      Amazing how much easier the 100th pie is over the first few disasters, but still lots to learn. I do it also because it is just way better than bought pies and at least you get more pie than air, water and sugar. Not that there are some good pies to be bought but this channel is also about self sufficiency and it is amazing just how much food grows all around us, good job not everyone is looking for it though. Many thanks. Tc

    This looks pretty good, I didn't even know that acorns could be used as flour.

    • @GrasshopperOutdoors
      @GrasshopperOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to leech the tanning out of them and realy dry them out. It has no gluten in it so you have to mix it with normal flour (33% acorn to 66% wheat flour or 50/50) but it ekes out your regular flour and adds texture to your dough, (I cover the process in the previous video). Best wishes

    That looks lovely, Chris. How did it taste with custard? Enjoy your weekend.

    • @GrasshopperOutdoors
      @GrasshopperOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very slight nutty taste, however I put quite a bit of cinnamon in so most noticeable was the texture which is slightly heavier and granular than regular pastry. Perhaps not worth the effort from a purely cost/time perspective, but definitely one I will be continuing with, as I am sure I can get the work load down and it will also be better quality when I sort the drying process out. I have a bucket full still to process 😃

    Hi Chris, thanks for the video mate, didn't look too bad, but I'll leave it to your admirable testing on our behalf, I used to eat half a jar of silvers kin onions at one sitting, but not sure if I could handle that pie, stomachs too delicate now, ( I wonder why ). I'm sure as you get better at processing the flour, and perhaps mixing it whith something else to lighten it up the end product will improve. Don't start a trend though as the acorns will disappear overnight, ha, ha,. Cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

      Not much chance of starting a trend as it is a bit labor intensive, which makes us all appreciate a supermarket, but I suspect most have forgotten where their food comes from and the effort (with machinery nowadays) it takes to make it edible. Not to mention how much sugar we have gotten used to in our average diets. Best wishes

    Looks very good 👍 I'm not a cinnamon fan, so I'd struggle with that.

      Mrs G will not eat eat much I bring in from the wild for fear of what she might be eating, quite irrational of course, but then I have made myself ill once or twice. She will be having sponge cake with my plum jam for pudding 😂😂😂

      @@BeercanBushcraft I am having another go as I have so many acorns the heat and moisture is starting them growing. I really need to build a dehydrator which should not be too hard, a box with mesh trays with resistors for heaters (not a lot of heat needed) and a couple computer fans on low volume should do it. Too many jobs though. I have found a few old hacksaw blades (the small ones) just have to dig my grinder out and pretend I am fixing the lawn mower or something 🤣😂🤣

    Haha, I thought to myself, that Pastry sounds crunchy and then, later I understood through my Headphones that a washing machine or dryer was going in the background. 🤦‍I reckon that ought to be counted as a success and yes of course, all of these skills are labour intensive and time consuming and is why they're almost forgotten by the modern, got no time busy Housewives with all their modern conveniences and prefer to buy the ready made product in the supermarket. No more do they suffer the 'Daily Grind' and, how few of them actually know or understand what that term means.
    I don't know whether or not poverty will encourage folk to revive old skills or just rob or protest with outstretched hands. I'm not to sure about how to store Acorns long-term, but I guess in a dark aired cool pantry in a paper or hessian sack, they ought to be okay?
    Was it BIRDS Custard by any chance? You don't realise just how much I miss a Tesco or a Sainsbury as although we have Lidl, the only UK/Irish products I get are Salted Lurpak Butter and Cheddar Cheeses. 😏
    Leaching is best done under running water which, in a sink is a waste of water, but under a guttering downpipe during rain or in a running stream is more efficient of course, IF one has access to such and no human or animal predators are going to interfere with them. I remember collecting my first batch of cherries, turned my back for a while and when i went back to take them, a dog had ate them. Same with my Strawberry Tower, I left the Greenhouse door slightly ajar and Malcho got in there and ate the lot except for a few he squashed on the floor. 😢

      Unfortunately in the UK now, prices are so high (control so tight) that all these labor saving devices like the washing machine instead of the poss tub, a car instead of shanks's pony or bicycle, an electric iron instead of three or four flat irons by the fire, gas stove (inc microwave, kettle and toaster) instead of the range, vacuum cleaner instead of clippy mats and a whacker, two or three allotments instead of Aldi (all things I remember my Gran having) etc etc are not a luxury these days, but a necessity as (generally speaking) us plebs are squeezed for every penny we have to pay the mortgage, tax's and general bills so need two wages coming in to pay for the farce many call civilized society 🤑🤑 Unfortunately poverty can only do so much to bring back the old ways here as we have largely lost the land and wild life, along with the skills, there are now too many of us in a too smaller box.
      Most of it though is just a state of mind driven by the MSM, to which I am largely immune so I for one will continue living more of my own life than the one prescribed, as I am sure you are doing out there in Bulgaria where you have more space and therefore less interference from bureaucracy (hopefully). All the best to you and your family including Malcho. My dog will take any free lunch that comes her way too, being half Labrador 🤣🤣🤣
