First off, major compliments. Few are as tallented as you. Now, you need more clearance between the cab & the box. The frames flex, & the box will hit the cab on the corners. If you dont believe me, visegrip the box to the frame, & then just jack one corner of the frame way up. You will see exactly how much it flexes. Then consider with even more weight added, (tailgate, bed wood & slats, glass, window regulators, etc... etc). Case in point : I had a 1952 Buick Special 4 door sedan. I jacked it up using the bumper jack. The doors would not even close due to frame flex. Bottom line, if you give it more clearance, the bed will not hit the cab. If you leave it close, it most certainly will hit, messing up your paint & bodywork. Bed-to-cab clearance is not' a door gap. Its significantly larger, & needs' to be larger. Moving it back now "BEFORE" you mount & drill your fenders is 'critical'. Once you mount your fenders, you can not later move the bed. Your wheel-to-wheel-opening will be off by relocating the bed later. Save yourself the trouble. Increase the bed-to-cab gap now. Love your work Chad. Few are as good as you. Sincerely, David.
Plymouth did actually make the PT-50 pickup in 1937 & 38. (PT stood for "Plymouth Truck") Near identical to the '35 Chad is making. Based on the car front with a Dodge box. The box even has the same shaped stake pockets, fenders, etc. The average price to buy one today is $31,900. If interested in seeing how they compare, just look up '37 Plymouth PT50 pickup. Chad is doing a phenomenal job of reproducing this one. Really enjoying watching.
I did look up a PT-50. There is a nice piece in Hemmings, nice photos and a nice store that centered around a young man’s dream of owning the truck, set in Western NewYork’s state town of Naples. Truck is still over there.
No offense intended, but Chad is not "reproducing" anything. Nor does he ever. This is not a 37 or 38 "PT". It's a one-of-a-kind 1935 Plymouth pick-up. There is no other exactly like it. That is what Chad and Jolene are all about.
It's so fascinating to come from a carpentry background and watch you work metal. I used to say "It's all drywall, it just cuts different" (I started as a drywaller, then homebuilding, then doors, furniture, and cabinets.) Now I'm learning to weld and fabricate. Your channel is an excellent learning environment.
I totally get that I was an engineer for many years , then a methods engineer. Did a bit of truck driving , went back into engineering after heart surgery then when the company closed , I started working for Sunseeker as a deck fitter . Now retired I do a bit of wood working converting a van into a camper. When people ask me how I do it I say it’s just engineering with different materials.
@@glenn7085 Like Chad himself would say, "Take what you like, and throw the rest away" It's a bit like the differences in timber framing, you can math it all out and do it by the numbers, or you can "French" scribe everything. Personally, I can benefit from varying perspectives and techniques. I can see that he's not perfect, and I embrace it.
Chad you amaze me and probably many others ..this is going to be a really nice looking truck ..to the point that when people see it they will not know what year or what model of truck it is ...they might say it's a Ford, some might say Chevy some might even think Plymouth... It's really going to be a head turner... and a head scratcher ...I think Chad that this is best project for the 2022 season.GREAT JOB CHAD AND JOLENE'S CAMERA AND EDITING...I WISH YOU TOO ALL THE BEST FOR THE GREAT VIDEO S THIS YEAR...AND FOR NEXT YEAR...MAY YOU STAY HEALTHY AND RECIEVE ALL THE FAVERS BESTOWED YOU.THIS COMING YEAR ...THIS WE ENJOYED WATCHING THE GREAT BUILDS YOU HAVE created
This is really turning out to be a very nice build it looks like a factory built truck what is so special about it it is right out of your head no plans
Chad mentioned a few shows ago, that he was thinking about a sheet metal floor for the box. My vote is for a nicely stained wood floor with steel bars between the planks.
I heard Chad mention on today's show, that he's now thinking of possibly a wood floor. Anyway, whatever he chooses, it's his project, and I enjoy following with great interest.
Man it’s amazing to watch someone perform awesome work using mostly basic hand tools. I know you have some other high end like breaks, bead roller etc but you hardly ever go to them!!! Sometimes I scratch my head in the beginning as to where ur heading with a part of build, only to go, Wow did not see that coming!!!! Only issue I have watching you work, 😂 is your killing my back and knees working off the ground. I would, did build me a table to work off of. Y’all keep up the amazing work/vids!!!!!
Chad, I don’t LIKE what you’re doing…. I LOVE what you’re doing! I love how the truck is turning out! For me, this truck is the one I’d say is my favorite of all your creations I’ve watched you build so far! (I’ve been watching for about a year and have been a subscriber for most of that time! I admire your creativity and how you build to make YOURSELF happy! Awesome work my friend! Keep doin what you do!
I have been messing around welding on cars/trucks for 40 years. Thought I knew quite a lot. I learn something new from your videos every time I watch one! Keep doing what you are doing!
Would never think this was a 4 door. It is coming out super cool. This would be good to run to town with when ever you need to pick up things especially with your logo on the sides.
I actually did some resto work on a 38 PT 50 some years back. Belonged to my first grade teacher who wanted to drive it again. Bless her sole she has since passed, but got to drive it again. I think her son still has it. Love what you do, and how you do it.
A wooden floor made of 1 x 6 , then take some used motor oil and soak both sides of the wood down using a cloth will stain and protect the wood for years and doesn't cost much, just a thought. Love the build, it's looking awesome.
Hey Chad. I sure appreciate you & your show ! I'm a fellow Canadian living & working here in Saudi Arabia & you keep me sane & missing my old cars back home...Keep it up with the creatations of 1 of a kind. Cheers
It’s looking very nice coming on. Good perseverance of something in it. Good job. Thanks for another good episode. Appreciate it. Have a blessed night blessed day. God bless.
Looking awesome very well done including the great video work. I had in the past built a bed for a truck box similar to yours. Had welded angle iron tabs back to back on the square tubing and spaced it for securing a wood floor in the box. Way better than drilling through the square tubing.
I like what you have made this four door car out of. It would be cool to see a wooden floor on that pickup like the old pickups for that time. Hope to some of the progress being made on your guys garage can't wait to see it finished.
Great build so far make a great Hiltz Auto shop truck getting parts, or a spares truck transport for the racecar this is great to watch I am jealous good work keep it up.
You guys do a good job on building your cars I like watching your show keep on doing a good job keep on doing the hard work I appreciate you guys showing us how to do the right way not the wrong way thank you for being who you are don't change for nobody and I love the truck
You were talking about math, english and not concentrating on reading I believe I have the same issues from dyslexia. Couldn’t stay awake when I was young reading, everything was jumbled up, I would have reread it over and over. They didn’t diagnose that 65 years ago. I worked around it and had a very successful life but would have like to have known and not be ashamed of it at that time. It makes you smarter in other ways. Thanks for sharing that with me.
Tech tip...A trick I use to prevent grabbing the wrong piece of cut stock is to mark the cut-off line with a check mark. The angled tail of the check mark will indicate the piece you need. Works every time. Also the little tic mark will be there to remind you later if you forget which end you just cut.
As in carpentry. Weld a screw to headboard half inch under the one inch cross bar, take a claw hammer and pull the head board against one inch bar and weld it. Then cut screw off. And repeat in other areas along the bar.
Man this pickup is looking good Chad! Closest thing to stock I've seen you do, yet totally custom, very very cool. Kind of a Chip Foose vibe, but you're doing it on your own, all documented by Queen Jolene, haha!

G00GLE images shows lots of them. Plymouth made the PT50 till the war stopped all production in '42. They looked like Chad's for '37 & '38.

Sure does look like one . I think , given the steak pockets that is his plan .
The difference is that the PT 50 windshield stands straighter up than the Plymouth car did.

Hayduke there is nothing similar between wood and steel. The math always works with steel.

I am absolutely loving this build. In awe of the creativity, production work and vision. Great job Chad! Great video work Jolene!
I like the way Chad free handed all those cuts on the floor instead of using a bandsaw, and they come out square. Good eye, big time saver!
Thats awesome. Looks great, inspiring. Gives me what I need to get mine done. Thank you for sharing...from South Africa
Absolutely love this build. I think it would look great if you painted it with a dark metallic purple with black fenders.
Great execution on the bed of the truck, thanks for the content
Would never think this was a 4 door. It is coming out super cool. This would be good to run to town with when ever you need to pick up things especially with your logo on the sides.
Chad, fabrication is UNBELEIVABLE AWSOME WORK.!!!! 👍👍👍👍
