  • Where were you on that day? We should never forget how we came together at the cost of so may innocent people. I wish we could all feel that unity and patriotism without such a tragedy.

I was at college on a break and grabbing lunch with my mom. We live in South Africa but everyone was watching the news and there were very few dry eyes. We were all shocked and horrified. Y'alls pain became our pain that day. So many dead for no reason.

Thank you for commemorating 9/11. It was the most vivid memory of my childhood watching that gut wrenching tragedy unfold. Years later, on 9/11, we lost Americans in Benghazi. That sick feeling returned. October 7, 2023 was another day when everyone knows where they were when they learned about the atrocities.

I worked for a third party market research company at Disney’s Epcot center, I received a call to remove all my personnel from Disney Property immediately. We needed to leave all parks and hotels. NO other info. Ran to a break room and for the first and only few times in my life, speechless. I recall one of my subcontractors falling to his knees as I told him. His 2 sons worked at the Pentagon. His pain became my pain. All these years later I choose to remember our joy 6 hours later when he heard from BOTH his sons. SAFE! May we NEVER forget.

This comment and its reply brought instant tears to me! I was in a rush to get home that morning and I didn’t realize anything had happened. I was only 20 and my car radio was only broadcasting the news, so rather than listen, I switched it to CD and I drove for 3.5 hours, clueless. When I walked in the house, my mama yelled at me for making her worry because I didn’t stop and let her know I was safe. (I didn’t have a cell phone so I didn’t call her before I left) I still had no idea what was going on. Then she pointed at the TV.
      MY HEART SANK!
I immediately called my former boss, whom I knew was taking numerous employees to NYC. He said he’d seen it all happen from his hotel room, which was just a few miles away. Absolutely horrific! 💔

As a Canadian, I stand with you all. The world, as we knew it, has not been the same, since. I find it very sad that we, Canadians, need a passport to get in to the US, now. We were so closely united, we didn't one. How incredibly sad. It almost felt to me, I can't speak for my fellow Canadians, lost a sibling. I will NEVER forget where I was, that horrible morning, when one of my fellow workers said, "Look at the big picture. Welcome to world war 3, ladies and gentlemen". Those were his chilling, exact words. Only love can drive hate out. I pray for peace and unity.

I'm in the UK and I can still remember it clearly. I was off school ill and had slept in. I came down stairs once I woke up to get a drink and my mum had the news on and it was just as the second plane hit the second tower. I literally laid on the sofa all day just watching the news with my mum. My brothers and sister finished school and college early that day. We all just sat at home waiting for my dad to get home from work which took longer as all the offices were closing just as safety precautions. That and 7/7 in the uk are days i dont think i'll ever forget.

It was my 50th birthday. I hadn’t gotten my vehicle tabs so I went to get them. I found a note on a business next door to the Secretary of State. “Due to the country problems we have closed. I went to my vehicle and turned on the radio. The second tower was just hit! My better half was in Canada , our son was at community college and by the time I got home so was he. What should have been the best day of my life turned sour! 10 years later my great niece was born on my birthday, now that turned 9-11 into a wonderful day. I am blessed to wake up every day in a country that is free of war. May it always be that way!

I was in 8th grade American History class. Our teacher would always start class with us watching the news. We watched the second tower get hit, live. Right there, sitting at our desks. The principal called us all into the gym, by grades, and told us “an act of w*r has happened on our soil” and sent us all home. My parents were sitting on the couch, mom half ready for work and my stepdad still in his suit and tie. They were weeping (makes me cry typing that). I dropped my backpack next to their brief cases sitting by the door and just dove face first into them on the couch. We sat there most of the day crying and praying together.

Couldn’t believe it!! Shock and tears!!
It was strange for so long.. we live not too far from an airport and for days complete silence!! Not a single plane in the air!!
On the tv every day was coverage of the disaster…

I stayed in my apartment glued to the TV for like 3 days in pure shock. I was 21 years young and I thought war had come to America soil and I was so scared.

It was scary to think what might happen while I was out...I couldn't wait for my kids to come home after school/day care and hugged my boys tight knowing that there were people that wouldn't be able to hug theirs. I live in Canada...but this tragedy brought nations closer together.

We were at work but our internet at work was very limited, since we lived less than 2 miles away our boss sent us home to watch the news and check in with work to update them. Got home to my 11 year old son in tears because family and friends had been calling to check on my Mom who was visiting NH and was due to fly out of Boston on Friday, but nobody could remember when her flight was. I got everyone called back and calmed down and spent the night watching the news and packing clothes and getting the car ready, then drove 22 hours to get my Mom and bring her home, which was another 22 hour trip. It was a long stressful, emotionally exhausting week. But the number of cars, fire trucks, and other emergency vehicles that were headed northeast with American flags on their car antenna and USA signs in their windows was amazing.

I still had to go to work because being a CNA people needed me. I worked 2nd shift and took my children to work with me. Resident's at the nursing home where I worked was all torn up about what happened. My children colored and got them occupied on other things and they finally settled down. Was at work split shift at a small town convenient store. Heard it on the radio. Went in to town to be with a friend. Watched it play over and over on tv. Got back to work to a mile long line at our gas pumps. People put gas in anything they could. I had to go tell them they could not put it in 5 gal buckets or milk jugs. I was soo scared and my hart was heavy for the families of all those lost.

The fragility of the world changed that day and has never quite been the same. I was a 17yr old Australian who had just moved out of home and was unpacking boxes when it first came across the television quite late at night. I remember being glued to the t.v for hours in shock not believing this was actually happening and then when the second plane struck then the feelings turned to sadness and utter disbelief. As an Australian we cried and mourned with you. R.I.P to all the souls lost that day and wishing peace to the millions left behind that will never forget ❤️

I worked at IBM in Ireland. It happend at like lunch Time. Airport closed, and our building was at the decent to land there. 10k of international employees under circling airplains. We heard people lost their lives that we knew in those towers. We evacuated the building, asked public transportation to get us away from the building. As we worked for international teams we started to do recovery for companies that lost their office in the towers. We than got sent to other countries to do our work. It was after x-mas before we returned to "normal". It made us all very aware of what a crazy world we lived in.

I was on my way to work at Palm Springs airport. When I arrived, everyone was silent and watching the TVs. When flights were resumed, I was tasked with what TSA does now and screening passengers, patting them down, and screening through luggage. I was the first TSA with no real training. It was frightening

I was driving my children to school. And I heard it over the radio as my husband was calling me to tell me at the same time. I pulled over to answer him and I remember him asking if I heard the news and I was in shock. I told him I just heard on the radio. I asked how bad and he said it's bad. He told me he wouldn't be coming home from work for a while. I went a week without him.

The absolute waves of fear that washed over me wondering what world my daughter was going to be born into exactly one month later. Would we have boots on the ground war here on home turf? Where would my husband be and my father and 2 brothers? Turns out theyd all go over but wouldnt all return. I was almoat paralyzed with fear. The only thing making me move was preparation for possible disaster incoming and keeping my unborn child safem

I was teaching 5th grade and my children were in middle school across the river. The teacher from across the hall ran into my room and announced that the Trade Center had been bombed. All I could do was stay calm, keep my students calm, and wait till I could get home to my own kids. As soon as my planning period came around, I turned on the news and watched the second plane hit. My younger sister lives in southern New Jersey and my parents were living in Washington state at the time. Getting word from my sister wasn’t easy as phone lines were jammed. I also have family in upstate NY. It was so incredibly awful. Thankfully the local military base had been converted for civilian use. I kept telling my students there was nothing to worry about as we didn’t have an active base. I was so scared but couldn’t let my students see that. 🇺🇸. We didnt have cell phones at the time.

I was in college. I was walking back to my dorm room when a friend told me about it and I went to my dorm and turned my tv on and called my mom. Her and my dad were on there way back from the VA hospital in Fayetteville NC. I told her what happened and a plan hitting the pentagon. My uncle worked a few blocks from it. She told me that she would call me as soon as she heard from my uncle. He was fine. But I never prayed so hard for those affected.

I was 12yrs old sitting in class. We went into a lock down a friend was pulled from class and didn't come back(she had family working). They turned on the t.v. in our classroom and we watched it all. Our week came to a complete stop that day. I remember teachers coming and going from room to room talking in hushed tones.
We where all called to sit on the carpet and the teacher tried move on from the morning. But we just couldn't. We had come in from recess just before the lock down. I remember my dad meeting me at the bus stop something he's never done. My mom when she got home woke me up to just hug me.

I was 25 and working on the 11th floor of an office building in Northern Virginia. We heard it on the news and could see the smoke from the Pentagon from our floor. I drove home and there wes NO cars on the interstate. Extremely surreal. I met my boyfriend at his job, we bought a TV and went home and just sat there and watched the news coverage the rest of the night.

I was at home with my first daughter who was 6 months old and my friend called me and told me to turn on the TV. I turned it on in time to see the second plane hit the other tower. Then I watched in horror, when people started to jump to get away from the heat, then the towers fell, I was in tears and thought what kind of world did I bring my daughter into.

I was teaching. 32 years old. I taught preschool, self-contained classroom (am and pm 1/2 day program). The custodian walked passed and told me a plane hit one of the towers. I lived in NJ at that time. He then came back and said a second plane hit. We knew it was not a mistake by then. Coworkers were not okay, lots of folks had family members who commuted to Manhattan for work. By the time my pm class came, a few of them were aware of what happened and I had to talk with them. When I got off work to watch the news, dozens of stations were not available because some stations were broadcasted through NY and the towers. Family members couldn’t get in touch with us because phones were down. Eeriest thing was how quit the skies were afterwards. I lived close to an army base and naval base, so there was some fear from that.

I am from Germany. Due to the time difference, it was afternoon here. I was in the office and was just about to go home when the news came on the radio. We were restless because colleagues from our company were there to present a product. I took the bus and the subway home and when I got to my apartment, my husband shouted at me that the second tower had also been hit. The station's presenter from RTL, who had been a correspondent in New York for a long time, was presenting for 7 hours straight. New York was his city, you could see the horror on his face.
2 of our colleagues died there because they had postponed the meeting for a week.

It was my son’s first day of preschool in Arlington, VA. We stepped out the front door to the sounds of more sirens than I had ever heard before. Driving to preschool I could see smoke in the distance but couldn’t tell where it was from…it was the Pentagon. Locked down in the preschool because no one knew if more attacks were going to happen. Finally let us out and I had to drive back streets home because the main roads were all outbound as evacuation routes. My husband worked a block from the White House and walked home because he was afraid that there would be an attack on metro. Such a clear and beautiful day but it was eerie for days without the usual airplane traffic. I will never forget.

I was driving to work and it was on the radio. When I got to work we had 3 tvs on all day long. I work at a vet clinic and we had a bunch of people cancel their appointments. We actually had a coworker that was in New York on vacation, she watched it from the roof of a building. Everything was surreal, so crazy! September 11th is my niece’s birthday, she was 5 years old at the time. I remember dropping off her gift that night and going home to watch more news.
