Karl Urban, who played Doctor McCoy was so good at the role that Leonard Nimoy, playing original Spock, was moved to tears at the thought of his old friend DeForest Kelley, the original Doctor McCoy, who had passed away in 1999
Urban was freaking channeling Kelley I swear. It was uncanny how perfect he was for that. Even Pine's "Bones!" when entering the bridge at the end was perfection. They did a damn fine job casting this.

Whoever told you that Star Trek is a "less good version of Star Wars" has clearly never watched Star Trek as the two series' really arent anything alike. Id also argue that the Trek movies are generally more well liked than Star Wars is these days, even though they are also hit and miss in some respects. There are certainly more good Star Trek movies than there are good Star Wars movies, thats for sure.
Yeah, really nothing alike except there are aliens and occasional ray gun fights. The Abramsverse is closest to Star Wars and even then, no.

Anton Yelchin's death is still one of the saddest deaths I've seen. I really wanted to see him in more movies and where his career would take him. One of my favorite roles by him
He was so young, he could have had at least 20 more years on his career. It was very tragic.

The emotions felt by Vulcans are so strong that they are self-destructive, so Vulcans have developed a means of suppressing them and devoting themselves to logic. Nevertheless it’s made clear in TNG that Sarek(Spock’s father) loves Spock’s mother incredibly deeply.
That episode of TNG is actually fantastic, one of my personal favorites.
Yeah. Nowadays Vulcans are the logical scientist types. Less well known is that they first went through a nuclear war, and then a whole Mad Max phase with psionic warlords. There's a *reason* they take their repression seriously.

It's worth noting that Vulcans are significantly physically stronger than humans. Even as a half-Vulcan, Spock has an immense advantage over Kirk in a fist fight
Especially during Pon Farr.
So do Romulans - they're extremely close relatives of Vulcans, and it's arguable if they're even different species. There's a REASON Kirk keeps catching a clobbering in this movie.
Noted by Hoshi in ENT, Vulcans are capable of about 3x the strength of a comparatively built human.

@@ianburns1167 Romulans are indeed an offshoot of Vulcans. They're essentially Vulcans that reject logic and embrace emotion. In the canon they split off from Vulcan and founded their own culture about 2000 years before the events of Star Trek.
It’s truly horrific what happened to the kid that played Chekov, he was brilliant. The casting for these alternate timeline movies was spot on excellent.
Nichelle Nicols, the actress who played the original Uhura in the 1960's Star Trek television series, just passed away a week ago. As an African American playing a main cast member on a television program in the 60s who was a military officer and not a slave, maid, or cheesy villain, she was a pioneer that inspired the many African Americans that would follow her footsteps into television and movies. She was admired by Martin Luther King Jr., who held her up as a role model to the black community, and a direct inspiration to Whoopi Goldberg, who would go into acting and even play a recurring role on the 80s & 90's Star Trek: The Next Generation television series. Ms. Nichols will be deeply missed.

She was going to actually quit Star Trek and MLK Jr talked her out of it. She also shared the first ever onscreen interracial kiss with William Shatner. She was a groundbreaker in many ways.
Just so you know, this was actually the eleventh film. And this is not meant to be comparable to Star Wars. As many have stated, you are going to be forever lost without having seen the original series, but also, this film was meant to be a reboot to begin with, thus the "alternate timeline" story established with the loss of the USS Kelvin and George Kirk's death.
From there, the "Kelvin Timeline" (Star Trek 2009, Into Darkness, and Beyond) was born, and thus everything became fair game.

I think, in this day, TOS requires a unique taste for science fiction. I think the original movies are sufficient to get someone up to speed. Just grit your teeth through the first movie, and you'll be fine. 😁

This was Chris Hemsworth's first American film released. He filmed two other movies before this, "Cabin in the Woods" and "Red Dawn", but both films were shelved until after this one was released.
Cabin is one of my all-time favorite flicks.
When I first saw this movie . I didn’t know who Chris Hemsworth was. As you said this was his first American film . But when I saw him I literally said : “This guys a star” .
Star Trek (2009) was Chris Hemsworth’s first movie. Prior to that, he was a tv actor in Australia. No one knew who he was. That’s why he doesn’t make the main credits list. He did, however, elevate to perfection, the first 10 minutes of the movie. 10 minutes of some of the best cinema ever made.
Also, in-case you hadn't heard, Nichelle Nichols who played Nyota Uhura in the original Star Trek series passed away about a week and a half ago. She was a legend, worked with Nasa to recruit astronauts, and was convinced to stay on the show by Martin Luther King Jr after experiencing racism from people associated with the studio.
Oh wow I didn't know all of that. Rest in peace Nichelle Nichols
RIP I saw that on the news. She was also a great activist, pushing for more African Americans to get roles in TV.
We've lost a few Star Trek alumni within the last month. Nichelle; David Warner, who played Ambassador St. John Talbot in Star Trek V, Chancellor Gorkon in Star Trek VI, and Gul Madred in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Chain of Command" part 1 and 2; and Paul Sorvino who played Worf's step brother Nikolai Rozhenko in the episode "Homeward."
She was leaving as she had been offered a starring role in a Broadway production. She also states that she didn't experience racism from the crew, but from others associated with the studio.

There is SO MUCH in this film to tie it to the previous universe - easter eggs for nerds - but I love that the story still stands on its own and I'm glad you liked it.
The casting in this flick is genius.
Every character was played to the quirks of the original characters but with their own take on it.
ehh chris pine is forgettable and easily the most replaceable
I cant but note that people only feel that way because so many of them blew up after this film and are now considers superstars. Karl Urban was the only one of them who already had a great carreer before this one.

It was very surreal to see someone reacting to this movie who didn't know even the characters from "Star Trek" before watching it. I can hardly imagine even being able to understand it without knowing the immense amount of backstory. But I was glad to see you proving it's possible after all!

I'd at least seen several episodes of the original series even if I hadn't seen any of the older movies. Even then I thought the film wouldn't have been as great if I didn't know the original characters beforehand

1:07 Yeah… “Passed away” is one way to put it. His car’s parking break failed and it rolled down his driveway, hit him, and rolled on top of him. He died slowly, a few yards from his front door, unable to call for help to his neighbors. Only 27… such a tragic loss of a promising young actor.
"HI Christopher, I'm Nero." I always loved how formal he was in their first interaction, especially after completely wiping out the entire fleet of starfleet.

“Bones” or Leonard McCoy is played by the same actor who played “Billy Butcher”, Karl Urban.
Edit: Montgomery Scott or "Scotty" is played by Simon Pegg who also played a character in The Boys, which is Hughie's Dad.
Karl Urban also played Eomer in Lord of the Rings.

These newer movies are good but the context is so much better if you watch the original movies. The originals definitely show their age in some ways but the story telling is great. And Star Trek 2 the Wrath of Khan is really good

Star Wars was influenced by a lot of things including old WWII fighter pilot videos. Lucas took everything he loved as a kid and mashed it together to create Star Wars.

And without the success of a new hope then Trek never would have made it to the big screen and wouldn't have been revitalized in the Golden Age. While the new Star Trek trilogy does stand on its own feet, it is much better if you've seen the show. Regardless, great video and live long and prosper.
Vulcans and Romulans are cousins, both VERY warlike and emotional. Vulcans use logic to control their emotion. Vulcans actually rage on the inside, and in a few episodes show that.
When Abrams did this movie, Star Trek had been around for 40 years, but was in need of a reboot. So when writing this, he wanted something that would appeal to both long time fans, and people who had never seen Star Trek before.
How I know Karl Urban is a great actor is that he can play both Bones and Billy Butcher so convincingly
And Eomer is a completely different character from either and he nailed that too.
By the by, older Spock IS actually Spock. The original Spock. The legend Leonard Nimoy

No one will take Spock away from Leonard Nimoy. Even the new Spock’s agree.
There's some measure of controversy within fandom on these movies because of the legacy, but honestly they're all fabulous inclusions to the sandbox, and the actors who stepped into the roles fit the characters so well it was unprecedented.
- I was a die hard no budging original Star Trek fan, and rebelled and resisted the new movies, but I'll be honest, the new actor reprising the role of Spock was pretty much perfect, Kirk is pretty good, Bones is awesome, Chechov and Uhura were also well done, I will admit though that I rather didn't get as good of a feel from the Scotty character. The actor is a great actor, I just don't know if he captured the role of Scotty as well as the others did.

The casting was very good. It's with some aspects of the writing I take issue to this day.

That “old Spock” is the late-great Leonard Nimoy, who first played Spock and has been a fan favorite for decades. The hand signal he brought to the show borrowing from a childhood experience that’s interesting.
I know I'm only repeating what others are saying, but you really should watch the original STAR TREK stuff. If you can, watch the episode "Space Seed" from the 1960's show and then watch the WRATH OF KHAN movie right after. They make a great double-feature.

As a geek who had swam in an ocean of Star Trek since the early 70s, its funny to see someone totally unfamiliar with Star Trek as a whole. If you have time, watch a few of the Original Series episodes this whole universe is based on. For a show made in the 1960s, it still stands up pretty good today.
I hope you get the chance to go back and watch some of the original movies to see the original cast. Think you'd love them, especially original spock who you saw as "older" spock in this. Rest in Piece Lenard Nimoy 😭

at the time, Hemsworth was unknown outside of Aus so he was just a great casting choice for Chris Pine's dad for the opening.
These remakes are pretty engaging, but without the actual Star Trek background, some concepts may be lost. Especially in the sequel. I would highly recommend going back to the original William Shatner films, 1-4, before continuing with the J.J. Abramms series.
But, great films over all. Also, never make a shot game where you drink whenever a Red shirt (ensign) dies.
Watch the original series episode "The Menagerie". This was the 1st pilot with Chris Pike as Captain. It was retold as an episode with Kirk. This should catch you up quickly.

I saw the original Star Trek when it first came out on TV, back in '66. This newer version as far as in writing takes time to bring more action, better comic relief, and a better musical score than the original (Except Star Trek theme). Also the old man who played old Spock - He played Spock in the original Star Trek. I guess only an older Trekkie would know this.
Any Trekkie would know that, there was a time when anyone in the TV owning world would have known who Spock was. Nowadays only a Trek fan would know.
The score to this film is amazing and one of the best movie soundtracks of the 2000's imo.

if you liked this movie - now go back and watch "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock," and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" which has time travel in it.
Most of the Star Trek films don’t highlight the key distinction between the Franchises. Star Trek is about exploring and the unknown. It’s about the potential of humanity.
It's really hard to appreciate the newer Star Trek films without the context of the previous series and films beginning in the 60's.
Kudos to the producers for attempting to create a film for Star Trek afficionados and newbies.

Actually, Spock wouldn't feel any guilt because he would have logically reasoned that the fault of the destruction of Vulcan rests entirely on Nero; even the vengeance that Nero sought on Elder Spock wasn't really due to any of Spock's actions, rather than just emotional outburst due to frustration over an act of nature.
Star Trek The Next Generation is also amazing. Although it’s also dated, the story line is engaging. Patric Stewart plays the captain in this series. I don’t know if anyone is doing reactions to any of the different Star Trek series, but even watching them on your own time is worth it.

Memorizing 'Leonard McCoy' and 'Jim Kirk,' I've heard they exist: humans who know nothing of _Star Trek_. Nice to see a fresh perspective on a longtime love.
Hi Mary. It is interesting to watch the movie with somebody who doesn't know the lore and characters from the original Star Trek series. They are all new to you, some of us recognize them before they even state their names. But the same happens to me watching super hero movies, characters and lore I know from reading comic books eons ago, but all new to this generation. At the moment Nero appears from the future and changes the timeline (by killing Kirk's father and others) this timeline can be quite similar to the original series but at the same time differs in many ways. This allows the movie creators, director and writers to reference the old series but make things new and just a bit different. I think you will truly enjoy the next one. :-)

Fun Fact, Mary: In the film “The Terminal”, Zoe Saldana plays a Star Trek fan who likes Uhura. I guess her character’s dream came true! 🖖🏽
And then the guy who was trying to win her affection in the Terminal went on to help destroy the Death Star lol.
The original Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) from the 60s series just died last week so there are only 3 of the original case still alive. Original Kirk (William Shatner), Sulu (Georgie Takei) and Chekov (Walter Koenig). Williams Shatner is 91 and still acting and looks GREAT for his age.
I just realized the opening scene of Jim grabbing onto the cliff after driving the car over the edge perfectly foreshadows Jim hanging onto the ledge in Nero’s ship.
In both this timeline and the original timeline, Kirk _did_ cheat at the Kobiyashi Maru.
I absolutely loved that you love this movie. I would highly recommend the Star Trek trilogy from the 80s, Star Trek two the wrath of Khan, Star Trek three the search for Spock and finally Star Trek for the voyage home. They are actually a trilogy of interconnected films and then Star Trek 60 undiscovered country is kind of tied in with the trilogy as well. Please watch those if you can! I believe you’ll enjoy them just as much as this movie, but finished the new trilogy first
This was one of Chris Hemsworth's breakout roles. That's why it's such a relatively small role, he wasn't very well known before this. After people saw him in this role, he was pretty instantly recognized as someone with the chops to be a huge actor

Ya. This movie is a solid A for a newb, and A++++ for a Star Trek nerd familiar with the originals. Absolutely brilliant how they handled the original characters. Perfect film IMO.
You really don’t. This is a fine entry point for new fans, it was designed for that purpose.
This is easily JJ Abrams best movie, as most of his other stuff is sort of sketch. There's a lot of Star Trek, and while some of the older ones are a bit challenging to watch for a modern audience (pacing, cheesy 60s special effects, etc.), there are some really stellar moments spread out through the decades of content.
But the script, the philosophical challenges easily forgives the "cheesy."
Feels unfair to label most of JJs other works as "sketch". 'M:I 3' is one of the best in the series, and 'Super 8' is really good. And I know this is an infected point for so many, but 'The Force Awakens' was as good as it was ever going to be.
Fringe is FAR from Sketch.

Going into this without any context is a bit difficult sometimes, but they made sure newcomers can jump aboard right away! There's plenty of Star Trek to get into... you're gonna have a blast!
You should watch some of the original star trek movies too. A few years ago I had the opportunity to watch Wrath of Khan in Nashville and William Shatner (original Captain Kirk) was there to watch with us and answer questions afterwards. It was great. Also RIP to Nichelle Nichols who died recently. The Star Trek TV show had the first kiss of a black and white person on television. She was also asked by Nasa to be an important part of recruiting women and people of color to the space program. We have lost a legend.
Not many people know or remember this, but there was a Star Trek game on the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360. It's story is set in between this movie and Star Trek Into Darkness. The game explores the growing friendship between Chris Pine's Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock as they fight the Gorn, alien lizard people. The game is optionally a 2 player co-op, the first player plays Kirk, the second player plays Spock.

These three JJ Abrams movies are an alternate universe, prequel version of The original series and movies. But it probably would have been an even better experience if you’d watch those original movies first for better context. Star Trek has been around a lot longer than Star Wars and outside of the original Star Wars trilogy the Star Trek content is way better. The current TV/streaming content is even much better than the current Star Wars Disney+ stuff. Mandalorian being the exception.

I love a time travel concept that altering the past doesn't affect the future, but rather creates a new branch of timeline. Probably because it's just a little bit less confusing than all the paradoxes lmao.
I'm sure someone else has said it, but you probably should have started with the first 6 movies. They don't have that same modern day action flair (though many would say that is to their benefit) but they do enhance some aspects of this trilogy. :)
No, she should have started with the TV series. She would have a better understanding of the characters. The movies came from the series. If you're going to do something, do it right.

These films are linked to the original Star Trek Universe. It's another timeline. Spock in this is from that time. You need to watch other Trek if you're interested.

I grew up watching both STAR WARS and STAR TREK and loved them both for what they gave us. I enjoyed these ST movies and I'm looking forward to seeing you watch the next and hopefully the next.

The actors and actresses who played the iconic characters I grew up to in the 70s and 80s did a damn good job and it was interesting seeing those characters come together even if it was in a alternate time-line

New Star Trek is fun and really well casted! But you need to watch a episode or two of original series ( Space seed) and then the original movies. That's were the Heart is!

I really don't enjoy the JJ Abrams movies compared to older Trek. I don't feel the actual substance measures up. The BEST Trek movies are 2, 4, 6, and First Contact, but the best Trek ever are the shows TNG and DS9
@@gaberodriguez4023 I honestly prefer DS9 to TNG. I liked the slightly darker and almost deconstructionist take on Trek, because dear God TNG felt pretentious and self righteous sometimes. Also felt a lot of the characters were more colorful and interesting
In the original Star Trek series there was an even crazier weapon called The Doomsday Machine. It was an automated spaceship that devoured entire solar systems.

Awesome! You're officially ready to watch the 4-film "Genesis"Saga," Trek II, III, IV and VI, with the original cast! If you're not a die-hard "Trekkie", those four and the Abrams films are all you need to get the flavor and understand why people love these films and series. The Next Gen films kinda require some knowledge of that series, so I won't recommend those, but... if you enjoy the rest of the Abrams trilogy, PLEASE check out the Genesis Saga! Thanks!

A lot of history here that you didn't know between Jim Kirk & Spock. They became great friends in both the old TV shows of the 60's and in 6 different movies throughout the 80's and 90's.
What's shocking is Anton Yelchin passed away almost a month before Star Trek 3 came out. Anyway, this is actually my most favorite installment of the reboot franchise
It's a good film but it's not Star Trek. This is the the beginning of Jar Jar Abrams' destruction of Hollywood.
2 fun facts: The guy sitting next to Scotty in the transporter room is the son of the original Scotty from the 60s TV show & R2-D2 makes a cameo during the Vulcan debris field scene. Right after the Enterprise scrapes the other ship, R2 can be seen flying r to l on the viewscreen.
Those in the know knew Olson was going to die --- he was wearing a red uniform. BTW Mary, R2D2 made a cameo appearance in the movie. It was among the space debris when the Enterprise arrived on the scene where all the Federation ships were destroyed.
