My new “hobbie”, is putting on my headphones and listening to our Vietnam Vets tell their story! God bless our Vets!! Mr. Harris,,, I’d love to know this gentleman in life, he seems to be genuine and brave, and a REAL American hero!!
Great interview, Charlie. I entered the Army on 25 September 1967 and shipped out to Vietnam in March 1968. I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division also and spent a few days in Dian before being assigned to HHC 1st Infantry Division at Lai Khe. I spent my whole year in Lai Khe. Our tours overlapped except for the few weeks earlier I arrived in country and the few weeks earlier that I left. I was also 20 years old when I got there and turned 21 on April 4, 1968, about three weeks after entering country. Certainly an experience I’ll never forget and one I’m grateful to have survived. Thanks for your service, brother.

My Father was in the Army during Vietnam and these Men have always been My Heroes . I was inducted in the Air Force May 19 and turned 18 June 2 18 years to the day my Mother flew to France ! My brother and I knew that we would go into the military but just not which one . I went in the Air Force and my brother went in the Marine Corps .
If I can raise the money to travel to Maryland Charlie will do a second interview with me. We need to hurry though. His health is not doing so well. I live in Colorado.

This interview is so profound to me. This is an obviously sincere well-adjusted and nice human being telling stories that show he was a trained killer . You really get the feeling that there is no exaggeration and certainly no bulshit to his story. He's just telling you what happened , strange as it was, and leaving the listener to make his own conclusions about whether they think it was right or wrong or anything else . A really nice , polite humble man who you would NOT want as an enemy in a kill or be killed situation. God bless this guy. This is a good man who is a BAD(ass) man . Of all the Vietnam stories I've heard this is the most riveting

Very interesting. I laughed about the part where you were fitted for your Class A uniform. I did the same thing when I landed in Oakland in May of 1969. I was upset because so many guys had been coming home that they had run out of ribbons. The only one I got to wear home was the NDSM. I joined the Army Reserve in 1974 and was finally able to get the ribbons that were due me. Welcome home and many God bless you. By the way, you make a good sized target!

Most Americans are taught we were struggling and losing. We weren't. We were grinding the north to powder. Then they're taught that the special troops were more effective when the reality was that basic grunts had the most firepower and tore the enemy to pieces once engaged. The best part was when he explained the truth about being moved to where the business was not being pulled out. Second to none
