Layne was a completely different beast than other singers. A lot of people become taken by the vulnerability Layne showed in his singing and writing. He never lied, never said things were grand, he always just put it all out there. Having been there from beginning to end...I think we all knew it was coming. We watched him deteriorate over time. And MTV Unplugged was painful to me (I don't know about anyone else) because he was in such rough shape. I wish he didn't have to struggle like he did, but at the same time that struggle is what made him captivating. I miss that guy, every day, and I'm grateful we still have the music.

I could see why you could think the lyrics were Layne's cry for help(he did put a lot of emotion in his singing), but Jerry wrote a majority of the songs including Down In a Hole. Layne actually was very supportive of Jerry and pushed him to sing because he wrote most of their songs. Now a great song Layne wrote, Angry Chair. Go through whole albums, Facelift an amazing debut album then they followed up with Dirt, just an unbelievable talented band.

Jerry Cantrell (guitar, vocals) wrote 'Man in the box' about censorship, I think from Alice In Chains' first experience w/ the music industry. AIC's main songwriter is Jerry Cantrell, but Layne Staley did contribute lyrics and a few songs of his own.
Layne's lyrics to the song 'Nutshell' was a very sad depiction of his mindset w/ his addictions... His last songs he recorded w/ AIC before he passed away were 'Get born again' and 'Died'... He seemed to be resigned to the reality that he wasn't going to be alive much longer in the lyrics. In 'Died', he was still grieving the loss of his gf Demri Parrott, who passed away from addiction complications in 1996.

Alice In Chains is amazing. Your analysis makes me think about how I used to listen to this music as a kid. The song was about censorship. Layne Staley said "I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf. " Cantrell said "It's about how government and media control the public's perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home. And it's about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you."

For me personally, what's special, what made this band extraordinary, is this sound, this perfect complement of both voices, Layne and Jerry... The lyrics, the singing, the sound, the bass playing and the drums in combination. .. That's what they made them outstanding!
The effect on the voice you seem to hear was Jerry playing a talkbox and the difference between the vocals is because they're singing both a lot of time on many songs, almost every song... (not all!)
I definitely like how you listen to this music and what you like about it. I've been listening to Alice in Chains since 1992 and since Layne left it's a good band, but not the absolutely outstanding band they were in the 90's...!

sounds like your listening to the radio/MTV edit, the original line at the beginning is "I'm the man in the box
    Buried in my SH!T"
    and later
"I'm the dog who gets beat
    Shove my nose in SH!T"
the song is alluding to being about a soldier that is a *prisoner of war* and how they were treated during the Vietnam War
and using that also as a metaphor for deep depression and him pleading to Jesus to come and save him, but no one does, not even Jesus. . . . he asks "sow my eyes shut" so he can't see his "shit" his pain anymore, and also "feed my eyes" as in be given the light of enlightenment, salvation, freedom from the box of shit and pain he's inside of

This was the first AIC video I ever saw back in the early 90's on MTV. It got me into Grunge, I was in high school when this came out me and my friends used to dress like that, haha, long hair and everything. I love them.

Try, if you will, to think of Layne's voice without knowing any personal background on him. He is a truly remarkable talent, and although it may be difficult to do this, try anyway.
Watch Liive at the Moore concert to get another feel from him....he has many. His range, breath control and different variations of singing are amazing.

The whole unplugged set of aic is a pretty good depiction of the depths of his despair. You can see it in his face, and really hear it in his voice. Outstanding performance though.

The "aye-aye-aye" part is both Layne and Jerry through his talk box. But Layne is slightly louder.

For a good live version of this just watch the performance at Live at the Moore. Would and It Ain't Like That recorded for the Singles film are amazing watches. Also Love Hate Love Live at the Moore is incredible. Probably my favorite live performance of any artist.

Your analysis is correct regards the cows and slaughthouse. That is a metaphore for how the music industry stifles an artists creativity. Layne is screaming "feed my eyes"; in other words I want to be creative with my own songs, artistry and direction. The slaughterhouse is the music industry saying NO "Can you sew them shut?" then followed by "Deny your maker" in other words we the music industry made you! then Layne sings "He who tries" and Jerry replies "will be wasted" and so on. They are singing about being imprisoned, enslaved and finally slaghtered by the music industry who has them over a barrel in the contractual world. The imagery of the slaughthouse and cows is the symbolism.
I really enjoy your reactions 🥰

I saw Layne standing in the sunlight and had his blonde curly locks and he was stunningly beautiful. It was either late 1980s or early 1990s. Was such a fun time to live in Seattle and it was electric with talent. ❤

The effect on the guitar is called a Talk Box. Consists of a foot pedal with a tube attached that the guitarists places in their mouth and operates it kinda like a Wah pedal. Peter Frampton used one on Show Me The Way on Frampton Comes Alive, which is considered by many to be the greatest live album ever recorded.

  • @captaintrips8651
    @captaintrips8651 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The effect that you mentioned is a combination of Laynes vocals and Jerry playing through a driven amp with a talk box pedal (think Peter Frampton) and a wah pedal. Also, this is an edited version - “buried in my pit” and “shove my nose in spit”, pit and spit are not the actual lyrics/words, but rhyme with another word that I’m sure you can guess.

The vocal sound quality that I think that you're asking about is Cantrell on guitar playing through a talk box in unison with Staley.
A talk box is basically a guitar amp that sends the sound through a flexible tube. The guitarist holds the other end of the tube in his mouth. He can shape the sound by moving his mouth like he would if speaking or singing, and then it gets picked up by a vocal mic and sent to the PA. Essentially, the guitar replaces the larynx.

By the time THIS album came out, none of us knew much about the under the surface stuff. It was just cool! I remember screaming this song when it came out and loving it.
I think there is a tendency when someone dies to make their whole life about their ending, to forget they had their good days and happy times and moments that came and went and not everything need be seen through the lens of pain and suffering. Some songs were just made because the band all thought they were awesome and wanted to share the awesome with us. As a lyricist though I can say it is way easier to write when you're upset by something than it is to write while happy. 😅 Some of that is bound to carry through in a performance.

There's a live ABC version of "Man in the Box" from 1991 you should check out. I would search around for the highest video quality available. Since it's an older video, some of the uploads are poor quality. But the performance itself is amazing.

The ah ah ah part is him singing but the guitarist Jerry Cantrell is also playing that line on his guitar running it through the talk box which is what gives the guitar the effect of being modulated through Jerry's mouth into the mic, that's the "effect" you were probably hearing
