I love these mix review videos. I'm learning a lot from them. Some of the trouble areas I caught right away - some sounded fine to me until you made the eq cuts and improved it. Still dialing my ears in to these subtleties.

Thanks mate! It’s good to train our ears to hear frequency ranges so we can identify problems quicker. But like you said, sometimes things can sound fine as they are, but perhaps there is still room to enhance them even further!

Thanks Rhys, you on the mark with the issues with the track my second song I recorded, I think I went a bit crazy on reverb on vocals, I hope to find the magic sauce in future mixes! PS - yes will be re-recording the song and those ekit tracks in the new year! Again thanks mate!

Hey Rhys, thank you for reviewing my mix. "Sick Track 1" is actually my track and you have made a very good point and demonstration of it. On the cymbals, it had a 1176 compressor on it causing saturation as they're known for it (I dunno why I even did that lol.) The drums are MIDI and there is kick and snare trigger without the velocities variating. Quick question on the kick, would you suggest gating it before mix plug-ins and then gating it at the end to remove sustain? (e.g. background hiss, etc)

I typically set the sustain/release time in the midi/trigger and then if it needs more I’ll gate it in the chain. Usually I gate fairly early on. The track is sick, any vocals going in it?
@@spinlightstudios Sweet, and thanks man! There's no vocals on it. However, it is a reproduction, remix and master out of the track "Snakes" by Hounds (the band I played in) that I wanted to make it sound better - we had someone else mix it years ago and it sounded monotonous let alone a track.

Your comments and review were very helpful. The mono hard-panned drums idea was a fun experiment...but I think i'll stick to a separate kick mic from now on for most things. Also the tilt EQ was a great idea. And the de-esser. I appreciate your time on this. Cheers man 🤘

sounds cool ! do you use some effects pedals or outboard gear on say your vocals?
Thank you! Going in the vocals went through a tube preamp. Same for acoustic guitar and the drums. No other outboard was used, although I did use decapitator on the vocals. @@chinmeysway
