    I owned an OM-1 for several weeks and was thrilled with it.. What a great camera. But then after watching Robin Wong's videos and this one, I realize for my purpose the OM-1 was overkill for an everyday camera. I shoot stills mostly and most of my video is casually shot with my phone. I had paid $28xx for the camera-lens kit. I didn't really need the lens because I have a 12-60 f2.8 already. Anyhow I returned it and got an E-M1m2 for $564 from mbp, and saved myself $2200 while getting pretty much 90% of what I was getting from the OM-1.

    Fully with you on this. Olympus is still one of the most overlooked and undervalued brands. I went to the Sony ZX1 for that product showcase feature but ditched it to go back to the EM5iii because I so drastically prefer the color, look and feel. Also laughed so hard at the age commentary. :P

    • @steve_heise
      @steve_heise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Haha - thanks Alexis. And yeah, I'm really interested in the EM5III. As far as I can tell, it's basically the EM1II in a smaller body. I came so close to buying one recently, but I ended up getting the Sony ZV-E10 instead for "TH-cam" purposes 'cause I felt like I needed a more modern Sony camera. Otherwise, every time on the channel when I said "Sony this or Sony that", I was secretly just talking about my A6000. lol

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras

      @@steve_heise yup you got the em5iii right - same sensor and autofocus system, color etc as the em1ii, just smaller. I love it. Same move on the Sony for me sans lens interchangeability. Undoubtably great cameras and in theory I like having a camera that is for filming only but I just haven’t gotten the color and roll off to look as nice as the em5iii. I know it’s possible but it just takes more work and I don’t want it to 😂 And now going back to the Olympus I’m like, the autofocus is great! Why was I thinking I needed more??

    I’ve had the original EM5 for years and still shoot with it occasionally. I just got the EM1 Mark II in excellent condition a few weeks ago for around $600 dollars and I am blown away by both the quality and the features. Much better capability than than any new budget camera in that range and amazing build quality. I am so happy I got this camera! From reviews I’ve read, it’s very close to the Mark iii at a substantial discount. The one thing I noticed where it shows it’s age is the EVF which is not up to the standard of newer camera releases. Other than that, it does everything I need it to and still produces amazing results

    I shot with an Olympus Em1 for years, eventually added Sony full frame equipment to my roster but never sold my Em-1 and lenses. A couple of months back I finally upgraded my EM-1 to the mark ii and I'm delighted!
    It's such a fun camera to use! IBIS is next level! Plus I'd trust it's weather sealing (with the right lenses) and build quality over almost anything else! Especially for the low price this camera is now available for.

    • @flagger2020

      How much different is the M1 to the mark ii. I always liked using my M1 but the image quality never stunned me.

    • @edash360
      @edash360 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@flagger2020 I perhaps wouldn't upgrade for image quality alone, though dynamic range is somewhat better and the files look more natural. I've gotten great results with the 12-40 2.8, and use it for professional work along side my Sony equipment.
      Indeed I was fortunate to be able to buy the camera for 400eu, I wanted the improved af/burst shooting, very quick to fire and quiet shutter,better ibis, ergonomics, tilt flip screen, excellent build quality/weather sealing (I would rather take my Olympus travelling than my Sony)
      I do feel the Em1-ii represents great value for all that you get, but depending on your uses it may not be enough of an upgrade over the Em-1.

    • @flagger2020
      @flagger2020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edash360 thanks for the info. Yes if I could find one so cheap I might upgrade esp as the newer sensor has much better high iso performance. I've also found the 12-40 pro lens to be excellent and it lives permanently on my M1. I live in a rainy place so I almost exclusively use either the pentax K1/K5 or M1 depending on how far I have to carry my gear. Keep shooting, regards.

    • @flagger2020
      @flagger2020 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@edash360 hello again, I finally found a mk11... the image quality is better, not so much resolution, but less noise at higher ISO is immediately noticeable (could just be superior processing). Biggest difference is AF, it's night and day, even with adapted 4/3 lens, the reason I got the M1 in the first place. Simply put it's simply just fast and is a much better camera for that alone.

    Years ago I found an EM1Mii for $900 but bought a newer EM5Miii instead.
    Now, buying the EM1-Mii as a second body, having the EM5Miii converted to full spectrum.
    I like Olympus same reason I have Pentax 645, all that legacy glass to play with!
    Finally, your video wasn't the most technical out there, but your video quality and color editing is the BEST I've seen out there on TH-cam.

      What were the main differences between the em5iii and em1ii that you noticed? I'm comparing both and can't decide. I like the build quality and webcam capability of the em1ii, but prefer the lighter weight, smaller size, and aesthetics of the em5iii.

    • @leonarddaneman810
      @leonarddaneman810 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jarrahfitzgerald2752 The dual slots are nice to have on the Markii. Also, that big hand grip! The Markii has a mag alloy body, but the plastic resin on the 5Markiii is just fine . . . (some complain the 5's tripod mount is a weak point).
      Otherwise, the sensor and processing are the same.
      One problem I had buying the Markii was the used cameras being used professionally. One I bought had to be returned, the reseller (MPB) not doing a full inspection.

    Bought the Em1 mkii a couple of years ago. Loved the handling and all the features. The dials and buttons just fell in the right place for me. So easy to use for longer periods of time.
    Anyway, I decided in my wisdom i wanted a smaller camera for travel so went with the Em5 mkiii; much of the Em1 mkii but in a smaller package. I loved it; still do……but, i missed the supreme handling. I can honestly say, the Em1 mkii is the best fitting camera for my hands….ever! Had to buy another so it lives happily with the smaller brother! Olympus really does make some awesome cameras!

    Olympus colours are just so good. Kind of Kodachromy but more natural. I have an EP1 which I'd totally forgotten about, but took for a walk the other day. AF is slow as hell and the backscreen is very low res, but I took these limitations as a given. It produces great jpeg images that I don't have to care about post processing and don't take up multiple terabyte drives to store. Let's be real, nothing we see online needs much more than a 2mb sensor.

    I miss olympus :(
    I used to have E-M5 mkII, which was great, but few things made me quite it: the battery life, the limited autofocus (contast detection based), the poor handeling (poor grip, and the ratio volume/weight was not great).
    Yes i had a grip, but there was connectivity issue, limited access to the battery, and made the all think heavier...
    this could have been solve with EM1 mkII, but it was too expensive for me. So I decided to quite olympus.

I have used it extensively with the 40-150mm kit lens but recently bought the 12-60mm f2.8-4. It shows that with a better lens you can take so much more from the E-3/E-300 sensor. If you cannot afford the 12-60 (about $250) the 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 (version I or II) is a great alternative. Wishing you lots of fun with the magnificent E-3!

    I Love my E-M1 for the fact that it is so small, lightweight and has KILLER IBIS and AF. BUT I'm missing decent video features and 4K 50p. What settings do you use for recording video? I can't seem to get really good looking footage (at least when comparing it to my GH5s). The highlights look ugly and without much detail and in general there's a unnatural amount of (perceived) sharpness goin on, even when dialing contrast and sharpening all the way down. I have of course tried Flat and OM-Log but haven't really been satisfied with how it looks when graded.

      The G85 will be better for video, but the Olympus will have better rendering of colours. Unfortunately, Olympus and Panasonic colours do not match well IMO. But this is only a concern if you are using them both (main/backup) for event photography and video.

    Hi. Really hope you can help me to decide which camera to choose. I like the size of EM5iii but I do sometimes will use the camera as an event photographer. The size of the camera with a 12-40 Pro lens and on-camera flash would be uncomfortable. But most of the time I will be using the camera for street photo sessions and travel. What is your opinion? Thanks.

    Awesome review, I have a question, I have a lot of Canon glass, would it work perfect with Commlite adapter to EF?
    I know on EM10 Mark III focus is an issue because has no Phase Detections, I am assuming this has both support.
    Also Steven you forgot to mention what sets this camera apart other than the IBIS, is the Focus Stacking, the most
    useful feature for macro photography. Perfect for close up shots, while having the whole shot in focus.

      Hai i am exactly now using the ef to m4/3 adapter and I use the L lens on my omd em5 my experience is honestly bad majority of the time since its hard for the camera to auto focus on something, idk if its just a old camera or just the adapter i am using which is bad “viltrox” but it still works for me since I use manual focus majority of the time.

    Hello Steven !
    Olympus Em1 Mark II or Sony zve10?
    They are Now in "dame" price but the Sony is in the shop and the oly on second hand.
    What do you think?
    I just want the BEST Quality un 4k24/30fps.

      I’ve had a hard time choosing between them this past year. I think I’ve used the ZV-E10 a little bit more since it has a bigger sensor and flat picture profiles, but in all honesty, it’s pretty much a tie for me. The E-M1 MK II has a way better body that’s so much more professional. I think the Olympus might be slightly better at 4K since it has Cinema 4K at 237MBS whereas the Sony only does 4K at 100MBS. I think I’ll make a video comparing them side by side because I’m really not sure. They both look so good.

    This camera was pushed to me by my local camera store when I starting getting into video 5 years ago. It really dawned on me this year how epic that advice was. I still have and use this camera regularly…even now we’ve got into bigger, more expensive projects. The stabilization is UNREAL and I’ve yet to use any other mirrorless camera that can even compete at all with it. The C4K is incredible. I beat my gear up and this thing is a tank (except for the front grip eventually wanting to come off). He’s totally right on handheld telephoto stuff as well. Now I’m just trying to get a couple primes to make the low-light performance a bit better.
