In my part of the world, ARIZONA USA, i understood that "flapjacks" is another word for pancakes. Interesting to learn in my daily lesson from Rikmeister that in different parts of the world that it is an oat bar😎
From my understanding pancakes are cooked on a griddle this is why they are griddle cakes in some places. Flapjacks are cooked in a skillet by fat frying. Some slight differences between flapjacks, corn fritters and hushpuppies but many use the terms interchangeably. There some regeonal differences in the pioneer westward movement.

I have always loved flapjack! And you are so right Rik, I always panic and think it needs more cooking! So now I know how to do it properly! Thank you.. ❤
Rik, I know I can "like" your videos even before I've watched the segment! I remember golden syrup from many times visiting or passing through England years ago. I'll have to order some. Google says sub in light molasses, but that's not the same! Thanks for a simple, but going to be delicious recipe!
Thank you. If you don't have golden syrup, here are several substitutes that work well in most recipes 1. Honey: A natural sweetener with a similar consistency to golden syrup. It may add a slightly floral taste. 2. Maple Syrup: Offers a richer, more distinct flavour, and works great for a subtle difference in taste. 3. Corn Syrup: Light corn syrup is the closest in terms of texture, though it lacks the caramel-like flavour of golden syrup. 4. Agave Nectar: A healthier, mild-flavoured option, but it’s a bit sweeter, so you may want to use slightly less. 5. Molasses: For a deeper, richer flavour, though it’s stronger and darker, so use sparingly. 6. Brown Sugar Syrup: You can make your own by dissolving brown sugar in water and boiling until it thickens. Any of these can replace golden syrup, but remember that the flavour profile might change slightly depending on the substitute. Best, Rik

I have not had it in years, but I think the Rogers company here in Canada ( or at least in BC- their family mansion used to be on Granville Street in Vancouver and may still be ) made Golden syrup. My grandma always had some around. I'll have to go look in the grocery store.
Looks like grandma's very simple version of a granola bar. I think chopped almonds, nuts and dried fruits would do the thing quite well. I'm not a fan of granola bars, but thanks for showing! 😉
It seems something like the Canadian (Nova Scotia) oat cakes that I've been making for a couple of years now, but softer and more like cake. Can't wait to try it.
Ever since I was a small 5 year old child I loved my husband, one of the many reasons was that I was convinced that Golden Syrup was invented by his family. His father was a GP, and I struggled to reconcile how he could have invented the syrup, but hey. I was a small kid at the time!
(363) Oooh. SUPER. JUST by coincidence I just got a tin of Lyle's Golden Syrup from Amazon. To me, these tasted quite similar to ANZAC biscuits, minus the coconut of course.
Hi Rik and thanks from Washington . These sound wonderful for an easy grab an go breakfast alternative to everyday eggs. Is there an list of ingredients measurements? Really enjoy your recipes.
👍🏻 Thankyou Rik! In South Africa 🇿🇦, we call these Oat Crunchies .. but half the time people add baking soda too, presumably to react with the sugar by making it fizz and go brittle when it cools. But that yields an awful metallic taste which i can't stand. So _thankyou_ for proving that the baking soda is not necessary!! ℹ️ BTW, for us, flapjacks are like thick pancakes, crumpets really
The baking soda is used in another version of flapjacks in Australia - for their Anzac biscuits - and it has been a common ingredient worldwide to make them lighter and crunchier like a biscuit. However, like you leave out the baking soda. Thank you. Best, Rik
In Australia, this is the recipe for Anzac biscuits. Only they're spooned individually into a baking tray and baked as individual biscuits. I had no idea that this is what American call flapjacks.
Similar ingredients - Anzac biscuits have baking soda (which reacts with the syrup to give the biscuits a light texture) plus a few other different ingredient - so similar. Thank you. Best, Rik
In America, flapjacks are the same as pancakes. It's a regional name, more common in the South. Some areas call them griddlecakes or hoecakes but they're all batter-based pancakes. I've never seen these before and they look lovely.

Yes. Ordinary oats absorb butter etc more slowly - give them a mix and let stand a few mins before chucking them in the tin. It could be a looser mix - so a quick way to solve that is to give a small amount a blend. Mix in with the rest. You might need up to 5 mins more cooking time. Don't over cook. Thank you. Best, Rik
Love this, going to try it with ground flax and rice, lol! I've ordered golden syrup online, always comes smashed and leaking...any chance you can show us how you would make it? I've ordered black treacle on line, same dented and leaking...
