"Why you should play Undertale before Deltarune." Because Deltarune tells you it's meant for people who have experienced Undertale when you boot it up.
Many aspects of Deltarune don’t have as much impact or are just kind of weird without the context of Undertale. The Light World is supposed to be ordinary, realistic and mundane compared to the Dark World, but the LW residents being mainly monsters throws a wrench in that unless you’ve played Undertale and you’re used to it. The question of “Do your choices matter?” that the game presents is more impactful when you’ve played Undertale, because that game had many endings and your choices absolutely did matter, and Deltarune contrasts that. Great video! The background is super pretty too.
I have not played undertale. I would absolutely tell someone to play Undertale before Deltarune. I only got all the references and understood everything because I was deeply absorbed in the undertale fandom for about a year before playing Deltarune through play throughs, video essays, fan comics, everything. It’s technically possible to play Deltarune first, and get all the little details, but you should definitely be familiar with undertale to a level similar to playing it before starting Deltarune
I haven’t played undertale but I’m familiar with all the lore and have watched 10s of hours of gameplay because I find it interesting and want to buy it soon. Should I still wait
Okay, I think I haven't played Undertake at this point, but after I have, I will have to say that this statement is not only wrong, but deader than wrong. You will come back to the original, there are stuff to enjoy from the original, but what the newer stuff has speaks more to me personally and I feel like Undertale really was a test drive of how to work everything together. Don't get me wrong, it was a high quality tech demo, with enough effort to call it its own game and it holds up way better than most other games that can or cannot be compared to it, but when you put it up against Deltarune's current development cycle, and long term plans and ideas, you can definitely tell which one has the bigger ambition, care, and creativity, especially when you start to notice all of Undertale's holes. However, Undertale, however, many flaws it may have, from Papyrus feeling a bit like a one and done deal within the greater scope of the game and even within the outer fanbase. I mean, all you do with him is fight him, enjoy his delightful antics, date him, then have him as a side support character, and see how he grows as a character probably with far more things than the majority of the cast aside from Alphys and Flowey but seeing the roles that those two characters that have the most direct relationship with the player it is honestly understandable why. You might notice the fact that I said he's more quantity rather than quality even though what he does have is quality, and that's because Alphys, Undyne, Mettaton, Asgore, Toriel, and several other characters have gotten an unbelievable amount of quality character moments while Papyrus' existence moreso speaks to him carrying and encapsulating some major themes within Undertale that run counter to Sans and Flowey's, and to a further extent every other character. Because when you set Papyrus next to everyone else, he should honestly BE the hero of this UnderTALE. He's got the heroic swagger, he's got no bad vices nor skeletons in his closet, he's the one with a motivation to prove himself, he's quippy, serious, and remarkably intelligent. All of these traits counteract Sans' laziness, Toriel's emotional vulnerability, and motherly instincts, Flowey's Nihilism, Mad Mew Mew (The Mad Dummy if you prefer) fury, Asgore's serious fatherly need to protect others, Undyne's hysterical radical beliefs, Catty's and Bratty's attitudes, Burgerpants' nihilism, Mettaton's status as a sell-out, Alphys' guilt and shut-in status, and more characters. If anything else, Papyrus should've had a spin off game where he was the protagonist of Undertale, but he wasn't, and even when he tries to be the narrative doesn't have the time it demands to be able to progress Papyrus' role in everyone's life. Sans completely undermines and usurps him in the Genocide Route (Say what you will about Undyne and Mettaton, they barely count no matter how anime as fuck Undyne was and Mettaton? Mettaton sounds like a fun distraction, ngl). Overall, Papyrus was straight up robbed of his role to be a paragon, and it is a shame. If anything else, I would not mind having had a mini game with him where I could spend time playing Uno or something with the rest of the spared cast as everyone waits and gives advice on how to face Asgore, with none of it meaning a thing without Alphys being on board thanks to Flowey's help.
@@StoryTeller796 this went from deltarune to papyrus real quick. That aside I did start deltarune and just beat k. Round and it’s really fun so far. Ps, Lancer fan club for life
@THE_ORIGINAL_CAPTAIN_CRUNCH Yeah, all of the characters are great. Personally, Noelle is my personal favorite Lightner, and my favorite Darkner is probably between Jevil, Spamton, and Ralsei. I am looking forward to seeing what the Temmi has to offer, though.
Your acknowledgment of the undertale fandom’s shifty history but STILL recommending content made by them meant alot to me. Ive been in the fandom since the game came out so ive seen the tribulations(😅) but the fact that some people never interacted with the AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL content that this fandom poured out day by day always made me sad. We mightve been a weird fandom but we were a talented one for sure!! Ps, going to read the fic recommendations rn 🤣🤞🏼
Great video! Whenever people say they haven't played Undertale I'm always frustrated by people who tell them to "just get Deltarune, its free!" Its like telling people to watch Endgame or Infinity War before any other marvel movies, you'll still get a decent experience, but you'll have no clue how the universe works or who the characters are. (Also the way you draw UT and DR characters is ADORABLE! I love Frisk especially)
Meanwhile me, who played Deltarune before Undertale... To be honest, it's not necessary to play Undertale before Deltarune, but it definitely gives a huge nostalgia wave when playing it. When I actually started making money, I bought undertale and played it. And after that, I played Deltarune for the 3rd time, and it hit different, in a great way! So I agree that you should play UT before DR. But I was poor, okay? XD Also, the waterfall background looks great! You made a good choice
Deltarune still isn't fully finished. Who knows? Maybe Toby's gonna add details in Deltarune that are straight from Undertale and you won't be able to figure it out unless you ACTUALLY played the original.
As someone who has unfortunately played Deltarune before Undertale, I highly recommend playing Undertale first. When I started playing Undertale after my few Deltarune playthroughs I immediately caught the references and connections that I didn’t get at first when playing the game. If only it could’ve been more impactful for me if I played it after Undertale. But despite how Undertale costs money please try it out first!
my first experience with undertale was getting a ton of secondhand exposure through tumblr. after maybe a month of that i wound up pitching a story on it for my school's newspaper (it had a tech section, but this is still kind of unbelievable to me). by that point fandom exposure had already spoiled the majority of the game for me... EXCEPT omega flowey. who absolutely blew me away. makes me long for a world where i never spoiled myself on the majority of undertale... but i guess that's what deltarune is for, huh?
Darn, I missed the premiere! Be back with thoughts afterwards~ This is a wonderful summary! I fully believe it is intended to be played in this order, as Deltarune displays this (paraphrased) message once you open it for the furst time; "This game is intended for folks who have played and completed Undertale. Would you like to continue anyways?" Your recommendations at the end are all spot-on, too, and bring out the spirit of what Undertale brought about. In the future, I would love to see you cover some fan content, and see what your thoughts are in greater detail. Either way, I'll be sharing this with my friends who I've been trying to convince to play the games. ❤ Tysm Brownie!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Fan-content, for me, is such a large part of how I experience and interact with different media, so bringing some attention to what I love was super important for me in this video :D
I actually played chapter 1 back in 2018 years before I ever touched undertale, and I really enjoyed it. And when chapter 2 came out I was already playing undertale so I was playing both at the same time lol. Although I will say playing undertale made me appreciate deltarune even more.
As someone who joined the Undertale fandom within the last year, I wish I had watched this before playing Deltarune. Growing up I never played Undertale because my sisters did and I thought it was cringe, and the fandom was wild back then that I just wanted nothing to do with it. I played Deltarune when it first came out and just felt… nothing? That’s the best way to describe it. It wasn’t a fun experience and yeah I knew of the characters from the underground, but I thought nothing about it as just a fun cameo. Later on I did buy Undertale because it went on sale I believe around 2019 for the switch, and My play through was wild. But after playing Undertale and finishing true pacifist, I went back to Deltarune and fell in love with it. I’m not saying you need Undertale to enjoy it, but sure as hell does and made me think I was seeing old friends. Anyway that’s my experience with the game. Very well put together video and love your bunny avatar!
While I played Undertale first I didn't really connect to it (I had a good time, but didn't love it, though it's grown on me a bit over time due to nostalgia) and bc of that I didn't really get into fandom stuff at all. I ended up having a similar feeling about Deltarune Chapter 1, but I really got excited for/interested in Deltarune with Chapter 2, which I had a really great experience with due to playing through it in a call with a bunch of friends. Personally, I don't think you miss out on too much by playing through Deltarune before Undertale. The intent is clearly for players to go through Undertale first, but I think (and hope) the Deltarune devs have the foresight to not lock understanding events or twists behind playing Undertale, since there's always gonna be a chunk of people who play Deltarune first despite any warnings. A lot of the themes of Deltarune are very distinct from Undertale, with a bunch of major Undertale themes being totally sidelined, while the stuff Deltarune focuses on is in turn not very relevant to Undertale ("Do your choices matter?" is a question that has an extremely clear and simple answer in Undertale and an alternate answer isn't even really considered, but will definitely be a lot more nuanced in Deltarune, and on the Undertale side Toby's said UT's sparing mechanic is mostly unnecessary in Deltarune and mostly just a stylistic holdover). Deltarune seems to (so far) be focusing mostly on new characters like the Darkners and Kris/Susie/Ralsei/Noelle, with most of the UT cast being minor characters. Gaster is kind of the exception, but honestly I count him as a Deltarune character since Deltarune has already done a ton more foreshadowing for him than Undertale ever did. Characters like Toriel and Undyne who are probably gonna get highlighted in Chapter 3 are almost certainly going to get more concrete introductions there as well. I appreciate putting UT fandom stuff at the end of the video! I haven't seen any of it other than that fanfare video, but they all seem interesting, and its always nice to put all that stuff there.
Haha it’s an accident. I didn’t bring water to the recording session and around then my mouth started getting really muddled, and by the time I noticed my flub I was editing and didn’t want to rerecord.

I completed Undertale two weeks ago, i saw a longplay of it several years ago, but that still didn't stop me from getting hit with emotions, like damn, i still cry like a bitch when i played through it, or when i listen to some of the music Same deal with Deltarune too, lol, Don't forget makes me sob
Undertale is my favorite game. Undertale has some of my favorite characters in fiction. Undertale has some of my favorite music. ...Then Deltarune came along and made me love Susie more. Deltarune's probably gonna be my favorite game by the end tbh.
Very good video! You're super underrated, I can totally see you blowing up in the near future! I sent this to my sister who has played all of the current Deltarune chapters but was out of the age gap for Undertale when it came out. And now, she's now playing it! I feel like your video is a perfect starting point for people who were out of the age gap, much like my sister, to actually pick up the game and go about their own paths. So, like, thank you for the video!!! Keep it up!!!
Multiple times now I have accidentally opened this video only to be greeted by the most emphatic "Undertale" I've heard, followed by a thousand yard stare as I pause the video to watch later It's a vibe
I (sort of) played deltarune before undertale. What I mean by that is I played it fully. I played undertale before that many years ago on my brothers computer once, it was a neutral run because I tried and failed to do genocide. But I never finished it. However before that I already knew the main two endings, pacifist and genocide, and was heavily involved in the fandom. So when I finally got my switch I noticed Deltarune was free and decided to play it since I didn't have many options yet aside from animal crossing. But yeah I agree you should if you could play undertale first if you have never been exposed to either games at all.
Personally, I do like deltarune more than undertake, and I think it's fair to do so. Having a central team of protag and deuteragonists really builds a connection better than a bunch of bosses you make friends with, and also it shows a lot of growth in art and music work between the two. Plus, Jevil.
I played undertale on the switch after watching several people play through the game a year or two after it’s release, but before it it came out on the switch and I was able to play it myself. Deltarune wasn’t a thing yet, but I also watched the chapters on their releases as well before they came to the switch. My reasoning to play undertale first for anyone who would want to know, is simply because deltarune isn’t finished yet.
The Fandom is definitely something. I'd say stay away from Reddit and Twitter with a 10ft long pole. I feel like most youtubers who do theorys/analysis are more down to earth though.
I had heard of Undertale in 2018 and was like "woah" and then saw that the switch version was on sale and was like "take my Nintendo Switch Gold points!". Unfortunately i had spoiled the entirety of Undertale (one of the downsides of having hyperfixations), but i still had an amazing time, and while some people might feel thats its now primitive, i really like doing difficult fights like the sans fight. I got so good that when i was actively going for damageless, i did a few no healing item runs (that was a few years later btw. Took me a long time to even beat undyne the undying, and that was something Herculean to me). But nowadays i can breeze through the genocide run of Undertale in about 1 1/2 hours, (if i had an actual good pc that could use obs i would be doing undertale genocide run speedruns tbh). I had also spoiled Deltarune because i really found Alpharad's video on it funny lol. I actually saw some of the wtf in the community when DR dropped, but it was basically 101Leafy playing the part where Lancer is temporarily "in your party" before darting off. Deltarune chapter 2 I was able to do spouler free, and the Spamton NEO fight was terrifying to unlock. I know this is flexing, but i was literally practicing expecting a brutal fight like Jevil (who's the current hardest fight in my opinion) the night prior, but the obly true death i had was at the teacups (of course lol). At launch of Ch2 i viewed the Dog car scare as a death but if anything thats a joke, no death involved. If anything, i guess that shows I'm ready for DR ch3 and beyond? Undertale, regardless of me basically being Flowey when I play it, is a game i recommend to everyone. Even someone who has very little gaming experience. And Deltarune, (maybe after explaining WDG a bit prior) aswell after Undertale.
Toby did say that undertale and deltarune are both in different universes the soul might just be able to transcend to different realities if it gets bored with undertale.
I played Deltarune before Undertale, I knew about Undertale, but not really the characters or the plot. I absolutely loved Deltarune so fucking much, so I got into watching all of these undertale theories and summaries about the game so I learned most of the surface stuff from that, never really decided to play it though, because it just felt like a downgrade to me.
I dont think playing deltarune before undertale hurts deltarune playthrough as much as it does to undertale playthrough. Sure while playing deltarune youl miss nostalgia vibe and some jokes, but while playing undertale you will miss whole point of the game. (spoilers warning) Because in deltarune you cant actually kill anyone so you not getting any exp which means no reward and from ralsei words fighting someone will lead to bad ending. So why would you lose happy ending for something that doesnt even reward you and makes battles much more boring? With that thought, sparing everyone you will finish the game and moving to undertale you wont even question if you should kill or spare enemies in the game that wants you to play it twice first time neutral second time pacifist and third time never (even tho most people didnt do that anyway including me and played on pacifist the first time and i regreting it) and its not only thing that breaks after deltarune. Characters for instance, asgore in undertale sounds like tyrant that kills anyone he meets, but through the game you understand that asgore is a sacrificial ruler with sad story that only wants his peoples to be happy. And doesnt even wants to fight you but he must take your soul to break barrier, and thats all falls apart after playing deltarune. asgore in deltarune seems like a good person because he doesnt have a reason not be. There no souls, he isnt supposed to save anyone, he isnt even a ruler he just sells flowers at his shop and lives his life. and even tho he got divorced with toriel he still doesnt seem bad from any side. After deltarune you would never think of him as person that could kill 6 humans. That was a long one, thanks if you read all that. In conclusion i want to say, play undertale and deltarune already if you for some reason havent yet.
I have played Undertale, but I don’t think I know enough to play Deltarune which is why I’m keeping it post poned. Do we have to finish every one of the endings in Undertale (Like genocide and pacifist yk) to get the story to Deltarune?
I don’t think so. I think having completed multiple endings gives you a rounded understanding, but at the very least a pacifist run I think should prep you pretty well for like the more meta nature of some of deltarune’s beats and themes
"Why you should play Undertale before Deltarune."

...Then Deltarune came along and made me love Susie more.
Oh cool we're in waterfall now!
Undertale changed me in a very positive way as I was able to extract many life lessons in it
"Toby Radiation Fox" - that's a new one.
I do like deltarune alot more than undertale playing undertale again recently cemented that feeling
Multiple times now I have accidentally opened this video only to be greeted by the most emphatic "Undertale" I've heard, followed by a thousand yard stare as I pause the video to watch later
It's a vibe
UNDERTALE 👁️👁️
*U N D E R T A L E*
Good you talk abaut this
Over a year late!
:(
I consumed enough undertale to have aborbed it into my system rather ghan needed to play it myself lol. But i am finally working though it now.
I didnt do that and somehow im just as into both games as... Idk a big fan. But i agree i probably should have done that 😅
DON'T DO IT JACOB HAHAAHA GGDFGH DFHDFF
I’ll always remember how I first got into Undertale - it’s when I used to watch Dan and Phil lol.
Very well put together video!
I just rewatched their playthrough the other day lol. It still holds up pretty good :D
Playing the first chapter of Deltarune before actually playing undertale: o=o
The Fandom is definitely something. I'd say stay away from Reddit and Twitter with a 10ft long pole. I feel like most youtubers who do theorys/analysis are more down to earth though.

COUGH😊
reddit is fine. twitter is mostly crazy though
Me realizing I should critically think post both games but I’m so bad at critically thinking even during games 😧
Me: Sees this title
Also me: Too late 😳
How can yoz not mention inverted fate?😢!!!!!
I actually haven’t read inverted fate! I started it but never got past the ruins. I plan to pick it up again eventually, though
@@browniefox7218 The Ruins (and to a much lesser Degree Snowdin) are pretty much the weakest parts of if Thanks to the low Tension and rare Battles!
Oh hey it's me I'm the guy that played Deltarune without playing Undertale! (I finally beat Undertale earlier this year)
Great video, agree with every point made
❤
Lore of Why You Should Play Undertale Before Deltarune momentum 100
What did Jacob do, did he just kill everyone?
9:26 spiting or faring
where can i find these fanfics? im particularly interested on this one 18:50 but i cant find it
The description of the video has the urls to all of the fanfics!
@@browniefox7218 thanks! i really like your videos btw
never played undertale or deltarune... Have I missed a lot?
I mean I think they’re both fun games, especially if you enjoy analyzing things and games that have kind of a meta commentary that go with them.
DELTARUNE IS FREE🗣🗣🗣🗣
So... What was the unexpected way Jacob played Deltarune?
For a video advising which game you should play first, it seems kind of stupid for more than a half of it to be in "spoiler territory"
Hard to make a case without it unfortunately
