Stealthy Grip To Setup Baseball Choke From Side Control

  • One of the best lessons I ever learned to setup a choke using the gi lapel and collars is to hide your grips, or as I like to put it, be stealthy with them. Take your time so that your grips fly under your opponent's "radar" so to speak.
In this video I show a very common baseball choke from side control, but I show a small detail that you can use to make it easier. The key again, is to use a stealthy grip to setup the choke.
From side control you will get a loose grip on the back of the neck with your thumb. Then with the other hand that is going to go four fingers into the collar. Instead of grabbing the collar first, you slide your hand onto the person's chest. This allows you to get your hand into position without setting off a tripwire. Because the minute your grab the collar, the person will no doubt begin to defend.
Any person that has been training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for any length of time will start to become very defensive as soon as the collar is grabbed. So by not grabbing the collar until the very last moment where we are ready to attack with the choke and move from side control to north south. We minimize their ability to defend it.
So I hope this helps, and again a small takeaway from this is to be clever. Find new ways to setup old moves in BJJ. I've known this move since my second week of BJJ. But by adding this little grip change. It's been effective for me even against higher level opponents.
This is a great BJJ submission from side control and I hope the adjustment helps you with your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training!

What I have been doing to get this all in almost one motion is to go for knee on belly. While you are jumping to the knee on belly slide that hand into that baseball grip then baseball slide. I have been hitting this and side control loop chokes. Great detail with the collar group behind the head. This video is what made me think of using the knee on belly to hide the baseball choke.

The loosening up of the grip detail at the end really made it sink into my mind. I tend to give the death grip wait to early. TlazokamatI(thank you)

Most people have that trouble. Often times, tighter grips are better. But you need a little slack to move around with this one.

Your videos have been very helpful to me for a long time now, and I'd just like to thank you for them and the way you explain n break things down. You also seem like a great guy with tons of humility who has a special insight into the perspectives of others n adjust your teaching accordingly. With that said, once again THANK YOU. You're the man bro

Is there any way to apply a similar concept to nogi? Maybe with a gable grip variation? Or is it dependent on the collar for the choke to sink in?

how deep is your grip on the choking hand? This is something that I'm having difficulty adjusting to when I roll with bigger and heavier training partners since their necks are much thicker.

Break and defend collar grips. :) Never let or at least never let yourself feel comfortable with a person having a collar grip. Fight the grips and the choke isn't an option.
