    I think what people should take away from this, that most songs sound amateur because of simple balancing mistakes like getting the levels right, tonal balance etc. That can easily be fixed with any kind of stock plugins. But people are just focused on getting the best and expensive gear instead of just trying to get the basics right.

    • @user-yk4gd1fl4z
      @user-yk4gd1fl4z 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      or just writing really generic sounding music, which makes whatever mix fixes kinda moot.

      Or maybe they just don't know what it should sound like, so they're not sure what to adjust. 🤷‍♂️

    To the person who mixed the final song that was reviewed:
    A huge tip if you like big reverbs on vocals but want to maintain clarity is to use a technique that is widely used in the pop-industry. Basically what you do is create a send track that has the reverb on it, put an EQ to filter out the mudiness and then a gate at the end. Send it to your vocal tracks and then side-chain the gate to your lead vocal tracks so it essentially almost eliminates all of the reverb while the vocal is being played, and you only really get the tail of the reverb shining throug between each word/sentence. It sounds awesome and it keeps the vocal clear and up front while maintaining all that reverby goodness.
    If you ever see this, try it out! I promise it'll do wonders for you. :)
    Feel free to reach out to me if you want a more in-depth explanation of how to set this up.

      Totally agree. Nothing wrong with a big verb, but you do need to tame it a little bit.

    • @jaconova
      @jaconova 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That's a cool trick and probably best advice for people seeking that modern vocal sound. I really didn't find anything particularly wrong with these vocals, except the fact that they are not indeed the typical metal/rock modern sound. In fact, I like them with such long dark reverb.

    • @mathiasfaltskog5940
      @mathiasfaltskog5940 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jaconova Yeah everything is definitely up to personal preference. :) I also enjoy big reverbs on vocals but it definitely depends on the song and what section of the song. (for me at least)
      Hopefully you can make use of this trick on another mix in the future anyway. It's definitely a cool one in my opinion.

    • @ANonymoususer1006

      We can also use a side chain compression I instead of a gate.

    My buddy has a big studio with a huge ssl console and the reverb seems to be the thing the bands in the alternative rock world wants. It was strange to me at first but now I'm kinda use to hearing with these new bands he's been recording.

  • @00idc-idk00
    @00idc-idk00 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    This is like sorcery to me... I don't get how you can hear what's wrong and what needs to change - Probably because you're a professional with a lot of experience and training. (and I'm still an amateur after all these years) I can't believe how much you can tweak the sound by just EQ. The band I'm in, it's usually the most dedicated guy that mixes and everyone else is kind of reliefed that he wants to do it, but it never sound professional. You make me curious and interested about sound - maybe even enough to actually start learning LOL.
    We should probably let a professional do our mixing/mastering I guess...
    You sir are an inspiration! Thank you! Cheers from Sweden!

    • @pro_influence
      @pro_influence 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, very well said at the last point, professionals should do the mix because not all producers or recording engineers are meant to mix and master.

    • @jaconova
      @jaconova 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a matter of judgment and confidence, which comes with experience and lots of A/B-comparison to reference tracks. Don't take this as set in stone instructions but general guidelines: seek and understand stuff like muddyness, energry, cleanness, clarity, mid-side, etc. This is also why people pay extra and hire an engineeer to do mastering: as you can see in this video there are many ways to polish a track even in you are working on the consolidated final wave file and a set of fresh neutral ears is generally always welcome.

    • @joshuadelaughter
      @joshuadelaughter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At the very least, you can learn how to get great recordings, then you can just send it off to a professional to mix and master.

      I really like that song. I think I'd have used an acoustic for the rhythm. I'd drop the lead vocal reverb and add very short non feedback echo instead. My rule for reverb is get it to where it sounds right, then back it off a little. My rule for reverb is get it to where it sounds right, then back it off a little. You want it there, but not in your face. Backing vocals sound good. Is there a piano in there? If so, try panning it to one side, then the rhythm guitar on the opposite side (9/3).

    • @theCarouselPainter
      @theCarouselPainter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RedbeardMaximus i'm gonna be honest, i do solo projects aswell and drums are my main instrument, used to cranck up that snare and kick very loud back then, had to teach myself to hold back and let some of that wall of guitar get more in the front and let my mix breath with lots of parallele compression, so yeah it doesn't sound like a bulldozer anymore, but it's way more lively and balanced that way !

  • @pro_influence
    @pro_influence 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think most upcoming mixers are doing their bests but what I think it mostly being the problem in some mix is the Studio Monitor, You can't over power what Your Speakers are projecting or translating sometimes.

    • @DarkMoonFox123
      @DarkMoonFox123 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It makes sense, but also, if i can clearly tell the difference between one and other, so what the speaker have to do with it? Yk? Cause like, we get used to what we listen to music on, so you already know what a good mix should sound like on your speaker

    • @LucidLiquidity
      @LucidLiquidity 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@DarkMoonFox123Because when you crank *any* speakers, the increase in volume colors the sound differently, and naturally you are going to mix around that and potentially under or overcompensate certain frequencies. It has more to do with the volume than it does the speakers themselves.
      This is why it helps to listen back thru multiple types of speakers and various volumes to make sure it’s as balanced as possible across all mediums.

    • @MariJu1ce
      @MariJu1ce 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@DarkMoonFox123 Yes, you are very correct on other side.

    • @pro_influence
      @pro_influence 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LucidLiquidity hmm 🤔 that's another good point, but in this case of speaker volume levels, the coloration through the increase of the Speaker mostly comes through the Room Acoustic, because when crank the speaker volume it punches out the room ambience or reflection that was hidden in the and of not that then it's probably the Speakers are getting damaged, that's when the coloration mostly happened.
      Another point is if you mix at a very low volume level you seems not to hear low end enough and the highs seems to come out than the lows, but in that case you can be deceived by what you hear.

      String gauge and even size of frets/scalloped not scalloped fretboard are also factors to consider. This bit didn't sound particularly/critically out of tune to me though and I have perfect pitch (hint: I don't believe in perfect pitch actually, I think it's a myth, lol).
