This CD is what turned me on to Bruce Springsteen. The CD had a video with it of the "making of" this album. It has since been lost & I've been looking for it ever since. So excellent!
But I am weeping. This is the song that the final episode of HBO's Deadwood (Ep 12) played that brought me here. And Bruce Sprincesteen is the spitting image of my brother Mikey and he ain't here no more either.

There are many many versions of this song, but Bruce's has to be the most exciting and rousing one I've listened to. Apparently they recorded it without rehearsal!
As a matter of fact I was on a gig with Sam Bardfeld just last night, and he told me that Bruce would basically run down the changes with the band, then the tape rolled after that. Springsteen would just point at you when he wanted you to solo.

My favorite rock musician playing a song made popular by my favorite folk/country/troubadour--Pete Seeger. Doesn't get much better. Only my third-grade teacher, Mrs. Manpearl could play it better. Yep, best teacher I ever had!! RIP--Thanks for the memories.
When I was a kid I would go with my parents to jam sessions where they would play gospel and bluegrass. Dad playing guitar and singing tenor Mom singing backup, this takes me back to the days of my youth, a place only music can take me to... I think I might try to revise some old song's myself, music in those days traveled with the people just as it should today.
A rock star who sings an ancient folk song and make it sound amazing. Such talent!!!
Seeger Sessions album is just a masterpiece.
he's called THE BOSS for a reason
Love this song, just found it and can't quit listening to it.
Deadwood sent me here, and it's been on repeat for a week since then.
I love this Spiritual. Such a soulful song! Very moving and meaningful to me.
Oh the day when the poor and sorrowful will be lifted up! Stand up with vigor!
I love this, and I’m not even a Springsteen fan. Well, I may be now.
Same here!!

Im sure it was rehearsed, but the live recording of it gives it an awesome spontanious feel, like a drunken hootenanny
@@vincentvancraig gives me some serious Irish pub vibes

A nice version of an old gospel. 🎼🙏🏾🎶🎵
This is good. But for another point of view, check out an old recording by the Swan Silvertones.

Very Nifty! Nice blend of the violins and the horns. Great track. Thanks for posting.
not sure why this brings tears in my eyes, but it does!!!
One of my favorite songs. I want it played at my funeral.
Dude what genre of music is this!!! I cant find anything like it. The trumpet solos are something else!!!! Desperation!!!
1:58 It takes great skills to make the violin sound like an accordion

Bruce loves the Accordion 🪗

while a slave song, it became a standard during the fight for the Civil Rights movement. Also it was quite popular and a symbol of the Depression era
My mother, a depression era child would play this song In our home when I was a child--good song sweet memories
David Brewer Bet she'd hug, swing ya and dance, SWEET love MOM you have .
David Brewer Thanks for sharing this beautiful bit of knowledge David!
David Brewer I just love it as a powerful spiritual song on more than one level
David Brewer
To hear a classic gospel version of this, go to Aretha Franklin's version from the Amazing Grace album. Love both versions.
