  • Winter storms and the "energy crisis", how prepared are you for a powercut for whatever the reason?
Some ideas on lighting your home in the unlikely event the grid goes down.

I had power go out for 4 days last weekend due to the cyclone blizzard and I lit 2 of my oil lamps, had my battery packs and my woodstove and my dehydrated food. I was quite comfortable as I was use to using it all. All the best Chris from Rick and I for the New Year!

Absolutely agree, little things can easily turn into disasters when you just think you can cope but have never actually tried. It was too dark for filming breakfast in the woods this morning but I am on the case. Best wishes to you both for the new year, the animals too, they need all the help they can get. xx

Missed this video when it came out!
Yeah, spot on. Preparation is the key, and as you said, practice using the kit, that is important.
    Happy New Year ❤️

In a sustained powercut, lighting might be one of the least of our problems, we are a bit too fragile all round, it would end up too much like hard work

You have some classy litterers chucking their vapes! I don't find much more than old communist glass and modern beer cans. I've come across a fair few of those smaller Oil Lamps, they were obviously very popular here, but the upper glass vase part (I forget the proper name) is usually missing, but if you're lucky you'll find them with a small round mirror that fits behind the lamp to amplify the light source. Another old timer trick is placing a clear glass bottle of water in front of your candle, get the level of water right and you can concentrate the light given off for reading or sewing etc.

Good tips on maximizing the light with mirror and bottle. The glass is just referred to as the globe or chimney I think. Those vape devices with rechargeable batteries can be found quite often here, I just picked up three out with the dog today. I will be doing a video on how to use them safely in the near future, they can hold a lot of power and easily drive some bright LED's and can be recharged from any 5 volt source (but need a protection circuit to keep them safe). A real waste considering they are in a device meant to be used once (all the ones I find at least). Hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you a happy and healthy New Year

Work in progress, I do have a few solar panels but probably not putting them to best use even though it is winter. Then there are these electronic cigarettes thrown everywhere which have rechargeable lithium batteries in them, I have been collecting a few for a future video. Best wishes my friend

Excellent! One man’s junk is another man’s treasure! People are so programmed into this throw away way these days! 👍🏻👍🏻

@@MadDogSurvival They are consumers, we are hunter gatherers. The sad thing being that it must be cheaper to make them to throw away than to recycle them, and while a good percentage of them are probably disposed of responsible, a good many lie in the gutter. I just picked three more up on the way to the woods with the dog about two hours ago. Still, as you say, "One man's junk is another man's treasure!" and I am thankful for it 🙂

Absolutely! I’m glad I’m not alone thinking this way! Yep I’ll take free gifts from peoples poor upbringing anytime lol…. Stay safe and happy my friend 👍🏻👍🏻😎👌🏽🇬🇧

Hi Chris, merry Christmas mate, thanks for the video, good info, let's hope we don't have power cuts, and many thanks for all your efforts in bringing us these interesting video's this year, it's much appreciated, best wishe's for the new year to you and your's, Stuart UK.

Many thanks, we do get the odd short power cut for some reason so that keeps us on our toes (prepared), easy to manage the lighting and in our case the heating and basic cooking. It is amazing how much power we use when you even try to replace the lighting with candles and oil lamps, not so sure I could keep a freezer going for long but this time of year not so bad.
I hope you had a decent Christmas and wish you and your family well for the New Year. Chris

@@GrasshopperOutdoors Hi Chris, when essentials go out, power, gas, water etc, that's when we realise how much we rely on these things, and shouldn't take them for granted. Freezers are a big problem , perhaps leasure batteries and an inverter would be the answer, for a while anyway, at least giving us time to eat the best stuff it contained, lol, Atb, Stuart UK.

@@stuartlockwood9645 You are right, I have a few panels and inverter and a couple batteries but you have to try these things to find they may not work as expected. Panels rarely put out the rated output in the UK on a sunny day, never mind a cloudy one. Batteries do not like been discharged to much or too often and are expensive. Motors can pull an awful big load on startup and some motors do not like stepped sign-wave inverters as opposed to true sign-wave. Then you need a decent charge controller (MPPT) and a little knowledge to prevent turning it all into one big arc welder etc etc. Bottling (Canning), drying and salting along with a proper pantry are a better fall back in a long term power outage :-) You are right about the gas and water too, not to mention the traffic lights and petrol pumps :-)
