Developing my 4 year old, seed planted Europea ash, root over the rock. It already developed an amazing root system . I‘m looking forward to watch the progress of your trees, Jelle. 👍 Kind regards from Austria 🙋♀️
Nice video as always, Jelle! The Chinese Elms over rocks that I prepared earlier this year following your instructions have slowed down for winter, but have been growing well! I can see lots of roots at their base, and had quite some growth in the canopy. Haven’t trimmed them yet, and I’ll soon share an update video! Thanks for the valuable tips!
Thank you so much for sharing, I have 3 Jacarandas from seed (since last spring) and I want to keep them as bonsais, hopefully I can accomplish that. 🙏🏼
Amazing video Jelle. I have been wanting to try a root over rock. After watching this I feel a lot more comfortable with the process. Now to find a nice rock!
Great explanation! I also love root over rock. Yes my rock is too smooth, But I used it because it has memories for me and I needed somewhere to keep it. Haha!
great vid! your explainations are really really clear! how do you water these seedlings over rock? and how often? I'm rather scared they get dry really easily with those semi-exposed roots.
Hi Klaartje, thank you so much! I water with a shower head on my garden hose. I just shower them. I water these at the same time as all my trees, which in summer is 1-2 times a day. WIthin weeks the roots will start to grow out below the cover, typically
Thank you my bonsai brother. You are a pro and a great teacher. What kind of rocks have a lot of tiny character so it looks like a massive scale to extenuate the bonsais scale? Maybe stupid question, but can you grow root over rock in the ground to grow faster?
Hey Jelle. 😊 Great video and tutorial. I have a big rock from a previous failed attempt that I need to find a tree for and have another attempt next year.
Great video jelle! And a littel update to the brazilian raintree you sent me. I got it last week. And it lost almost all it leaves. Put i put it straight in my indoor greenhouse with light and fans. And Its looking good now! Think it going to pull true!
That is a fascinating project. I'm partial to windswept pines grown in that style, might even give it a try one day, if I can get my sister to bring me a nice heavy rock..
Great explanation and very interested about using aluminum foil straight over the young roots. I started my trdient maple and chinese elm root over rocks about 3 years ago and they are still buried in pots. I will start to have a look at them and uncover the top few cm next spring. The hardest issue i find is trying not to rush the process. I have just one completed chinese elm root on rock and that started in 2015 with a young cutting. Your advice is spot on - and do as many as you are able. Cheers for this one, Xav
The idea is beautiful and the stone too I have redbud seedlings, I will try to plant one like you, but the stone is a problem😅, I will try to find one😁
Thank you for the video. I've just one question: you keep the big windswept bonsai at full sun wuthout protection? I mean, the sun over the aluminium foil won't cook the roots? Thanx
Hey Matt, thank you. The substrate on the one hand keeps the alu foil nice and tight against the rock. Next to this, it isolates a little bit, so that the sun does not burn on the foil directly. Or so I tell me!
@@GrowingBonsai thanks for your reply! I meant that maybe the foil and additional pot would shield the roots from the water, and in that case you could put the pot into a flat bucket or such and immerse it. However that could rinse the soil away so I figured it might be tricky to water.
Quick question: it seemed like you used a different substrate composition for attaching the roots to the rock; what was in that substrate? I've collected a few rocks from the local coastline I'm considering for a future project. They're not as cracked/porous as yours are since they're mostly granite or gneiss, but they haven't been worn too smooth yet. Hopefully they should still make visual sense.
I've learned that Bonsai is not a poor mans hobby. Last night I started to order a JBP seedling for 35.00 then when I got to the shipping part it was about 14.00. Then I decided I can't spend 50.00 bucks on a little seedling. I hope to be able to find someone that will let me take a cutting off a juniper or something I can try my hand at Bonsai. In the past I tried growing J black pines from seeds. They would sprout but after they get 2 or 3 inches they would just keel over and die. I would try and prop them up with a toothpick but it just seem like they stop growing. I do have 2 seedlings that popped up in a very large container that my "Firefly" Japanese Maple is growing . I'm not 100% sure they are JBP'S or not. They sure look like the ones I started from seed. It is possible I may have spilled a few seeds in the container. I hope so.!
Hi Jelle, i am a little confused or maybe i missed something?! but it looked like you did not put the cocopeat all the way down to the potting mix before adding the foil. Does this not mean that once the roots get to the edge of the cocopeat, they will dry up and die before reaching the soil below the rock? Thanks Andrew
Hi Andrew, In general I think the area between rock and alu will stay fairly moist. The substrate also serves to just keep the roots in place initially. I think I could hav explained better what I am intending there :)
@@GrowingBonsai Ahh i see, i was worried that the roots would not bridge the space between the cocopeat and the soil below the rock but as you say the foil will keep moisture in. Cheers.👍
Wow Wonderful Bonsai ^^

great vid, only thing I would recco is to grow the material out first in a talll rooting can so you get longer roots to work with to start
yeah, that helps indeed, nice addition

What is the name of the plant you used? Great video!!! New subscriber and new to the hobby.
You mean the taxus, in the title?
@GrowingBonsai again... new to the hobby and learning. The Taxus for all I know could be a style...
Hi Jelle
What a fantastically informative video. I can’t wait to try this out. I was just wondering what’s the substrate you use to fill the pot?
Check out my video on substrate for all the information, but in the basic lava, clay grit and pumice
@@GrowingBonsai thank you very much. I’ll have a look tonight
Thank you for the video. I've just one question: you keep the big windswept bonsai at full sun wuthout protection? I mean, the sun over the aluminium foil won't cook the roots? Thanx
I don't to be honest. Alu reflects sunlight quiete well
Really nice tutorial Jelle. What is the purpose of adding the substrate over the aluminum foil? Thanks, keep growing

Thanks for the awesome video! How do you water the yew? From the top or bottom?
What do you mean? I water the roots, with a hose or watering can, just like all trees
@@GrowingBonsai thanks for your reply! I meant that maybe the foil and additional pot would shield the roots from the water, and in that case you could put the pot into a flat bucket or such and immerse it. However that could rinse the soil away so I figured it might be tricky to water.

Hey, yeah, I used pure cocopeat for it basically just to ensure some moisture is retained!
@@GrowingBonsai would you consider using sphagnum moss?

Sorry to hear your struggles. Try to have a look at a local garden centre. Often small trees can be found there at much more reasonable prices.
