In 10th place we'd have Arsenal Pyramid but it got cancelled on Twitter for posting slurs. I originally praised it for having a cool change of aesthetic and some simple but enjoyable platforming sections with the gears inside the pyramid, while lamenting that more wasn't done with the concept. Now that it posted slurs on Twitter though, I just don't know how to look at it anymore.
Mania is honestly my favorite iteration of Green Hills. I absolutely loved how the developers made Act 2 dramatically different enough to feel fresh again. Oddly enough, Frontiers 1-1 would be high on my list given the much more serious tone making it clear it wasn't going to be your usual journey.
i highly agree with the thing about frontiers, entering 1-1 initially had me groaning in dismay at another green hill level, but the music was so intense and honestly kinda scary to the point where that was what i focused on more than the actual aesthetic of the stage
26:47 I felt the opposite sentiment. I thought the gameplay really hindered the exploration factor of the SA2 levels. Going for the red rings felt awkward due to the lack of camera control and poor turning making turning around to jump on a platform behind me lead to my death half the time.
Cyber Space 4-5 i believe takes *elements* from Cool Edge Act 4 in terms of the main gimmick but its moreso elements, for the most part it's original Also I agree on the SA2 level design complimenting the Frontiers physics! I wish we got more SA2 level design than Unleashed or Generations honestly, because they were levels that were never experienced with boost in their original level design We ended up getting City Escape, Metal Harbor, Sky Rail, Green Forest, and Radical Highway but I would've killed to see Final Rush or White Jungle at the very least I think it's pretty clear the only reason SEGA chose Unleashed, Generations and SA2 level design for Cyber Space is because they're fully aware those 3 games are mostly praised for their level design alone
This Green Hill Cyberspace level that's only drift is not from Skyscraper Scamper, is from Savannah Citadel. There is an option stage that you only have to drift until the end. It's basically the same thing.
Honestly, if the physics weren't so bad, Heroes would go from my bottom 3, to my top 3 easily. The stage design, music, etc. are amazing in Heroes, but the "death by physics" aspect kills it for me.
The way SEGA is treating Green Hill these days always reminds me of that one line in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy about bypasses... Why build a Green Hill stage? "Well, it's a Green Hill stage. You've got to build Green Hill stages."
was waiting the whole time for him to mention sonic battle's green hill, i honestly loved it when i first discovered it was a good tribute for it back when seeing green hill wasn't an eyesore

What about the fighting games?! Sonic Battle had a version of Green Hill Zone. Sonic the Fighters had a South Island stage which aesthetically only represented green hill zone. Not to mention the Green Hill Zone stage in Smash Bros. Brawl, ultimate and 3DS.
You, uh, forgot the Green Hill from Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, which is played in the Hole-In-One Curling mode and for some reason the music is an actually good version of Splash Hill. Still, this is a pretty good list regardless.
Sonic Forces Speed Battle is basically an online racing game, not an endless runner. There's multiple tracks with the aesthetic of Green Hill from Forces, as well as other locations, and each one offers a different challenge to run through.
I didn't like cyber space until I started to speedrun the levels- trying to get them all under 1 minute with the homing boost cancel is insanely addicting and has taken me from "meh" on cyber space to "holy cow I gotta get back to it"
It's interesting that you picked green hill 3D from generations. It's an awesome fun stage with even more awesome music but it's very easy and to me feels very much like a tutorial level, which it effectively is as it teaches you the 3d mechanics. But hey good game. Agree on green hill from Mania. Next video idea: rank all the different musical versions of the green hill theme music! Again I think it's going to come down to Mania, Generations, and Sonic 1..
Another new thing that mania green hill zone has is corkscrews, the Original never had them, the first time they appeared was in emerald hill in sonic 2, it really helps to make act 1 in mania a bit more unique.
How could you forget Sunset Hill from Sonic Advance 3! Nitpicks aside very fair ranking video and god knows how many more green hills we're gonna have in the future.
You forgot Green Hill Zone from Genesis GBA. It deserves recognition as one of the worst versions of the stage. Maybe it's the same level design with terrible screen crunch and wonky physics, but that alone helps it stand out more than some of these versions. Just not in a good way.
24:22 while it's not exactly a 1 to 1 copy, or even close to a copy tbh, this level in particular seems to take inspiration from cool edge act 4 (sonic unleashed HD) as for the level that's entirely based on the drift, its actually based on savannah citadel act 2 with some alterations.
since you mentioned green hillS from the sonic movie, why didn’t you mention green hills zone from one of those 8-bit games Let’s not forget mecha green hill too (it contains the magical words “green” and “hill”)
24:53 This looks very reminiscent of some old Sonic dash levels. I'm sure there were several different iterations of it throughout the updates. I've not played it since lost world came out though so don't hold me to that. From what I remember, every so often there was a super ramp where you got big air and had to choose one of 3 paths to land on (while in the air you could do tricks to help fill your boost gauge). The zone was mostly a straight line with the occasional loops and jumps but it was mostly about side -stepping, jumping, and sliding. It also had occasional boss fights.
3-2 Cyberspace is annoying as it feels like controlling Sonic on ice but worse. It is is easier to S rank the stage by deliberately jumping over the drift panels. I love Sonic Frontiers, except for that stage. You know that it was an experimental lecel that they never fleshed out and maybe even forgot about.
How did I know sonic chronicles ghz would be last XD I think it's a fun enough area to run through in the game and has some nice backtracking and it's nice to start off with something familiar in Chronicles.
Haven't even started it yet... but the fact that this video is 30 minutes long really shows either how long a video this is or how many green hills there are...
24:21 - 25:00 I think it might be an original layout, despite a majority of the levels pulling from other games, there ARE some Cyberspace levels that are wholly unique in Frontiers. Looking into it, these are the original levels for Frontiers: - 1-3 - 2-3 - 4-3 - 4-4 - 4-5 (There you go) - 4-7 - 4-8 Also personally, I wouldn't mind a Green Hill return if they can map out all the "canon/realistic" versions of the paths in an open zone layout, sort of take how SA2 did it, make it not as blocky in it's layout, use Generations' more curvy nature, and there ya go. I'd say we'd have peak 3D (modern/recent) Green Hill. But if Green Hill DOES return any, it needs to be kept to one section of the game, be like a small fraction of it, not 1/3rd or more.
Pretty sure 4-2 is original. The skateboarding parts of 4-9 seem to take inspiration from City Escape, though, but everything else in the level is original.
yeah my biggest gripe with the CyberSpaces is that they removed the SetPiece while keeping the gameplay section, that & them picking the more Boost section while the gameplay formula is clearly geared towards the SA2 mentality of "Fast is a reward for a consistent pace"
While I generally agree with the order of things, there are two points of contention I have with the list: 1. Cyberspace levels. Several of those are just recreations of previous levels in the series, at which point can we _really_ call it a Green Hill if someone just painted those assets over existing architecture? 2. Classic levels. In my mind, a Zone is a World consisting of up to three Acts, which are Levels. Lumping them together simply because they play the same doesn't really make sense when Generations guarantees you're going to split worlds up anyway. Bonus Thought: Lego Dimensions is an odd candidate, since unlike every other level (put your hand down Chronicles, yours is just a setting and not a level at all), the "main point" is NOT to get to the end. Instead, because it's a Lego game, the importance is in finding all the things. Completely different considerations. Of course, it's also only PART of a level, so...
I think I would love a video looking at the amount every level that occurs more than once appears and which one overall has appeared the least overall, and look at the possible candidates that honestly need some love instead of repeatedly beating the charm that some levels had the first few times like a dead horse hoping it'd get up and run again. But yeah I need my baby marble zone ;w; I just want in 3D and remixed once lmao
Interesting #1. Not bad at all or anything, I really like it. Mania was the "easy" choice for top spot, since it's so beloved by so many, but that would've been a bit boring.
22:57 this doesn't count. I mean I've heard it's somewhat official but I think it's still not developed by sega themselves and you if it does count then you might as well throw in any green hills from official sonic flash games
They seriously need to bring a different Classic Stage back in games or use none at all because we need variety again, make things feel fresh and original.
I won’t say it was the Most Amazing, but I feel like Mecha Green Hill from Sonic Chaos should be included. It was Similar to Oil Ocean in spots but still had the Green Hill Aesthetic but more mechanical.
I would count sunset hill from Sonic. Advanced 3 AND Neo Green Hill from Sonic advanced. Very different stages in layout but they are Green Hill and the green hill theme does play in sunset Hill.
In 10th place we'd have Arsenal Pyramid but it got cancelled on Twitter for posting slurs.

3-5 in Frontiers is based on Savanna Citadel Act 2 Day from Sonic Unleashed
It's interesting that you picked green hill 3D from generations. It's an awesome fun stage with even more awesome music but it's very easy and to me feels very much like a tutorial level, which it effectively is as it teaches you the 3d mechanics. But hey good game. Agree on green hill from Mania.
