I'm happy that you love Costa Rica. The thing about moving to a new place whether it is a new state in the USA or a new country, is that once you move to a new place there are certain things you don't find out until you get there. For example I didn't know that Atlanta has tornados until I moved there. Plus I found that Atlanta is a group oriented place where people are very very clicky. When I moved to Jamaica, I learned that the coastal areas are way too hot for me. I have to live high up in the mountains where it is cool and windy. I also learned that the roads are full of potholes once you leave the highways and most main roads. These are things I learned once I lived here. I had to move a few times to find a place I like. Even when I found this place I love there are still some issues I have to accept that I never thought about or knew about before I got here. I have learned that there are some risks and discomforts I have to accept in order to live here. The benefits of living in this beautiful place out ways the negatives.
I love this! Yes, there are things you don't find out until you actually get there and no place is perfect. You are right you have to discover what truly works for you. And sometimes what you receive is more than the negatives. I love Costa Rica my heart is so alive and happy here with the simple life. I'm glad you have found your happy place in Jamaica. Thank you for sharing your beautiful wisdom.
I also can't stand extreme heat, but I can't live in the mountains anywhere because I have a genetic heart condition and can't live where there's less oxygen. 😩😩
@@yumyumkitty2104 not every mountain is a mountain… some are merely hills. Flatland has an elevation of zero ; as the elevation increases ,steeper land orientation occurs. And temperatures minimize. For me the perfect elevation is 3,300 ft above sea level. The location of my favorite , La Terazza Guest House in Grécia Costa Rica - where the temp range is between 68-82 degrees. Now if you’re going to Machu Pichu in Peru purposeful acclimatiom is required because the elevation is so high, breathing can be significantly affected.
I live in the south and feel being "clicky" is a southern thing. They don't like new people and very close-minded and not open to meeting new ppl. I get it, but it comes off childish to me. But again, not something I knew or realized from visiting until I actually moved here.
I was born in Costa Rica, raised in NY, and now I am back living permanently in San Ramon Costa Rica and loving life here....Thank you for your video....The truth is that you can be happy mostly anywhere as long as you are happy within...
Welcome back to your home country and Pura Vida. Yes, it’s true happiness starts within but find that it’s easier to connect to in Costa Rica, the people, the beauty of the land, the pura vida spirit makes you rethink life. @@juancarlosquesada7074 Yes, Sr. Quesada. I left CR in 69. It was soo different then. Up to about 89, when I began coming to visit my mom, who had retired and returned to CR, it still had the "innocence", the look I remembered, the way of life. Then, it began to grow and change. Society as well. Everybody used to be thin and then, bodies begun to change as well.🤷🏻♀️ The era of junk food, and "richer" diets crept in. Like everything, there's good and there's bad. But life is more tranquil here. Got everything I need. What else can one wish for? Well, I'm 73 now and obviously, can't be as active and "aventada" as I used to be. That's life. Enjoy it as much as we can. Saludos.
I’ve been doing research here and there regarding being a black expat in Costa Rica from America. I’m currently 27 but in my gut I already know that I don’t want to remain in or raise my future family here in the US. We’re in a constant state of survival here and that’s not healthy. I’m planning a trip to visit CR at some point…can’t wait to check it out.
Hiii Sister! I want to first say I am PROUD of you for your awareness and consciousness to see the enslavement that is the U.S. Making the best decision to better your future family lives. @@ArielleLionOfGod I'm in the same position as you. I'm a single mom of 3 and I'm terrified, but I know we're leaving. I'm doing as much research as possible.
I'm Jamaican and maybe I don't understand but, Why is it I never see Americans especially African Americans, consider moving to the USVI? USVI are part of America and with that, you have all the services and conveniences you're accustomed to. You'd be living in a Caribbean culture (formerly the Danish West Indies)yet in America with all your rights and privileges. The USVI have the same laws so you understand the rules. They speak the same language (with a Caribbean lilt) and 90% Black (including mixed people). Somebody please explain why you don't move to the USVI?
Thank for sharing. I think most is education on different areas and I have “heard” USVI is expensive. I've never been so I don't know. For me, I haven't visited the whole world, I truly listen in the moment of where I'm supposed to be. I only go to countries that call me. CR called me for a year before my feet landed here. I thank you for posting because from your post others may consider USVI. Peace and blessings
Hello- honestly I never considered that I’d be welcomed or feel comfortable in Afro- Caribbean nations because of all the hateful comments I see directed towards African Americans from these areas. So, I only consider visiting and/or expatting to Costa Rica, Panama and several European countries.
Thank you sis! I just watched this whole video while i should be working! I was going to by a house in the US in 2025. Im a single black female, 41 years old. After this last election I no longer see the benefit of staying in the US. Planning on spending a year in Costa Rica and seeing if I want to make it my home. Your video was so helpful!
So glad this was helpful and congratulations on your move. I totally love your strategy. Come to CR and see if it is home. And even after a year that may change too. Pura vida and welcome to Costa Rica 🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷
I live in Costa Rica 23 years . From Brooklyn NY and Florida then CR. Check your shoes before putting them on scorpions like inside the shoe. I got stung 2 times.
Once I move there, maybe I can find you lol. I'm from Brooklyn, moved to Florida, back to Long Island and now in PA. I can't wait to leave the US for good. I'm 56 and I've had enough, especially living in Trump land 🤮
Thank you for liking CR. I'm Costa Rican and American. I lived in NY 45 years and retired here 12 years ago. I love both countries and feel comfortable in either one. The problem with many people who move abroad is that they haven't researched the place. Many haven't even visited the intended country. If a move is being comtemplated, travel around the country, see different areas. Live in it at least 3 months. Moving is a huge thing. Selling your home, leaving your job to adventure somewhere else without understanding the culture and customs it's not advisable. Even I had to do it. I left before my 18th birthday. So, I'm more American in many ways. I Returned 20 years later and from then on, every two years. Yet, when it was time to retire, I wasn't sure. I was considering the South West. My husband, from Manchester, Mass., wanted to live in CR. My mom's home, now mine, is in Rohrmoser, SJ. So. We did. He's happy here. Another thing. Rent, don't buy!! That's a big decision, specially when you know Jack about the country. It's not easy to sell here. Life in Tiquicia is simpler, healthier. Guess what. All that time spent in USA reading and watching programs about celebrities...gone!! You live your own life and stop worrying about others or trying to be like them. Less materialistic. Less bs. More into you and family. CRs are like the typical Italian family. They like to get together and do things together. Ok. Enough.😊❤😊❤
Costaricans and Italians descend from the same culture, the latin culture that started in the roman empire. That s why we speak similar languages, both derivated from latin language and have similar customs. They are more intense and loud than costaricans though (, just like the Argentinians their direct decedents ) .
“No matter where you go, there you are.” Lived in CR for 24 years (after living first half of my life in CA), and i will never leave. People who expect the government to do everything for them will not like it here, but people who are team players willing to ban together to get things done will find more kindred spirits than in the US.
@@Krmyas CR is a magical place. It has changed my life in a very deep way. I'm so grateful. I'm glad you have found home and community. You are right where you go there you are
Thank you for this video! I'm so glad you mentioned the diet in Costa Rica vs the U.S. I am extremely lactose intolerant in the U.S., but when I last visited Costa Rica in 2022, I conducted an experiment: I purchased the most sour-smelling white cheese from a stand on the side of the road and tried it. My stomach was just fine! I'm fully convinced that the food in the U.S. is poison.
@@kayskollective3876 thank you for acknowledging this sis! Wow and ain’t that crazy the difference in food between a first world country and what’s considered a third world country. I even started losing weight without even dieting. I’m grateful you also saw the truth 🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷🙏🏿
@@createwithease Exactly! The quality of the food is totally different. I'm not sure if you've visited Cahuita, but the Jamaican food there is impeccable. There's a restaurant called El Congrejo that I highly recommend!
I lived on/off in Costa Rica for 22 years. I'm from California, had properties, amazing house by the ocean, many expat friends, avid surfer, and many good years there. I eventually sold everything and came back to the US because everything changed in myriad ways, both personal and in my community. @createwithease Thank you for the reply. I didn't mean to sound like a high roller. I first went to CR when I was 20, land was very cheap, and it took 3 years to build my house. Back then, it truly was Pura Vida, and still is, just depends on your mindset. I was reminiscing yesterday and binge watched a bunch of videos on why expats (80-90%) are leaving CR. Yours was one of the few with a positive perspective, and it truly is what you make of it. The community I lived in became a drug den, houses getting broken into including my own, motorcycle stolen off my porch, and other things that I couldn't tolerate anymore. But still a beautiful country, culture, and place to visit or live for those who can deal with the ups and downs of living in a foreign country. You seem to have found your happy place, enjoying nature, walks, the simple life. I wish you the best, happiness and contentment on your journey. Pura Vida!

Suggestion: get into gardening. Grow rosemary and lavender. Grow it near the windows and doors. Take some the hers and soak them in a bottle of almond butter oil. After 2 weeks or so it will be infused with the herbs to make a special oil . Put 10 drops of the oil in a spray bottle of water and spray on the exterior walls and windows. It will detract most bugs from the surfaces. You can also just buy the essential oil already made which I don’t know how easy it would be but that is a faster process. It worked for me in the south. Please dm me if you have questions.

@@kymiranee Hi I just posted a new video and it has that information in it. I'm in Costa Rica now! I don't think YT will let me post the information on other people's channels. My channel is EscapeThe Rat Race with Sherry Peel Jackson. You will be able to see the information there.
The reason that People will continue to move to a place today and then move again after few years is because HAPPINESS is not measured by where you live, or geography, it’s all within you. It’s all inside you. A place, money, material things will never fulfill you, your mind will tell you yes, but we all know that our soul needs nothing. American is horrible, but it’s not any better else where. These day is bad everywhere, some worse than other but every place has it ups and down.
Yeeeessssssssssssss…. Happiness is a choice. I feel like there are places that invite you to see your truth of who you are. Ultimately we are whole and lack nothing. This journey of the human experience has many experiences sadness, deep joy, hurt, peace…I’m grateful for CR because it’s deepened my understanding of who I am and awakened my spiritual journey. Thank you for sharing your beautiful wisdom
While I agree to some extent, one has to recognize that violence and mass shootings, etc will take its toll on mental health for a majority of people. Other angry people can affect you and your lifestyle. I am a senior and had to move because of a bully neighbor (same age) and was told by professionals that one cannot live around that very long. It is not healthy. Finally I moved, and realize it did in deed do a number on my mental health. My doctors were 100% correct. After moving, felt free. So while you can "choose happiness", at some point the negativity and fear for your life can and will change you. It just isn't healthy, mentally or physical. . Changing your lifestyle to what suits you better can and will make a difference. Think about the struggling Mexicans trying to seek a better life for themselves and children. The environment does matter. What surrounds you does matter.
I live in Santa Ana and our rental home here has A/C units in several of the rooms. However, we don't use them since it is so expensive to do so. We installed ceiling fans throughout and have some standing fans in a few areas. We have all the windows/doors open all day long and that works for us even on the hottest of days. As far as bugs go, we don't have many exotic bugs around here. Millipedes for sure show up during the rainy season and we just let them saunter on through for the most part - they are blind and harmless. We leave most spiders alone since they are doing the Lord's work! Nothing to be done about flies other than making sure you don't leave stinky garbage around for them to lay their eggs in. Scorpions we just sweep out of the house because they also do the Lord's work. 😁 Ants are a special kind of issue. We kill any ants that straggle in because that is a hassle that you don't want. What I have learned to do for the leaf cutter and other big ants is to feed them. Yes, I said feed them. I put fruits and veggies that are past their prime in designated areas outside in the yard. This keeps most of the ants from eating my plants and stops them from coming in the house to get the dogs food or other random things that accidentally ended up on the floor.
I love your post - thank you for sharing as It will help many people who have questions around living here. I don't miss the AC, I feel more alive being able to regulate my temperature based on nature. It feels more natural and feel more connected to the cyles of the day. I pray I get to the point of doing seeing insects as doing the Lord's work. i had a small victory with spiders because I SAW ONE in action doing the Lord's work. I have a long way to go but will take it one day at a time. I have also researched leaf cutter ants and they are pretty amazing. Like you said any ants that come in - I'm also big on pest control coz I just can't. Glad you are enjoying CR as your home. Peace and blessings to you and your family.
@@createwithease It is amazing how your body can adjust to the weather. We were so spoiled by the A/C in FL and now when I go back to visit I am cold. LOL I used to think I would rather be cold than hot, but since living here in CR that has changed! The bug thing was an adjustment, but it is like you said about the snakes. They would rather be in their own habitat. The bugs that wind up in our home, don't want to be there. If we do come across a bug we don't know, my daughter makes an effort to catch it and place it back outside where it belongs. Leaf cutter ants are amazing! Seeing them essentially mow my lawn is wild., but like I said, I gotta keep them away from MY plants, hence feeding them. Now that rainy season is starting up again, I doubt I will need to feed them as much because the grass and other yard plants will be growing more abundantly and the ants should have enough that they like to eat. It's also nice seeing the birds come to our yard, make nests in our trees and swim in our pool. I enjoy taking care of our plants and watching the butterflies and hummingbirds come by. It really is a different world and I am happy to share it with nature.
i'm so happy that you've found your happy place! I'm also very happy that you were so transparent about your actual LIFE in Costa Rica. I think people are now beginning to tire of the glamorization of moving abroad and are finally ready to see people actually LIVING in their new homes abroad.
I think people need to visit a place a couple of times and visit for a couple of months before making the move. I like the video because it brings up things people may have over looked. You can get some foam strips for the cracks in the doors.
Thank you for your wisdom because sometimes you don't really know until you are here and then the process of the culture shock going through that is a process as well. Ahh foam strips! This is a necessity!!!!!! Peace and blessings

Whew! The food here is better than the organic in the states that is over priced. It's just sad. I'm glad you are being nourished by the fresh fruits in Mexico
Agree. I watch a TH-cam channel and the young woman from the US moved to Mexico. She explained how her skin, brain fog, and other health conditions improved vastly after living in Mexico, eating fresh food, even street food. This was part of her initial videos. Five years later, she just returned to the US and just recently explained all of her health issues were returning and no one doctor can figure it out. Appears diet and our USA food is not healthy. I truly believe that. Our food is over processed, added preservatives, chemicals etc. Do a google search and read just how many of our USA foods are banned in other countries. For me was an eye opener!
I stayed in CR in the early 2000's even bought land in Puerto Viejo very near to Playa Negra, but sold it again because I needed to see other parts of the world Africa in particular, but I did like it there and hung out with the Jamaican diaspora, who made me feel welcome like I was home in Jamaica. thank you for your comment. The people are the icing on the cake. The experiences I've had with the people here are being deeply healing and I am sooooooo grateful. My patience comes from being here, you learn how to be, you learn embodiment of the earth, the people here have no separation from the land esp, especially the Tica's and Tico's and that changes the way you move in life daily. It is more slow, present and in allowance of all things because you know that you can't control anything and there is this underlying trust that all things will eventually work themselves out in divine timing. I get it! I really do. I grew up with a bug phobia and I’ve surprised myself. The bugs are bugging in Cosa Rica we’ll keep it 100. Somehow I have healed my phobias in this country. It’s possible if that helps but truly understand. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for this very informative, keepin' it real video. 😊 I would love to visit CR in July/August of this year. I will definitely VISIT the tropical areas to see the beautiful birds/nature, but can you recommend an area I can rent an Airbnb where there's no cockroaches or mosquitos? I hate them both, equally! 😩😩

Hi Grace, hello from Dominican Republic. I really enjoyed to hear you talking about Costa Rica. Its a pleasure to hear you, so relax and well expressed. Disfruta cada momento en ese pais, que Dios te cuide siempre !!
One thing I will Never forget is that One of my clients used to fly in from Costa Rica every month because she own a hotel/restaurant all of a sudden I didn’t see her for a couple of months and what happened was she ate farmed Fish 🐟 (tilapia,) and Instead of feeding the fish with food, they fed the fish with metal and it got into her blood system. This was a vibrant woman who would run miles she came to see me an was using a walker. She was only 45 years old and her biggest deal was that the doctors were not that great in Costa Rica the medical care wasn’t top notch so she ended up having to come to the states monthly to get some sort of special treatments and seek better professional medical help..😢 so sad because she was beautiful and her husband was devastated… This was a few years ago maybe things have changed ??? Maybe The medical profession Is much better now?
Thank you for sharing. I think you have to be aware and trust your instinct. I don’t eat everywhere here just like in the states too. I don’t know much about the medical here yet. I know it’s a more intimate experience, like I could directly message a dentist. Thank you for the insight
I have heard and read similar stories and several were regarding Costa Rica healthcare. But having said that, think many Americans can't afford healthcare here so some is better than none. There are also several plans that people choose which might affect the type of care. (Just don't know) I have questioned many physicians here in the US yet I pay more. While I am searching for another country, and am a senior, the healthcare issue is a huge concern. The same countries pop up over and over for good and bad healthcare. The USA is the most expensive but not always the best. Japan and the more expensive countries (Norway, Sweden, Switzerland) always pop up as being the best. Smaller countries- lacking.
Hello Grace - thanks so much for this reality check - I'm still coming to live there - even more now! What area are you in? And where are the communities? You haven't mention any specific places and CR is not as small as people think it is. Thanks again - I'm loving you videos -
Thank you! I haven’t mentioned any places for safety reasons. You do have to be aware in CR. I will be creating a Facebook group as I’ve had so many reach out. If you’re interested as we’ll be sharing the specifics hit me up on FB or IG. The next video I have coming will just melt your heart on the healing land of Costa Rica. I did a short with the waterfall and humming bird. This country is deeply beautiful and healing 🙏🏿🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷pura vida
When I travel I never use my card abroad… it’s too risky… whilst abroad recently I needed some cash but went into the back to Exchange some money if I had used my card abroad without letting my bank know my card would have been cancelled immediately as they think it’s fraud or that my card is stolen…
Yes, traveling internationally you have to have more than one option with your money. I always institute minimum 3 backup options. If I sense that I need more, I will do so because the struggle can be real in a foreign country, and you don’t want to have no access to your money. And even if you call your back before you leave, you still may not have access. I had a bill I needed to pay that kept declining payment, had the international feature turned on, but realized I forgot to turn on my vpn on my mobile phone so the IP address was showing Costa Rica. When I turned on my vpn it worked. I have included the VPN in my description because someone will ask. Thank you for your share because it’s an important one.
Thanks for the deep sharing video. Mainly I want to know where exactly do you live to get a sense for comparison with other areas...and maybe if not exactly, you could say generally? Loved that you learned how the spiders can assist to keep you safe + comfy from the other pest/more dangerous insects. How's this all going now 6 months later? Peace, Joy + Pura Vida to you and all for 2025!
@@letsdancetogetheronline this is the Guanacaste area near Lake Arenal. I am definitely growing with the insects and not as terrified 🙏🏿. Costa Rica is a beautiful country this country has given to me time and time again. There is a culture shock that is continuous as you know American conveniences are hard to let go of, just being able to get my favorite products is a real treat now when back going back to the states, fast internet, no outages, navigating rainy season - it rains ALOT during the rainy season but over all this country has given me more than I asked for. Thank you for one of the best videos that I have found while researching living in Costa Rica! I love yhat you are real and honest about how it is to live there. My plans are to eventually move to CR, I am in the pre-planning stage right now. I am going to continue to check out your videos and subscribe to your channel for insight and advice going forward. Thank you!❤
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate you. Just posting life as it shows up on a different country. Life seems easier here. May doorways open for you with ease.
I visited CR about 10 yrs back and loved the simplicity. We stayed in La Fortuna. Since then ive said I would live there. Have been researching for the past few years. If i am to leave the US, it would be either to Portugal or Costa Rica. I was born and grew up in the country side of Jamaica and find the lifestyle very similar in many ways. My mim concern is schooling. I have kids 6 & 4 and heard the school system is very good there, but it seems all the "better" bilingual schools are near San Jose and i don't think i really want to move my family that close to the city. Then again, I'll need to be near places like urgent care/hospitals especially for my babies. But i moat definitely want to move there
It’s a beautiful place to be. I didn’t think I’d enjoy SJ but love to come here once in a while - it’s vibrant and lively. I know a few teachers that teach at the international school in SJ and they say it’s a good place. The level of freedom you gain being here is priceless. I hope you find the place that’s calling to be your home 🙏🏿🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷🇨🇷
Thank you for making it make sense!!!

Yes, Sr.
Saludos.

@@hhsdas6132 Ahh, thank you for the awareness and maybe it will be on my journey. I don't know. How is the cost of living there?
Probably because they do not want to live in the US or any colonialized version of it. Thus the term EXpat is applied.
Hello- honestly I never considered that I’d be welcomed or feel comfortable in Afro- Caribbean nations because of all the hateful comments I see directed towards African Americans from these areas. So, I only consider visiting and/or expatting to Costa Rica, Panama and several European countries.

Ants are a special kind of issue.
That is so smart! I didn't think about feeding the ants so they don't feed off stuff that you want.
Thank you so much for being candid. Especially about the bugs.

What you said about the food. It's hard here in the US.Noticed also in Mexico about the fresh fruits
Around 10:30, there was a sound, what animal was that? Spiders really do help keep the other bugs at bay. Have you seen sloths or monkeys?
That was actually a cow. It made those sounds every day, didn't ask why 🤦🏾♀️it just became a part of the experience. I have seen monkey's and sloths. The monkeys are wild here at night they are active, active some times you think someone is breaking in. And if you are in a high traffic area with monkeys keep your windows and doors closed. Can I grow my vanilla plants there?
Hi, Vanilla plants would thrive here. You cannot bring plants into Costa Rica due to strict biosecurity laws designed to protect the country’s biodiversity and agricultural industries. Unless you can get the plant here, they do search at the airport. You can’t bring in fruits as they don’t want any form of invasive species taking over. I hope you can find the plant in CR.

thank you for your comment. One thing I will
Never forget is that
One of my clients used to fly in from Costa Rica every month because she own a hotel/restaurant all of a sudden I didn’t see her for a couple of months and what happened was she ate farmed Fish 🐟 (tilapia,) and
Instead of feeding the fish with food, they fed the fish with metal and it got into her blood system. This was a vibrant woman who would run miles she came to see me an was using a walker. She was only 45 years old and her biggest deal was that the doctors were not that great in Costa Rica the medical care wasn’t top notch so she ended up having to come to the states monthly to get some sort of special treatments and seek better professional medical help..😢 so sad because she was beautiful and her husband was devastated…
This was a few years ago maybe things have changed ??? Maybe
The medical profession
Is much better now?
Excellent video and update for me !!!

Yes, traveling internationally you have to have more than one option with your money. I always institute minimum 3 backup options. If I sense that I need more, I will do so because the struggle can be real in a foreign country, and you don’t want to have no access to your money.
