      Don't be afraid of criticism, even at an early stage in your journey. The sooner you get a pro set of ears on your productions, you can figure out where you need to improve and stop any mistakes you're making. My best advice, is to find an engineer who's mixes you like and have them sit down with you and your session (preferably locally). It might cost you a couple hundred bucks, but it is totally worth it. Be sure to record audio/video of the conversation/breakdown on a phone to refer to later on.

    Jordan, thank you so much for checking out my mix! It's awesome as hell for me to see a professional break all this down in front of me. I agree with your points; things are definitely a bit too slammed and I'm gonna go back and give things some breathing room before this song & the rest of the EP drops. Again thank you for everything man! ❤

    Thanks for reviewing my mix, Jordan! Seriously, I appreciate it. I sent you one that I hadn’t touched in almost a year. I think having your perspective on it helps a lot. That and I think now that I’ve had *way* more reps mixing, I should be able to revisit it and make it sound way better. Cheers

    Hi Jordan - I am constantly amazed at how sensitive you are to minor EQ moves. You've really helped me start focusing more on how I EQ and listening much closer to every track and doing the best I can to clean them up. Thanks for the great example you set!

  • @robnagelhoutmusic
    @robnagelhoutmusic 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    my mixes got way better once I got less timid with my processing moves. It's so interesting to see this be a common issue with mixers. I used to apply processing by gently introducing compression, eq, etc. but now I do the opposite and apply aggressively first and then dial it back and I've had a much easier time finding the sweet spot this way. I've noticed that the sweet spot is often much more aggressive than I may have expected.

    I really enjoy these videos! I wish you had the individual tracks so we could see/hear your moves on the specific items you address so that the rest of the mix isn't changed when you make moves. Like when you feel the snare needs more 8k, but by boosting that it changes everything vs just changing the snare, etc.
    Anyways please keep'em coming! I feel like I learn something every time!

    Lately I've been using a 'reference mix' with fantastic results. I loaded the entirety of Zep IV into my waveform, and just unmute it every couple minutes to reference - I'm not trying to recreate Zep IV, just trying to aspire to Zep IVs mix in terms of eq, comp, presence etc... because I do everything myself, it takes me out of the downward spiral mixing bubble and brings my mix back to a 'radio reality' that has 'playable uniformity' mixed in throughout the process, instead of just in hindsight after 10 low pass filters and 5:1 comp "sounds cool" lol

    i never care if an instrument sounds natural. i just want it to sound natural exciting. the super processed samples sound great. so heavy! i love those distorted moments when they hit. intentionally distorting the dynamics control is such an intense sound. why struggle with maintaining a natural sound when you can make it sound that heavy! i assure you the mix itself is loud as shit, or the master bus processing wouldn't have taken it to this level. (i agree about the vocal low mids tho. doesn't sound so bad when shit is happening but in that break it's really obvious.)

    18:30 they did the Fit For A King "Hell We Create" thing lol I love that thing.
    Great tracks overall my dudes! I do think that song literally benefitted from the 200hz cut overall, not just on vocals but everything. Was really impressed by how much that one move, as well as the mid boost, made a HUGE difference.

  • @MichaelSheaAudio
    @MichaelSheaAudio 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Song 1: With those tweaks, that mix is sick. I like the aggression of the song, I'd be into hearing more.
    Song 2: The drums have no ambience, so the room is probably too low or nonexistent, there's not enough compression on most things, and it sounds like the distorted guitars don't have a speaker, like they were just recorded straight out of the amp or a pedal. Definitely not a good sound. The song is interesting though, the sax is a cool addition.
    Song 3: Really good mix, everything sounds tight. Without a reference, it sounds fine the way it was, but perhaps in context, the extra EQ moves might be necessary.
    Song 4: Nailed the modern metalcore sound, sounds huge. The problem is that the song and mix sounds exactly like every other band in the genre.
    Song 5: Watch out for those low mids on the kick. Compressors, distortions, and clippers HATE those resonances and will blow out your kick. Just grab an EQ band and boost it around 100hz, sweep around a bit and you'll hear it. Good song though, feelsgoodman.
    Song 6: Definitely too dark, but that's an easy fix. Skate punk gets a thumbs up from me!
    Song 7: Jordan pretty much summed it up, the mix is kinda muddy and the drums are too much. Velocities are your friend. Setting the right velocities can be time consuming, but it can really bring your robotic drums to life. Overall the song and mix are good!
    Song 8: I like the song, but I don't love the way it sounds. There are just things about the way it's mixed that I personally don't like. The vocals are a bit too spoken as well. I don't have the strongest voice either, so who am I to talk, but I think you could push a little more and sound really good. The vocal performance is just lacking a bit of personality, that's all. :)
    Everyone here is on the right track and Jordan gave great advice!

    I like to think of 1k on a vocal as 'intelligibility". If you can't tell what the singer is saying, boost wide here. If It's sitting on top of everything and not gelling, reduce some 1k.

  • @DaftFader
    @DaftFader 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Mixer no 2 probably need better monitors or better room treatment if I had to guess. Everything was eq'd brittle and bright like there's an overbearing amount of low end modes in his listening environment. Also, it's a lot better when the main section drops in, so I'm assuming they didn't automate anything ... and had the same compression for the quiet parts as they did the loud. You 100% need to automate your compression if you have *THAT* big of a dynamic shift in a song.

    I really liked the first song that was critiqued, but casually listening felt like the vocals might have been a little too low in the mix. Is it just me or are they a little low? I ask because I often find myself having very forward vocals in mixes to make sure the vocalist can be heard and don't know if I'm developing a bad listening habit. All in all a cool song!

With almost everything aspect of this song, I have no idea what I'm doing, including songwriting, recording, mixing, mastering, publishing, trying to reach audiences, social media. Depends on the music, in my opinion. Hearing a live band, you get the energy from sheer sound preassure. To achieve this energy in a recording, you need to compress. Hard.

    Couldn't agree with you more about the fake-sounding metal bands trend. I've almost completely stopped listening to metal because everyone sounds like this these days. The same drum samples, the same amp models, all sorts of homogenous mixing/production choices which serve only to make hundreds of bands sound alike.

  • @skirmantasstankevicius458

    Nice contradiction. 'I like how it's raw, i like rawness, but... put samples to make it even'. Ok, so raw is what we define natural. We are naturals. Imperfects. So we do play inconsistently that actually gives character, so... Huh? So you like it raw, or you like it prestine, perfected. I bet you are not really big fan of 70s rock music, huh? ;)

    0:32 the first impression is that this is real garbage, but not the music :-) You should say that and move the first song to trash bin

    3rd song was the best in terms of mixing, 4rth song was the worst to my ears. If I hear that amount of distortion due to hunt for loudness i instantly change song. The moment you are so thirsty to sound loud is the moment you failed as an audio engineer in my opinion.
