ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on TH-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

People who don't work directly with sheep, birth to sale, cannot understand how difficult it can be. Cattle are easy. Cattle and sheep walk on 4 legs but that's about all they have in common. I don't see how you do it. My nerves would be shot and I'd never get enough rest.

We have yarding of anywhere from 49,000 lambs to around about 25 to 26,000 old sheep at one sale at any time every sale
8:18 I wonder if the one black/brown faced one hurt the price at all? Idk but it seems the highest priced lambs & mules all done up to look exactly that same. Is it possible that some would-be buyers didn't bid because they didn't want the brown one?

You sell your store lambs mixed Cammy? we always sell the ewe and ram lambs separate, nice sharp ewe lambs always sell better, fellas buying them to sell again as hogget's next year.
Do the marts there not put the weights up on the sale board? maybe they did but I couldn't see them only that you added it to the video yourself, you have some pile of lambs to sell, well done.
Yeah price is on top right. They would pay a premium for ewe lambs but these weren’t really smart enough to make any more that they got anyway 😁

What would be your estimate at the time difference you would have had to invest in the store lambs to get them to 44kg instead of selling them at 36
Its tough at this time of year as i need to move them to winter grazing from 1st Oct so it becomes more expensive. I’d say it would cots more than £16. Plus there is no levvy on store lambs
@@TheSheepGame 15 years ago i used to graze store lambs on tack and used to recon £10 to fatten from October till February and pulling fat lambs every 2 weeks

That was a very good sale to be fair. Price was easier today. My 46kg lambs making £105.
Selling livestock is always a gamble. I sold a goat last week for 100$ ( 103 eu equivalent) at 4 months old. Annoying thing is, as a newborn bottle kid I could have got 100$ and never invested another dime into him. Live and learn, right ?

Hard to justify keeping longer term when price per kilo was higher for your stores! It probably fluctuates but you would like a higher price per kilo for the finished product. Lovely clean 🐑

Good money for the Stores Cami. The difference in price to finish them would never pay you as grass gets scarce and you have to feed.

Why sell market lambs before they are prime? Why not just keep them yourself until they mature to prime then sell?
Have to look at the cost of raising and feeding them on, compared to the price you can get earlier as feeders.
Need to get some sheep up to Dingwall that’s where the big store sales are we had 12,000 few weeks ago 😉😉

All sheep are made of meat; some just wear fancy clothes. 🤣
From what Cammy has said in the past, wool is a relatively inconvenient byproduct, as it brings very little.
Hobby spinners, on tje other hand, beg to differ. 🥰🥰🤣🤣🤣
Yeah the UK is all meat breeds but more southern hemisphere countries keep fine wool breeds like merino which are bred for their wool 👍

We're working on getting Cammy and Sandi together someday, somewhere. She's in Canada. They are in communication with each other. He's working on converting her to FlockWatch. Someday we hope for a physical visit, taped of course!
