    It's interesting that I found this post! I'm going to be presenting at an ECE conference for the first time ever in May. I'm kind of nervous, but I know that it would look good on my CV when I apply for a Ph.D program.

  • @wooptydew
    @wooptydew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, I will ask. How do you find conferences? When do you usually start presenting (what year)? How do you find the time, between reading and teaching, and home life, to participate in conferences? Ahhhhhh!

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This actually should be a video! So thank you for asking!
      For the most part 3 different places I suggest finding conferences
      1. Joining professional academic organizations :D
      They have list servs that often let you know when they are similar orgs are having conferences
      2. On campus resources like your department's list serv, career centers
      3. Google/Word of mouth
      This is kind of keepin your ear to the ground and seeing whats out there and when... this is the easiest one to find conferences to go to but the hardest to find conferences to attend because often you may find them AFTER the call for papers.
      I started presenting my first year but honestly if you have a 5+ year program, I think year 3 makes WAAAAY more sense and if you do 1 or 2 presentations a year you will be fine! They are important but not like you need a TON to be successfull
      lol The last question is a little more complex. And in short... I don't really know. I have to think about it a little more because ... I feel like you just kind of make it work lol but I am sure there are actual strategies out there lol

      Hi!
      Im so happy you find my videos helpful. Generally i think a PhD journey is very personal and requires a lot of spending time and askin yourself what you hope to get out of it.
      PhDs are much more about research and academic training. And depending on your field you may not need it. HOWEVER i always feel like if you want to get it... you should ALWAYS go pursue it!
      Also im not sure how well you know how phds work but if you haven't seen my video on it... maybe check it out here - th-cam.com/video/4zVX6g9GDn8/w-d-xo.html
      I also have a video about the differences between masters and phd if you want to look into that too heres the link

    Hi! I really love all of your videos and the information you provide. I am about to begin writing a proposal to present at a conference. Do you have any advice for me in writing the proposal? I want to make sure I include everything that's required of me and also ensure I get accepted to present :) Thanks!

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!!! !
      I think the best advice I can give is to try and find the abstracts of past accepted conference presentations or if they have a journal read the abstracts in their journals. This way you can present the information they think is most important. I think all conferences have their preferences and there is not standard "right" way!
      When I do it I try to have it begin with the current state of the field, then state the problem/need, then demonstrate my argument. Then break down how a summary of how I made my argument. and then a maybe a sentence of my methods and then bring it all together as to its significance.
      This is an example of something I submitted!
      While Mexico may pride itself on the racial and ethnic diversity of its people, the popular Mestizaje rhetoric is not as inclusive as the nation may want to believe. Despite the historic and current presence of afro-decedent populations in Mexico, through visual art, oppressive social norms, and propaganda, Mexico has effectively erased groups of African descent out of its national identity. This exposition addresses the historic and current racial composition of Mexico in order to achieve an understanding of the racial complexity of the nation and its history. It explores the creation of colonial Casta Paintings and the sistema de casta to establishes a vocabulary that encouraged the separation of Mexican society by ethnicity and class. It also argues the white elites in power maintained the beliefs of the caste system throughout post-revolutionary Mexico and with the support of 20th century mural paintings disseminated and nationalized a cry for “whitening” Mexico’s population under the guise of Mestizaje. Another important component is to observe the constant effort to other and discredit the black body. Allowing the reader to understand that the Black population of Mexico did not disappear, or die out, but instead was systematically, erased from the nation’s history and identity. Lastly taking all the aforementioned information into consideration, the composition analyzes how the nationalization of Mestizaje encouraged a cultural ethnic lynching of Mexico, which lead to the misrepresentation and discrimination of Afro-Mexicans today.

    May I ask, how can I go about reaching out to the organisers of a conference? Is it advisable to do so? Thanks

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Usually the organizers contacts are somewhere on the website. Generally you can ask them questions about funding/travel grants, student discounts or if you have questions about the submission process. You could also reach out if you submitted and havent heard back from them and it is past the deadline.
      Those are the main reasons people reach out. Do you have a specific circumstance that you have a question about?
      Thank you for commenting!
