We sang this song in my 5th grade class. Teacher played piano in the room and every time we sang "low bridge everybody down"" we all had to duck down. It was fun and its part of America history. Love the old american folk songs.

I remember learning this song in music class in the 60's, the music teacher played piano....and I found out later he was quite the accomplished pianist, at the time I was a stupid kid, but I still like this song and Mr Springsteen does a very cool cover.
Oh my goodness, my teacher in 1st grade (1969) played the piano too and this was one of the songs. I loved it! Every day the teacher would ask each student what song they wanted to hear. When it was my turn, I always said "Erie Canal." The teacher finally got fed up with me always choosing the same song and scolded me, "Pick something else besides 'Erie Canal'!!!"

I discovered this via Starfall Reading, my kids love it and so do I. It will always be my favourite but I like this a lot, my oldest likes Bruce so I'll play it for him and I think he'll enjoy it especially the jazzy bits. :-)

This song was written for the original canal, not the 1919 Barge Canal that is today’s Erie Canal.
