Nice. Can't wait to se it in leafs
I really like seeing updates on Tony's bonsai trees. What a treasure he was.
He loved bonsai and also had a great sense of humour and was a lot of fun.
Tony was a great guy. He is dearly missed. Thank you very much for your work with the trees that remain as memories of Tony.
Peter
Thanks Peter. It was strange rewatching one of his videos today. His enthusiasm and fearless can do attitude and humour are much missed. Hoping this tree makes a great recovery and a worthwhile tribute to Tony 👍
I miss Tony, I think you are definitely doing right by this Tree. They are what they are and a known difficult variety at times. Bringing the tree down to a workable height says you have a plan to keep it small and beautiful and that you believe in its future. Both things are very nice. Good Show Jason. Tony would smile. Cheers- -P@
Thank you Patricia. That means a lot 🙏
Thanks for taking such care of dear Tony’s tree, I’m sure that you can bring it back to a happy and healthy life.
My neighbour had a lovely Silver Birch planted her garden that for no reason unless it was the heatwave that we had last year completely died last year.
They are just stroppy difficult trees. They develop beautifully then when you love them they spitefully break your heart 🤗😆😆
Mate you go for it, its your tree now, I loved Tony and to hear his name again on one of his trees even if you’re unsure is cool, it’s the journey dude
Thank you 🙏
Nice work Jason, looking forward to seeing this tree in the future xx
Thanks Becki. The direction this goes in the future is now entirely in the hands of fate 🤞
You did well with this one Jason. Good job. The only thing I would of done extra would of been to wash the old soil out of the roots completely. Other than that you have set this tree up to recover nicely.
Cheers Christophe 👍
Thanks for sharing, Jason. Think you did everything on can do to help this tree to survive. I use the same substrate and do have pretty good success. So, fingers crossed and good luck. 🙏 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
Thank you, 🙏
Most helpful. I have a free which is struggling so I'll try this. Thanks
Good luck Wendy 🙏
Thank you for sharing
You are welcome
I'd probably let the tree grow, and cut the top after it has regained its health. Maybe even plant it in the ground for a year. But the problem with that is that I don't necessarily have the time at the right time of the year to dig my trees up, and some of them have run away. Not literally, of course, but almost literally
😊
It will be left to recover now for a couple of seasons and to see what growth develops and where. 👍
big chops there. Tony would be proud
Ha ha yes 👍
A Tony trunk chop. I nicknamed him “The Preston Chopper” and we laughed that it made him sound like an axe murderer 😂😂😂
Nice Jason hope it does well for you mate 👊👊
Thanks Andy 🙏
It’s future is now in the hands of the bonsai gods 😆
Great work on this one Jason and rest assured it will back bud profusely at the base so stay on top of the buds you actually want to develop :)
That's the plan! Thanks Xav 👍
Sometimes nature takes an equal hand in the styling. These hardships will add grace and individuality to the tree, no-matter the final design. The tree will respond beautifully to your hard work.
I find a large amount of genetic variability within individual silver birches for die-back. I also find that late winter conditions play a role in survival. I always loose more trees (or branches) when we have a very cold spell, followed by a warm spell. Sap flow starts even though you don't see the signs. The next winter blast is sometimes too much stress.
Thanks for this great response Sue. 🙏
I think I see where you want to go with it and I agree with you I reckon it’s going to look really good In the future
Thank
You
And thank you for your comment 🙏
@@TheBonsaiGarden your welcome appreciate your videos
I recently saw a video (I think it was Nigel Saunders) and he said "never fall in love with your birch." As you say Jason they are very prone to shedding branches. It's a shame that your tree did exactly that but that's nature for you.
Yeah these things can be beautiful but unpredictable. 🤗
Well Jason your off to a good restart. I would hope for some lower growth to pop out but I caution you regarding an air layer. I have had zero success and my colleagues the same. I seem to always have trees in the wings to swap out when Birch die in the forest. Keep us updated I especially have an interest for obvious reasons . Thanks
Thanks Jon. I’ve heard of people having success air layering birch but maybe it’s a difficult species. Be interesting to see how it goes. I have a few of these, and a couple oddly shaped so fortunate to have material to experiment with and hopefully improve.
The trees going to look really nice when it’s closer to how you want it
This could still go in a couple of different directions depending how it responds and grows over the next year or so. I’m hoping for a squat tree with taper and low branching, and maybe air layer off the upper part provided it generates branches.
@@TheBonsaiGarden yeah see what you mean as you don’t know how the new growth will come that’s the exciting part of bonsai
Fingers crossed all goes to plan, I can’t see that you could have done anything else then what you have done, hopefully with the fresh substrate it will put on the required roots and make a full recovery. I’m looking for a nice Silver Birch under the instructions of my wife.
This one has such exquisite white bark. Let’s see what the coming growing season brings for this tree 👍
It is still white so looking good 👍
Thanks.
Great to see one of Tony's tree's. Would sphagnum moss mixed in the molar clay help the roots like with conifers?
Yes, absolutely 👍
I'm fascinated by this birch tree, I have no experience with them. I hope you get a lot of backbudding. Are shohin measured for height excluding the pot?
Thanks. Rules on measurement can vary.
You won´t get backbud, if you keep the suckers, because the tree will spend its energy there instead.
Thanks for the tip 👍
Did you do the scratch test
😂
👍👌🙂
