I've always loved this game. I first got it when I got my Game Boy for Christmas back in 1989, and have played it so many times in the years since. I thought that the work that was done to colorize this was really neat and suited the game well, so I figured I'd record a video of it in case anyone else was interested. It does work just fine on a real Game Boy Color with a flashcart!
The video was recorded using the GBC LCD shader in Retroarch to give it that classic old-school hardware look that we all remember so well.

Loved this as a kid. The uniqueness of it's stuck with me. The different world, levels, enemies, certain mechanics, etc. The mario land series in general was so well done. The charm was there

@@MinecraftJer07 It was too difficult to give the shells complex collision and ricochet physics, so they just made them explode instead.
@@tailuigi IIRC in the sequel there's actual Koopa shell collision somewhat. I guess when they made the 1st game they hadn't figured it out yet.

Ive forgotten how different this game was to the main series. exploding troopas, no pause in transformations, fireballs can collect coins, and a more interesting atmosphere
knuclear2010 Oh yeah, that's what you get with Yokoi at the helm instead of Miyamoto! The sequel was Yokoi as well. I liked them just as much as the main Mario games.

That "oh crap close call" jump @ 51 seconds brought back so many memories of frustration in childhood.. This was one of my favorite games when the GB first came out.

Don't wanna sound like one of those 'I am supergood, so it's supereasy'-people. But compared to most other games of that era of gaming this was probably in the lower third when it comes to difficulty.

I love the contrast between this and the 2nd game. 2nd is low key one of the best most creative Mario games of all time, but they went for higher detail leaving you with less viewable space on screen. Meanwhile, the 1st is a master class in minimal sprite design for optimal viewing space while maintaining enemy creativity and core series gameplay. Watching both in color thanks to dedicated fans is just wonderful.

This colorized version of Super Mario Land may be unofficial but it looks great, and better yet, it runs just fine on the original Game Boy Color hardware!

The nostalgia is painful. I remember playing this when I was younger, I still remember the music. I didn't know it was called Super Mario 'Land' though haha.
I LOVED THIS GAME SO MUCH!
I remember playing it for weeks as a child until I finished all the levels (the bosses usually scared the fluff out of me lol) and then starting all over after I did a couple rounds of Tetris ❤️ Those were the days!
If you'd started over immediately (ie without turning off the game), you'd have got to play a harder version!

I remember fighting over this game with a relative of mine, I wanted to play it so did he, than my dad decided to break the game cartridge to end the fighting, I was horrified, I was like around 6 years old at the time, now I'm 28 and miss the old days.

Hmm... feels like I could beat the game in one run if I were to pick up a game boy right now because I know and remember it so well even though the last time I played it was probably 25 years ago. Like every section had been "burned" into the memory of the brain. Frightening but also fascinating. Back then it was a different story of course.
I absolutely love this game. My favorite platformer of all time! And that’s really saying something. This game was so wired and unexpected. That’s what made it so good. Taking the traditional Mario we all know and love but getting a fresh start with the locations, items and enemies. It even saw Mario with another princess! Nowadays 2D mario games are SO formulaic. There fun, but this game is the best time I’ve had with a mario game. His first portable debut and his best adventure yet. Love ya Mario Land

No lie, the end theme to this game is one of the best video game songs of all time.
I love how the sub world's theme from this game made it as stage music in Super Mario Land 2 for that one stage in the Pumpkin zone.

i randomly had a core memory of this game pop into my head. i google mario game with stonehedge heads and found it. the music really set the nostalgia in full. the water level where you shoot was my favorite level, but also caused me the most grief. what a great game.
All this because Princess Daisy had a plane sitting there, this whole time, with which she just didn't have any piloting skills. 🤷
She had piloting skills, but she'd already flown her allotted hours for the day. No point escaping if you're going to face a CAA tribunal when you arrive home.

One of the very first handheld games that only had a few levels, but Daisy made her debut here, who would go on to achieve superstardom by appearing in a bulk of sports and go-kart racing games.

So you didn't play too many? Yea it was nice back than and it has something unique when it comes to look and feel but gameplaywise it's miles behing Mario Bros 3 and Mario World.
Here's a SECRET: After "the end" the main menu of the game changes, and if you play again, the second playtrough is higher difficulty with more enemies.

Great job, man! There are lots of secrets to be found. I know a couple more more. I knew when my friend showed me the "invisible" bridge and when I was walking on top of the level. It felt like I was "behind" the game. Something no other game allowed
