  • Spiritual abuse is wreaking havoc on the church. But because it's hidden and cloaked in spiritual language, it often goes unchecked. In this talk given at RESTORE Chicago, Dr. Wade Mullen explains how to spot spiritual abuse and recover from it.

Thank you for this. As pastor of a church, I’m dealing with a situation where I’m witnessing everything he’s talking about. I am not the victim, but the victim is in our church. This has helped me realize that I am on the right track with helping the victim heal. Some of these tactics will make you feel as though you’re losing your mind.

I think the words on her website of the counsellor he quoted, Dianne Lane berg are disturbing and dangerous and misleading, these are those words: I am convinced that we must start training Christian counselors to work as ‘missionaries’ of post-traumatic consolation and care, able to deliver the comfort of Christ himself to a very needy world.” -Diane Langberg, Ph.D.
No man or woman can deliver the comfort of Christ, The Bible clearly teaches, only Jesus can give the Comfort of Jesus through knowing Christ in the Spirit , and you must know you have the right Spirit, of the one who speaketh from heaven , and not the Spirit of the prince of the world, worried about wordly things. Indeed we should expose this vile evil, but preaching the gospel is clearly a priority so people can be saved, it is the top leaders of the Anglican, catholic and Islamic religions that are not exposing these vile practices and not taking responsibility, in fact they seem quite at ease with these things, why are that leaders of the catholic and Anglican faith praising Islam, when it’s revered prophet shows this vile practice as acceptable? These are the questions that need to be asked, and why are not these leaders actually teaching what the Bible says, and immediately expelling the many in their churches who do this vile thing. I asked a group of Islamic apologists if their books actually say their prophet married a nine year old and had sex with her, they said no, when I asked them why they weren’t reviling the millions of Muslims who accept this teaching, I only got silence. I noted that some literature they gave me said their prophet mohomed , was in the Bible, saying his name was Shiloh, any person with reasonable knowledge of the Bible knows this is an absurd lie, not only did the verse not say he was the last prophet, you only have to lookup the verses that have Shiloh in them, to know those apologists are deceivers.

My pastor used a ton of flattery on me in a group. Really felt uncomfortable at the beginning because I didn't really know much about him. The church then pushed this 60 day worship class that involved all the groups and people had to sign up. The fact the kept promoting it, and pushing it at us made me not want to do it. I didn't sign up, and if it excluded me from bible study then I'd see them when this 60 day class was over.
I was instantly excluded from the group texts. He then texted me randomly asking me if I wanted to volunteer during the work day...I politely said no because I was working but I'm still with God and things are good.
He has since ignores me at church, and a woman I was dating ( who admitted having a porn addiction constantly leading me on for sex) I stopped seeing probably didn't say good things about me.
I go to another recovery group ( I had co dependency issues) and I just hear how men are constantly being abused by their wives.
Im the end I still go to church with a smile because I just hold myself accountable to God and that's it. Let them talk...I don't care.

They kept saying there was not enough proof even though a person who was head of our denomination said that sounded exactly like him. I finally could not take it anymore because the board refused to deal with him or find ways to make sure I was telling the truth. The ultimate insult came when they published an article written by him in our denomination magazine on love! I did not know whether to laugh or cry.

One of the most harmful things I think the church that is abusive teaches, is the idea that our hearts are deceitfully wicked, and that we can't listen to our emotions! I think our emotions can mislead us, but I also believe God has given us our gut feelings to help us see red flags and institutions and relationships. my journey out of abuse has included, finding my self-worth and self-love under God. For my whole life, I ignored myself completely, because I felt like it was selfish and not godly at all. I this was a huge misleading! I am under the belief that if we don't love ourselves, and actually think we are a worthless piece of crap, like a lot of churches teach, we can't fully love the people around us as God intends us to. it was finding my self-worth and self-love that got me out of a highly abusive and toxic marriage that included all forms of abuse. Praise God in the highest for this conference, and the fact that it is available to all of us here, online!

    Keypoints
Notice their language. Charms: flattery, gifts, help (often excessive), and alliances (you and I have many things in common). Flattery: You are the only person who can do this; God has anointed you". See their response if the flattery is not returned. Dismantling: using fear to control, isolation, teasing, bullying, lots of rules. Constantly renegotiating boundaries, having inordinate control of the community, forcing secrecy on their victims, no accountability, supplication (playing victim), excuses to justify their actions, fake apology (actually, we are not like this etc)

I received an invitation to have dinner on Christmas with an old couple, instead of speaking about the Gospel, they were speaking about scary things and rejoicing or double checking how sick they were making me... I spent 3 days on a row having nightmares... At Church itself there were always confused looks, dirty looks, unwelcoming looks... The Lord was good to me and I started getting on youtube home information about narcissists abuse... I didn t open it at the beginning, yet they would continue sending them... When I started reading... Everything matched what I was going through... The Lord is kind... After that I discharged contact with all of them... That's always a question for every kind of abuse. It's on a continuum and often it starts at one end and moves slowly to the other. Abuse always involves a power dynamic. One person has more power because of position, gender, status, job etc. When abuse has happened the consequences are what follows: severe confusion, worthlessness, lack of a voice, loss of agency and of ability to know own thoughts and make own choices, difficulty in relationship with God.

The attitude among many church leaders in America today: "I have a title and a shingle and preach some technically accurate things. Everything I say and do is the pure Mediation of Christ so I am an unquestioned authority. Pay up on the authority of the Word." ... here are the words of a REAL leader ... Col 1 : 24 "I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ for the sake of His body." This and many other verses where church leadership is validated by sufferings have been driven to the perimeter of the preaching as men strive for control of a microphone and a narrative.

    He goes on ...
" I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 [i]Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. 35 I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
More verses left out of the preaching or minimized by skimming over during the "expositional" preaching.

I believe that somebody can be very well intentioned, and genuinely believe they are following the lead of the Holy Spirit. And perhaps that person can perform acts that suggest the power of the Holy Spirit. But these spiritual "credentials" if there is abuse, that is NOT from the Holy Spirit.

Honey, believe me, when the Holy Spirit takes over after the Word of God is spreaded... If you didn t clean your impurities deeply before... The opposite happens, you feel sick and strange and according to Paul in Acts, there was a couple who lied to the Holy Spirit and they even died... Personally, I have seen it also, where people start feeling bad... If the whole Church is totally without the Holy Spirit... You even have nightmares at night... Reason why that s a good parameter to know where you are standing... Modern Pharisees...

First of all, I’ve never seen a church where there is not boat loads of critics and criticism. Secondly flattery. Honor is an important part of any healthy church culture that will be a truly affective organization, because most people are not paid for what they do. Honoring each other , seeing the gold not just the junk is important .There ought to be a balance between the two. To speak the truth in love is the biblical way. Third “the pastor doing what ever he wants “ and boundaries set by the organization. Again a balance , a visionary leader will have a vision, that ought to inspire the people to accomplish the fulfilling of the great commission. That’s not abuse. Jesus did not take a vote to go to the other side of the lake. Fourth, the board “ watch the Pastor to protect the church.” Any church and pastor, or board and pastor relationship that is built on that sort of miss trust is doomed and I feel sorry for the leader who attempts to lead under that. Trust is essential and must be a willing endeavor on the part of the followers. Love thinks no evil . Good steps to avoid abusive leadership, is a clear understanding of church boundaries set by the church on the leadership, and a signed commitment of the leader to follow the guidelines when he excepts the leadership role. Secondly separation of the leadership from the money. Third the pastor to be a part of a confidential accountability group, of strong leaders, other pastors who have permission to ask each other the hard questions on behavior. Who, the representatives of the board have access to for any grievance. One thing often not talked about is abusive boards and churches. This has led to the destruction of many leaders, innumerable I’m sure. Many pastors and families, especially in smaller churches have suffered greatly under abusive boards and church members with no recourse but to leave or just be fired. Great mental anguish and broken hearts. One of the main reasons for short pastoral tenure, and great exodus from ministry. A safe leader, A man whose heart is for Christ glory and honor alone, who really understands life is short and that he must give account before God for how he or she handles the church Jesus suffered and died for and entrusted to their leadership. Very sobering indeed.

To add to my distress, just 2 days ago, (3 years after the bullying and scapegoating ended when I left), an innocent lady who now attends this church and so will be completely unaware that one of the music leaders is a covert manipulator, posted on the church website, a beautiful post, stating how she loves her church and how wonderful its leaders are.
This was a massive trigger for me....these leaders have lied and enabled abuse to continue causing two of us to break down and to feel suicidal.....the rest of the church are indeed kind and genuine, completely unaware of this hateful episode, because it has been brushed under the carpet.....we victims are merely collateral damage I suppose. There is nothing we can do as the abuser is a compulsive liar.....using crocodile tears and playing the role of victim whereas in reality she is just a clever actress.....a covert sexual preditor .....a perpetrator of emotional abuse and manipulative bullying....although a v gifted lady who has very cleverly made herself indispensible and greatly admired by the whole church .....its dangerous and very scary ,that a mature pastor and his wife have allowed themselves and their church, to be so deeply deceived.

"Merely collateral damage": what Ahab and Jezebel thought of Naboth. He just _got in the way_ of their "taking possession of the land" (vineyard given by God to Naboth) that "thinking big" had caused them to desire, so he had to be "thrown under the bus" (by the hired _sons of Belial)_ to _open doors_ for the "dream" to be realized!

the leaders who have the resources and the power to stop these vile practices, but do not , the pope, leader of the Catholic Church, King Charles leader of the Anglican Church , and the leaders of Islam . These are the questions to ask, The Bible says God is to be worshipped in the Spirit, perhaps reading the Bible like a workman is truly what is needed?
    1 John 3:24
“And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”
    1 John 4:21
“And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”
    1 Corinthians 2:14
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
    Hebrews 12:25
“See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:”
    John 4:24
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
    John 4:23
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”
    1 John 3:24
“And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”
    1 John 4:13
“Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.”
    1 Corinthians 2:4
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:”
    1 Corinthians 2:5
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
    1 Corinthians 2:11
“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”
Another good question average Muslims, Catholics and Anglicans might ask, why are their leaders praising Islam?
    Sahih al-Bukhari 5133
    In-book reference Book 67, Hadith 6

Aren't you aware that the Bible warns against flattery? Doesn't the Bible warn against those who do these things? Definitely the Psalms and prophets did, but the NT too. Didn't Jesus warn against blind guides, wolves in sheep's clothing, hirelings who run when the wolf approaches, whited sepulchers, and other serious warnings against forms of spiritual abuse? If the people Jesus described weren't spiritual abusers, what would you call them? Wolves eat sheep. That's where they get their "clothing"..
