The biggest issue between these two is both want love and affection but neither is willing to understand each other. They are on different wavelengths. They could have been good friends, definitely not cut out for marriage.

I think Diana tried very hard to understand Charles. She knew he loved the theatre, and so did she, so she tried to appeal to him that way. But Charles never wanted her in the first place and constantly rejected her attempts at becoming close to him. He resented her presence, even though it was him who married him for purely loveless strategic purposes. At the very least, Diana loved him, and he even hated that.

For Charles to say to Diana that he loved her was clearly an overstatement. He clearly couldn't love her no matter how hard he tried.

That subtle manipulative twist in the conversation, wither it be intentional or subconscious where Diana wants to talk, be heard, be understood, but then Charles spins it around to be about him and what he’s going through. Diana doesn’t get to speak and explain herself in any meaningful way and ends up having to console Charles.

Diana was from a well respected noble family with English blood for centuries, she would have been the perfect wife had she fully understood the responsibilities of being the princess of Wales and had no illusions about having deep love.
Agree! they had all been victims of those strict royal rules, including Camilla, who was prevented to marry a prince. Charles could have been stronger and avoid this mess... but then again, he'd be caught in another kind of... crownish mess.

He worked for the East India Company in Surat in the Gujarat region of India in the 19th century. He had several children with his local housekeeper. One of his daughters is an ancestor of Diana in an all-female line.
I would like to remind everyone that Diana was very young when she married Charles. He was 32 and already had some life experiences while she was 20 and barely had any. Charles was in love with Camille and couldn't grasp the concept that as future King, his life was no longer his own, and Diana was just trying to make her ill-fated marriage work and find some common ground with her already estranged husband.

I think Charles cared for Diana more like an elder brother cared for a sister but Diana wanted intimate romantic love. Princess Anne was on point. The age gap is actually an age chasm. There was no way they would get along as husband and wife and actually his family knew.

Charles was passionately in love with another woman . That’s the simple reason this marriage failed . He may have ‘ cared ‘ for Diana but it was never going to be enough for either of them . Very very sad 😢

This issue here is that Charles sees in Diana, his failure to set himself free, to live authentically, to be his own person, and to find his own identity. Things that since he was born was what he wanted desperately and yet was psychologically abused by his Father to stay in the mold, and often was ridiculed by peers for having "feminine traits".
The reality is both of them if you look back at how they behaved and developed as children, are fickle, immature, playful, and incredibly sensitive. Charles had those things beat out of him, and ultimately lost himself. In Diana, who is upsetting the establishment by trying to not lose sense of herself and her own identity, he sees his failure. He doesn't feel safe to be vulnerable with Diana, because Diana isn't dependable or reliable to him. He doesn't trust her because she doesn't understand the importance of tradition, she is at a completely different extreme than Camilla who is more neutral, and is frankly, overindulgent to Charles. That sense of instability that he feels from Diana, makes him feel and idealize Camilla to be a firmer foundation and protective barrier for him.
Camilla acts like a sort of prison, where he is able to microdose part of his authentic self while still being encouraged or supported to ascribe to the sterility and stoicism of his role. She's the prison warden that feeds his ego, that acts interested in everything he does to the point where it's borderline disingenuous, and she's a satellite that lets him shine before others and dulls herself in the process (she's frankly dull). Charles needs dull.
Seeing Diana shine and be adored for something he was told he could never be as a child (a real person) makes him seethe.

They barely knew one another when they agreed to that arranged marriage. She was half his age and they shared no interests at all. That marriage was doomed from the start. They were both unhappy. Treating people like breeding horses seldom results in happiness.
20 is not half of 32. You know nothing about breeding horses. Bloodlines are not the only thing you look at when making a match (and the Spencers' is full of illegitimacy, mental illness and substance abuse). Temperament, soundness (physical and mental), performance, fertility, previous issue. You always breed an older, more experienced mare to a younger unproven stallion for success. I would have chosen Camilla over Diana, from the beginning to today.

My late husband and I were 11 years apart, however, we met when I was 36 and he was 47. Our likes and maturity were the same and we had 32 wonderful years together. Diana was 20 and Charles 32. Was more like a parent child relationship rather than a husband and wife. Sad.

After watching the last season I have the feeling that these series were made to paint the royal family white…to show that they are humane. I don’t know, still find what Charles did to Diana very sad. As well as how princess Margareth was treated by the family very disappointing.
