I saw them 1993, on their European tour, in Stockholm Sweden. They opened with Nutshell and ended with Would, if I remember correctly. I'm a woman of 57 years now; still listen to them. Still get goosebumps! Loosing Layne Staley was absolutely heartbreaking. Where ever You are, Layne; rest peacefully...free from your pains.
This is one of the best live performances ever filmed from any band, Layne at his absolute peak and a complete contrast to how he was by the time of the Unplugged show. Can't wait to watch this, i'll be at work when it goes up but first thing i'll be doing when i get home is coming right back here to see your reaction! RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr.
And the reaction didn't disappoint! What a set of lungs and vocal chords Layne had, and lost in the music...i feel truly blessed to have seen him live and felt how powerful his voice was in person, it's still one of the top 3 gigs i've ever been to. I often wonder what else we could've had from Layne if only he'd got himself together and got clean. Still remember where i was when i heard the news... Looking forward to more Layne-era AiC reacts from you, may i suggest "Would?" (about Andrew Wood, the singer of Mother Love Bone that died - MLB then became Pearl Jam), "Rain when i die", "Dirt", "Rooster", "Bleed the freak" (Live at The Moore), and also check out a "grunge supergroup" he was in called Mad Season, esp the tracks "Wake Up" and "River of deceit".
*This is one of those great concerts...the whole of it. I do hope you try a few from Mad Season. Layne joined Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), JB Saunders. Saunders met McCready in rehab and they decided to do a project with struggling addicts. They added Martin and Staley. Saunders relapsed and died in 1999. Followed by Staley in 2002. Songs from their one album from 1995 to try are: Wake Up__River of Deceit__Lifeless Dead. But I do love them all.*
Every song would do. In my teens it was long gone day but now I would say start with the first song on the album. Wake up is my go too. The whole album is a masterpiece.
Alice in chains and Layne Staley were those performers that sounded way better live than in the studio. I'm so happy you got around to reviewing this song. The whole live show at the Moore is legend.
Every single song on "Facelift" and "Dirt" deserves a reaction. Mad Season is a fantastic record. In short, anything Layne Staley did was awesome (R.I.P). He quickly went downhill with his addiction after his girlfriend OD'd , who he loved very much.
Great commentary! So glad to see a young person being exposed to and appreciating such an amazing talent and performance. How lucky were the people in that audience? Amongst the highlights of a person's life.
The thing about Layne is that you don’t just listen to him. You truly feel him. He wrote this song himself. This was a song about his love/hate relationship with the love of his life. He is still one of the best singers of all time. Love AIC so much. Their songs have such deep meanings and those of us who are empaths feel them deep down.
Some of the best AIC songs Layne wrote the lyrics and some he wrote the music but because Jerry had such a influence over a lot of the music and lyrics that Layne doesn’t get the credit for being such a great song writer. The fact he stepped away from AIC and wrote brilliantly for Madseason proves his ability as a songwriter and artist beyond Jerry and AIC in my opinion.
What a nice surprise on my birthday🎉 I always love seeing people’s first reaction to this performance. I love the idea of comparing studio to live. Layne is one of the few singers who truly sounds as good live as he does in the studio. Personally I try to focus on his talent and not think of his addiction/depression. He didn’t like the idea of people only thinking of drugs when they thought of him so I try to honor his wish. As for stepping back during the solo I’ve seen him step away to get a drink of his beverage. One person also suggested he wanted Jerry to have the spotlight then since as front man the focus was on him much of the time. He was said to have been a kind, considerate person so I like to think that’s what he was doing.
Incredible performance I just wish it was a longer song… I really feel like Layne was one of a handful of singers that can really convey emotions thru his singing…
I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
R.I.P. Layne Staley....loved that dude. One of the best vocalists to ever do it and AIC's first two albums were absolute masterpieces and they did some of the best acoustic stuff of all-time.
Damn, they really knew what they were doing. I kind of feel like the depth of their musicianship is and was kind of subtle. Something about Alice in Chains music seems simple, but there's a precision to this performance that really shows their skill. I'd never heard this one before and from the start Layne set the tone with just a sound, not even a word. It's good to see you again, it's been a while. There's still a bunch of bands I hope you get to someday. Just got into another one a couple days ago that will blow you away I'm sure. But there's also Opeth, Spiritbox, Tool, and more...
I think Layne was looking down at where his drink was. As soon as the solo break came, he reached down to that same area and picked up his drink. Then he stepped out of the spotlight to take a couple sips. Layne's love life was complicated.
Junkhead live singles premiere and love hate love are the best vocal performances of the 90's period. One of the very few bands that sound better live than they do in the studio no lip sync just raw talent and emotion.
Aileen I have been lucky enough to have seen so many of the Gods of metal live, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera and so many more, but nobody, and I mean N O B O D Y brought the power and passion and intensity like Alice In Chains. I saw them in 93 at the world famous Glasgow Barrowlands and they tore our souls apart. They pounded out a set of almost 2 hours of complete and utter emotional and physical devastation that almost killed the capacity crowd. Afterwards we spilled out on to the street and people, me included just completely collapsed on to the pavements. Moshers laid out everywhere stripped to the waist utterly spent, exhausted and delirious with sheer delight. I swear it must have looked like there had been some kind of disaster but it was purely the after effects of the genius of Layne, Jerry and co. I will never ever forget that night. The other thing that blows my mind is how Jerry could get right inside Layne's head and write his pain so eloquently and beautifully. Then you got that astonishing voice Layne had holding nothing back delivering every last ounce of his pain and emotion straight to you. Next song simply has to be Rooster, a song Jerry wtote for his estranged father which actually brought them back together.
A power ballad if there ever was one. God I love Alice in Chains. That comparison you drew with the album version was truly awesome. Your takes are refreshing and highly valuable for a deeper understanding of the performances! Thanks for the video!
Another great reaction! I remember seeing them live in 1992-93 as an opening act for Ozzy. Layne came out and performed in a wheelchair with a cast on his leg. It was a great show!
LOVE HATE LOVE live at the Moore December 22, 1990, is LAYNE STALEY in his prime and UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION. All other bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect. Layne is better live than studio version. One of the very few singers who are better live. The entire Live at the Moore concert from December 22, 1990 was turned into a live vinyl album and VHS called Live Facelift. It cost about 75.00USD last I checked. The VHS has live concert footage from December 22, 1990 of: MAN IN THE BOX, REAL THING, LOVE HATE LOVE, SEA OF SORROW, BLEED THE FREAK, bonus footage of IT AIN'T LIKE THAT live and official videos for WE DIE YOUNG, MAN IN THE BOX and SEA OF SORROW. Jerry Cantrell is the guitar player. He's a certified Riff Lord. He respects any musician who KNOWS their instrument. Layne wrote the song about his tumultuous relationship with Demri Parrott (pronounced Per-roh). There was cheating on both sides. Listen to the song from the mindset of a sociopath. How many times did Layne come back home from being on tour to find another guy just so smitten-puppy love-tattoo-you-on-my-chest in love with Demri at first sight. But the Demri fans think Layne should have lain down and taken that because he deserved it for screwing groupies on the road? There a few stories of her on the road with him where the first thing she thought of was scoring junk before anything else. I've come to the conclusion that apparently to Demri fans the Layne/Demri relationship is a sacred, hollowed relationship and NO ONE is allowed to side with him against her for what she did to him with the drugs and cheating on him, but he was lower than a snake for what he did to her with the drugs and cheating on her. She was so independent, she DID NOT even want to be recognized as his girlfriend (God-forbid that ever happen). Even though the second he told her he wouldn't get her any more drugs, she just turned around and shacked up with the next guy who would do what she wanted. Her family called Layne back home from GERMANY where he was on tour for a damn intervention with her. Layne never thought interventions worked, but he did it for her. There was one instance where Layne sent her out for coke or something, and she came back with heroin. Hell, it wasn't like Demri was headed for a life in a convent when she met Layne and on the day she was to take her holy orders, Layne corrupted her. She already knew how to get drugs when they met. Layne could have wished upon a star a million times over that she would have married him, but she wasn't going to give up the drugs any more than Layne would have, so there was no way in hell she was marrying him. She had such a feminist independent streak. When they were making the SEA OF SORROW video, the girlfriends were all invited down to participate in the video. Every girlfriend showed up EXCEPT Demri. She didn't even show up to support him let alone be in the video. Discussing the title track "DIRT", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." Staley said he wrote the song "to a certain person (Demri) who basically buried my ass". In an interview with the Canadian magazine M.E.A.T. in December 1992, Layne Staley said about the Dirt album cover: "This album cover... I like to refer to it as "revenge". The woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt (laughs), instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn't even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it - she's not happy about it either (laughs). It was real eerie. The girl on the album cover is really Mariah O'Brien NOT Demri. She had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had. Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along)
The emotion in Layne's voce is amazing. He shows of his range a awesome vocal power to the max! You were talking about what he was doing when he went backstage when Jerry Cantrell started his guitar riff. I noticed he picked up a bottle off the stage floor, I would say beer to finish it off and there is nothing wrong with that.
@@AileenSenpai I don't recall why he went off....But it was over 30 years ago. :P I was fresh out of high school at the time. So, at the time, you're just seeing a show...you don't realize you're watching history or think you'll still be talking about this stuff over 30 years later.
I suggest you check out "It Ain't Like That" from the same show. Layne is so full of life and energetic on that song and Jerry's guitar riff is so good. He is up stroking and gives it a great sound punctuating it with a great hook. Please react to that when you want some more vintage and incredible AIC performances. Loved your reaction to this video immensely!💕
This video was recorded on the last date of the tour in their hometown after their FIRST major U.S. tour after the Man in the Box single went crazy ! So Yeah ... im sure he was feeling all sorts of emotions . From that song AND the heaviness of what was happening and about to REALLY change his/their world ! Regardless ...that is a deep emotional song
What an absolute master of the guitar Jerry Cantrell, and Layne was his an equal with his voice. I do treasure this band and all their recordings. I've listened to them since my face was lifted by hate!
Junkhead and Rain When I Die were self-fulfilling prophecies. Layne's public funeral (open to fans, etc) had a huge turnout and it rained hard that day. The sky was crying.
I saw them at the CapCenter in DC they opened for Van Halen Jerry came at by his self with the houselights still on.I was like damn this guitar tech can jam. They played with the house lights on refusing to use any VanHalen stage production Layne rocked the PA system and you felt the vibration he is truly missed.
Awesome reaction! You nailed a very important detail in regards to one of the many reasons why this band & song is so amazing. Aside from Layne being such a powerful vocalist, he and Jerry always seemed to have this captivating dialogue between voice & instrument….it draws you in leaving you wanting more. It’s like a double exclamation !! at the end of every note & emotion.
So this same show, live at the Moore Theater in Seattle, that headlined Alice in Chains who had just returned home from a national tour, was opened by... Mookie Blaylock- who later changed their name to the more familiar Pearl Jam, and the band to commemorate the late front man of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood- Temple of the Dog with members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains also wrote a tribute song to Wood, titled "Would?" This song would be featured on the soundtrack to the movie Singles, written by Cameron Crowe, who was a big Mother Love Bone fan. The soundtrack would also feature Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns", as well as songs from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and solo songs by Chris Cornell and Mike McCready. The movie featured a fictitious band called Citizen Dick, which Matt Dillon fronts. But his bandmates in the movie are Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest was a great time to be alive for music lovers in the late 80s and 90s.
After I watched the documentary on his life and the way it ended .. it’s heart wrenching because I’ve loved him for so long and his voice has carried me through so much. I wish he’d had something that had carried him through his as well.
Check out “Bleed The Freak” from the same show. Layne… was on a whole other level!!! As someone who saw him live multiple times I can tell you this, at his best of times to his worst was always amazing. Hell, the whole “Above” album by Mad Season is an amazing display of vocal artistry.
I used to love to sing this song, back when I used to sing. You feel it so deeply, you pour everything into it, and people can't help reacting to that. So powerful. I always loved that the end wasn't the end, and there's just a little bit more to go. Bleed the Freak, recorded during this same set, is also one of their best.
I couldn't imagine being there. I've never seen a set so damn perfect. The music was all played hard as hell and Layne was absolutely flawless. If I had a time machine that could bring me one place in the past, you'd see me rocking at The Moore this day.
Even though I've been doing Alice in Chains for many years and knowing their music so well. This is the song that I always fall back on if a conversation occurs

Thank you for letting the song play. You are one of the better people talking about my hero
I love the crowd reaction at the end. They KNEW that was special
I'm so glad I got to see AIC and Layne live when I lived in Seattle 89 - 99. Dudes could blow live, the whole band were tight af.
Now you're getting to the good stuff.... I was at that show. ;)
No way! What a performance.....
If you're being serious about that then you are one of the luckiest MFs on Earth.
@@manwithtwoeyes6911 Completely... Got to see almost everyone as they were starting out...Except Nirvana...Never saw them.
@@AileenSenpai Saw quite a bit up there in the mid to late 80's into early 90's... Not to date myself. :P
@@AileenSenpai I don't recall why he went off....But it was over 30 years ago. :P I was fresh out of high school at the time. So, at the time, you're just seeing a show...you don't realize you're watching history or think you'll still be talking about this stuff over 30 years later.
‘Bleed the Freak’ is another must to check out from this ‘Live at the Moore’ concert…:)
If you rewatch that pause he grabs a beer from in front of him and walks off to drink it during the solo
Regardless ...that is a deep emotional song
still got goosebumps.. from the first time I heard that song. 25 years ago. just magnificent
Bleed The Freak and Man In The Box from the same show!! YOU MUST
"It Ain't Like That" is my Favorite AIC song
Saw him live opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers with stone temple pilots and I could feel his voice in my chest. Just raw natural power.
I love you, n this channel, I was a huge alice in chains fan, still am, you do them soo much justice, bless you dear !!!
Luv your obvious heartfelt sympathy towards Layne and his performance...very sweet.
I Love watching you watch these epic songs for the first time. RIP Layne 🙏🏼
Only work one show with him I was raised in Washington state goodtimes ljs 🕊☃️🤍⛵🎅🦄⛄🖤🌹🖤
Merry Christmas and happy new year 🎉 ✨ 💖
Hungout with Jerry he was really cool 😎 rest in peace 🙏 🕊 brother LS
After I watched the documentary on his life and the way it ended .. it’s heart wrenching because I’ve loved him for so long and his voice has carried me through so much. I wish he’d had something that had carried him through his as well.
This is the pinnacle of what a live performance is and should be. I think its by far their best live performance.
Check out “Bleed The Freak” from the same show. Layne… was on a whole other level!!! As someone who saw him live multiple times I can tell you this, at his best of times to his worst was always amazing. Hell, the whole “Above” album by Mad Season is an amazing display of vocal artistry.
So unique that it's tough to compare Staley to anyone else. Epic vocal performance of course, but Cantrell's solo is also perfect.
Absolutely 💯
he is in a upbeat mood this entire show. Man IS a genius. Watch the rest of this show it will show you just how powerful of a performer he was
Definitely one of my favorite Alice in Chains songs. Layne is a legend without a doubt 🙌
Even though I've been doing Alice in Chains for many years and knowing their music so well. This is the song that I always fall back on if a conversation occurs
This is such a great song and evokes so many emotions every time I listen to it. Thank you for reacting to this one!!
Yes! I've been waiting for your reaction to this song...keep your deep dive going. In my opinion Layne had the greatest voice of all time. Like I said please keep your journey going ..I'm loving it!
Thank you for doing this song Aileen. It's really good. I hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas...☺️
They blew everyone away back in the day. Lucky enough to witness it once!
Your lovely face ,
And the expressions it makes, legitimate passion,
And that's what it takes!!!
Thankyou for every video!! Love from Cessnock NSW Australia 🤘🤘🤘🇭🇲🇭🇷
One of the BEST live performances EVER!!! Layne was just spectacular....PERIOD. You need to check out the Unplugged album. Great music! RIP Layne!
I hope you have a great Holiday season, AND VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅 🎄 AILEEN!!!
My only claim to fame is having been at this show as well as the Unplugged for both AIC and STP.
Thank you for this. One of my fave AIC songs that needed some love IMO!
Story goes people in the the front rows could feel his voice. There will never another. 😢
One of the coolest songs ever.
Listen to Mad season "wake up" layne would blow you away vocally. A masterpiece of a song
ahh shit, you did the live at the moore. so many alice in chains songs from this show top tier. bleed the freak. man in the box. this is prime layne. thanks for this reaction!
Growing up w this as part of the soundtrack of my youth was magical.
Thank you for doing this 📹...this is pure joy to watch....
Your stank face when it got heavy was the best! Thank you
His work is like a raw grindstone that works on your soul.
I'm pretty sure the song was about a child abduction in the news at the time. Common dark grunge theme. Nirvana Poly, STP, Plush
You take a break when you can during a solo. This is my favorite AIC performance
I couldn’t agree with you more Aileen, I love this band right from the start, and bought every album as it came out, he was one of those that hurt when he passed, there was so much more he should’ve done. I miss his hauntingly Awesome voice to this day.
The eyes are the window to the soul. I am a AIC Fan from start to present day. While the newer album lack Layne's heart and soul. They are still very good albums. Rest In Peace Layne.
Check out “Bleed the freak” Live at the Moore too it’s just as good 🔥
I'm always glad when a reactor listens to a non-unplugged grunge song. Here's to more Alice in Chains and more grunge!!!
