Maybe I've only watched some older videos, but this is the first one that I've seen of coach Tom as a black belt. What a good surprise, I am so happy for him! He has helped so many people, me included, and his techniques are always on point. He definitely deserves it! Keep on rocking, coach!
I hit this from bottom last week. I was rolling with one of my favorite partners, he’s easily 100 pounds heavier than me and has a wrestling background so generally he beats me miserably for 5 minutes straight. This time however I got a triangle, he started to posture up and instead of trying to break him down I just got the baseball grips and let him pass to side control.
Always love your positive energy and clear instruction Professor Tom! So obvious how much you really enjoy doing what you do! 3-finger grip works well for the no-gi version as well (similar to the gable, but inverted, with the thumb of the "choking" arm inserted between the index and middle fingers of the outside arm, for those who are not familiar). Feels like there is less binding of the wedge than a pure gable grip. But that inverted s-grip is by far the best, imo. 👍
This is easily my fave sub... catch it regularly both on top and bottom.. catches them by surprise. Very easy to put someone out with this too so need to be wary of your training partner..
Ah! Okay, that detail about crossing the spines is really helpful. I’m realizing why this choke hasn’t worked for me in the past. I’ll try to turn my body to 2 o’clock like you mentioned. Thanks for that detail!
i’ve been wanting to add this choke from the bottom to my tool box so perfect timing with the upload. thanks for always having great info p.s. i met you at a tournament in east texas, hope you’re doing well!
Dylan Pham --- I love BJJ, Prof Tom, and I have a deer lease in Henderson, TX(East TX). Dylan. Professor. We should be best friends. Side note: Professor Tom, I have been watching your instructional video for 2.5 years or so and feel in debt to you. Thank you for your commitment to the sport. You are a gifted teacher and I’m very grateful for your teachings! Oss! 🙇🏻♂️
Tried it today in the class, and it did not work well enough, still low percentage sub for me, so probably not worth losing the position for it, yet, unless it’s a friendly sparring like tonight. I do remember pulling it off a few times before, even no gi. Perhaps I need to rewatch the video. :) upd: I did, and found a few details I might have skipped. It was the bottom version.
Started bjj week and a half ago. and very first class I lasted 1m 30s. against a 2 stripe white belt, and escaped a side mount, Your videos are gold!!!

Id pay good money to get lessons from this guy
The nogi version of this is my signature choke 😁
another like from me to you
Good instruction. I've used the Hineri- jime technique, mostly as an escape from bottom side control for many years and you are right. Very effective.
This is the coolest shit ever
Sell rashguards please. The blue and orange ones
