  • The power side forward idea has often led to misunderstandings. I address two of these in this video.
Firstly is when to use the power side forward.
Secondly is to what extent you should blade.
Would love to hear from you. Keep it civil and focused on the content. Keyboards warriors get mocked or blocked.

If you're in a bladed stance you can move your right foot to the right which will open up your stance a bit while pushing off with your rear foot then you can throw your cross. You can also pivot your rear foot and twist your body with a rear cross.

If you're in the excessively bladed stance that many adopt and was used by Bruce in his movies, then it's way to slow to open up for the rear hand. That step is an extra move and a lot of extra distance that's needed to be covered. The rear leg needs to rotate as well, which means that your power isn't as great until you do. It's the sprinter stance. It's not efficient for a fight against an opponent who has skill and speed. If you can open up from that extreme bladed stance, then your opponent was never a challenge to you, which I think has been the case for a lot of the JKD people out there who adopt it. They are more into movie posing and less into improving their ability to overcome a skilled opponent.

@@evolutionJKD Yeah I agree an excessively bladed stance might trip you up also and its commonly known movie JKD differs from actual JKD Bruce taught. I myself place my rear foot a few inches out for stability while still protecting the groin and still having that mobility the bladed fencing stance gives you. I think Manny Pacquiao best exemplifies what you can do in a correct bladed JKD boxing stance. Its endless if you know how to move shift angle kicks punches everything. I know he's a huge Bruce Lee fan and I see he writes autograph right handed which my suggest he fight power side forward. If you Ytube ''Manny Pacquiao Still lightning quick at 45 SilverVoice TV'' you can see what I mean still has it. )

Manny had some training with Teri Tom who is certified under Ted Wong and Abe Santos Who is certified under Taky Kimura. You can see a lot of JKD elements in his fights including the straight lead with a vertical fist.

Is JKD just straight punches or do you use hooks and uppercuts too?

You should absolutely be working hooks and uppercuts as a JKD practitioner. Both are part of the arsenal that I got from Jerry Poteet. Take the direct line if possible, but if it's closed then you need to find another way to score a hit. All roads lead to straight blast, but not every road starts with straight blast.
There is a story that after Bruce's famous fight with Wong Jack-man, he commented later "If only I'd had a hook!" Wong Jack-man, a skilled martial artist, was able to close off and defend against the straight blast. If one door closes, another opens. You just need the tools.
