Good concise information on bonsai. I really appreciate your videos and your channel. You impart very good, clear information on your growing techniques . Thanks for sharing your experience. Keep it up, and keep growing bonsai.
I need to start using sacrifice branches. I'm always afraid of not doing it properly. Choosing the wrong branches or the wrong placements. You helped me understand it a bit better! Thank you yet again for the great information!
Go for it! In the end, worst that can happen is that you thicken parts that you did not want to thicken and need to rethink your design. Just take a younger less valuable plant and have a try!
I absolutely love the idea of airlayering the sacrificial branch. 😍 Also never thought about letting braches grow at the underside of the branches to thicken them. Thanks Jelle for sharing. 👍 Have a great day 🙋♀️ Cheers, Martina
Love the Video, learned alot and love that little edible fig at the end, also busy edible fig bonsai have 2 sacrifice branches on my fig, currently busy airlayering one will air layer the other one also later.

Jelle, you do know that propagating new plants by air layer "just because" it is there, is a diagnosable illness? Well, it should be, anyway! I am a chronic sufferer, and that is yet another way that new plants appear in the garden. "Honey, that isn't new, it is part of that one over there." I feel so guilty when I prune a tree but don't take a cutting, or put on an air layer!
Stopped the video at 54 secs to try to answer the question before enjoying the video. Thicken branches and trunk, gain vigor, make some propagation, make a graft. That's 5 but that's all I could really think of.
You could also argue that a sacrifice branch will sacrifice vigor in the main tree. The tallest branch will produce auxin decreasing the growth in the rest of the tree. I’ve seen this quite a few times. Like you I almost always air layer or take sacrifice branches off as cuttings often putting early bends in sacrifice branches. What is not talked about as much is the potential benefits of letting suckers grow grow on bonsai trees.
Yes, a tall sacrifice keeps growth in the rest down. But overall, the plant gain strength, and when you remove the sacrificy, I find the tree is overall stronger. I personally do not allow suckers to grow, as they create lots of lower trunk scars.
am i the only person that saw what looked like opium poppy next to the triden maple? Im sure it problably wasnt opium but i wouldnt blame him they are beautiful flowers and you know help with sleeping hehehe
These videos are becoming more and more useful. Great resource.
Ohw, thank you so much!

Very interesting. The way you've explained, it all makes perfect sense. Great knowledge to bring on pre-bonsai trees.
Glad it was helpful!

You’re too modest my dear, you’ve totally earned your subscribers ! I remember way back when you were wondering if it was worth it?! 🧗♂️?! Xg
I absolutely do! In fact, I had a moment a few weeks ago where I had a string of haters on my channel and wondered the same again.. @@gayefanner731

The main problem is, there is no known treatment, except complete cold turkey: Remove ALL access to layerable material.
@@GrowingBonsai Sadly, that is true. To the detriment to the tree - thus the "get around" is made clear!! Keep growing, I support you! 😜

Aesthetically viewed such branches are not so beautiful.. I'd be very curious of your thoughts about wiring such branches to give them some curves

I have many different poppies growing in my garden. I doubt any are opium poppies!
