from the Royal Navy... they also said he was laying down on the floor taking a nap and that's when they realized he was going into heart failure.... I forget the rest of the story I don't know if they said that he died at the hospital or on the way to the hospital... my memory isn't working too good right now and I only just saw this info the other day when somebody said he would have probably lived if it wasn't for something that had to do I think with the ambulance or the hospital people.

I beat a man in a bar in New Orleans for being over 40 and not knowing who Ollie was , I think he was dead by then but I know he would have approved.

Mark Hamill likely took a page from Oliver's book. I definitely agree with you. He might have found it another way, but it no doubt changed the persona of being the young actor who might have been typecast for a Luke Skywalker simple naive guy to a witty gentleman that isn't afraid to be a Joker-pun intended.
