- In this video we have another day at a UK sheep auction where we see a variety of breeds and I do my best to try and buy some more stock. There is a bit of fun when a group of sheep escape during the sale!

ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on TH-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

I can't blame you on the splurge for the Cheviots, they just have such a lovely appeal to them with their sweet faces. You picked up two of my favorite breeds today so I'm happy to see them going to such a nice farm (where I can see them again). I thank the Hoof GP for getting me into your channel! You should see if you can convince him to come and chase sheep with you, it would be funny.
He's coming up at lambing time so that should be good!
The Cheviots do so well for you on the grass, lambing on their own, and they looked so nice.

I find it interesting to watch the auctions and different breeds of sheep. Most of them arent common where I live, in fact most people raise cows, pigs or goats rather then sheep out here. Good video and thanks for taking us along!

As an older shepherd I look for controllable sheep. The problem is that you don’t want ‘calm’ rams. So I look for the ram with the gleam who tries to jump ship the highest…then the physical exam before money moves…but it is challenging and anti intuitive for the old guys.
Having grain farmed for 50 years... sometimes you have to spend money to make money. You are increasing your herd and will have more lambs.after breeding. I love your videos!

Know nothing about sheep, but those Cheviots are fancy. My grandfather used to say a fancy cow is like a pretty girl, nice to have but can sure break your heart sometimes.

Auctions are so interesting and seeing how time changes the demand and pricing. As you found others that you wanted to buy it reminded me of buying yarn... its a good deal or really nice yarn and I need more... They look like a sprightly and good group of ewes. I thought you might need a shoe horn to get them all in the trailer. It is joyous to see you increase your flock. Take care.

I have loved sitting and watching ringside at sales since I was a kid. At first it's just admiring one pen of stock after the other, but over time you get to know some of the sellers, what people are looking out for and when people get excited. It's a complex thing to try and understand though. On the whole I am continually staggered at the quality of what dedicated farmers can produce. Thank you for showing us.

Btw, I must see very little modern transportation as I had no idea about double-decker animal haulers! Thanks for waking me up! Our lambs were taken away in a tall wooden-sided pick-up truck! That was back in the dark ages, but as a kid, I hated that day! I loved my sheep too! ❤

When I was at the Stirling tup sale a couple of weeks ago and my heart STOPPED, a huge tup somehow managed to get past the the railing and started coming towards me and my family. Thankfully two strong lads managed to catch him before he got up and ran.

I love the sale videos I grew up doing this kind of thing we did cattle not sheep but same idea. My kids are thinking about doing a sheep project this year for our fair so lots of sheep videos for us lately.

You bought separate pens of sheep and then mixed them in the isolation field. Will you use a pedigree ram for each batch or use the same ram for them all? If you do this, will it dilute the pedigree? Xx
