Batteries For Free:- Well, Almost!

  • Disposable E-Cigarettes contain lithium batteries (Cells) which are rechargeable yet thrown away after one use only. I wanted to see what was involved in safely making use of these batteries to run equipment needing 3.7 volts initially.
The process ends up not entirely free but near enough to be worth the effort and minimal expense. For safety you need a TP4056 charging module, also containing the DW10 chip.
Big Clive has a channel in which he covers many things electrical and has a few videos on this topic. He knows way more about electronics than I do so I suggest you check him out if this interests you.

It's just incredible that people don't care and just toss them outside. Glad you're there to help clean up and it's great you've found a good use for them!
    Cheers 😁

One man's rubbish is another man's treasure, but still it is pretty bad that these things should be so disposable and there is so much rubbish in general. Seems like a pretty poor state of mind to me but I don't let it bother me too much. Tc

Very good Chris, to think all them "disposable" vapes are going either as litter or in the bin .....
I do vape myself but responsibly and I don't use the disposable ones , what a great re-cycle idea , nice to see you doing some electronic work
    Best regards Shaun

Yes electronics was a bit of a hobby of mine a while back so it might feature a little bit in the future. At the moment I am messing about with a Raspberry Pi but mostly it just makes my head hurt 😂

These batteries are just so useful as all the control modules for various cell configurations to keep them from over charging/discharging are relatively cheap and easy to implement. Maybe more on their abuse to destruction later 😂🤣😂 So easy to find I have had to stop picking them up. You-tuber "bigclivedotcom" has covered them a lot.

Hi Chris, that's clever recycling, and you end up after a bit of enginuity whith a useful item, glad to see you wearing gloves, not only for the chemicals, but other nasties contaminating them from whoever used them , hepatitis B, among others can lay dormant for years, I don't mean you to wear an nbc suit, lol, just be careful mate, we don't want to see you I'll, your doing a sterling job, and long may you continue. Thanks for the concern, these Lithium-Ion batteries are a bit scary too, the amount of power they can chuck out. I may do some more exciting experiments with them in the future but for the time being I treat them with a good deal of caution. I will progress to battery banks for higher voltage but that gets too technical for the channel as each battery in the chain needs monitoring individually so things never get out of control, but heck it is a good source of free batteries for anyone that can mess about a bit.

@@GrasshopperOutdoors Hi Chris, I gather that those batteries have the capability to have a thermal runaway, dependant on its chemical makeup it carries it's own oxidiser so the only way to put them out is submersion in water, so it might be wise to have a metal bucket of water on hand to drop them into, this runaway usual happens when they short out, starting internal heat build up. But seen as how you apear to be an electricifyer from the old school I don't envisage you having too many problems, if one does go up though get it on video,it'll make good watching, lol. Cheers mate, Atb, Stuart UK.

@@stuartlockwood9645 My two experimental packs have both gone through testing in a biscuit tin. The extra terminals on the commercial batteries are to an internal thermometer to signal to the charger when the battery is getting too hot. The charge controllers I am using will only supply a max upper amperage safe for the battery and will also disconnect the load stopping the battery from discharging to low. I have more experiments to do and I should really test to destruction, for educational purposes.

It's bushcraft in an urban environment. I've been making powerbanks out of discarded vape waste cells. BTW some of those discarded vapes may be the USB rechargeable ones. Handy, because you can also salvage the charging circuit 🖖

    • @GrasshopperOutdoors
      @GrasshopperOutdoors  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes I have found the ones with the charger circuit in them to be very useful. To make use of them at higher voltages, say 12 volts you need a Battery management circuit which monitors each cell in the series or 3 or 4 3.7volt (nominal) cells. For 5 volt applications I just use a double pole, double pole switch to switch two cells from series to parallel for either running 5 volt stuff or charging.

When I first started seeing them on the roads a couple of years ago I wondered what they were. Then when I discovered the odd one was made to be rechargeable I though it must be possible to use them and did a bit more research. I found out quite a few people had already beat me too it, so now I have got them fairly well sorted out as a virtually free source of rechargeable batteries.

It just amazes me how all this stuff works, it was a crystal radio, now you plug an SDR into the computer. Most stuff now is all surface mount, without any markings on them so it is much harder to fix or recycle stuff. When I first joined up we were still using valve radios and morse code 🙂
