The Poor Man's Plaid - The New Model S Long Range (Full Review)

  • The original Model S, launched in 2012, was a great car, but it lacked essential creature comforts like parking sensors and heated rear seats. Now 10 years later, Tesla released a new Model S for 2021 and people are saying it’s just a minor update to the same car Tesla sold a decade ago. We spent two weeks driving one all around the country and even set the new EV Cannonball record (twice) with it. So with the appearance largely the same, we set out to find out if the haters were right, is the 2021 Model S just a minor evolution or a revolutionary new vehicle.

I ordered a Plaid and a Long Range model S Jan 28 2021. I got the Plaid early August and the long range end of Oct. This guys positive comments on the Model S LR resonate with my experience. The Plaid is scary above 60 mph but both vehicles will give you tunnel vision during full acceleration. After I scared a dozen people in the Plaid I got my Long range and I can say the plaid is not worth the extra money. I can barely tell them apart. I got grey for both. The long range handles better (feels a little lighter) rides better (19”tires on the long range) and brakes a little better. (same brakes but lighter car)
Tesla is laughing all the way to the bank selling the Plaid for 40k more than the long range. I’m laughing too as I was able to sell my Plaid for $24,000 more than I paid and that was after paying 11k in CA sales tax on that car. I love the Model S LR and agree with the reviewer that it’s the better deal. I really feel like I dodged a bullet being able to get my money back and then some on the Plaid. It’s only advantage was pulling like a jet aircraft from 60. You really need some smooth large sections of asphalt to pull it off safely. Yes it was amazing but the long range still wows me every time I accelerate beating even Charger hellcats easily.

@@jamespaul1835 I've driven the plaid and it's insane, I can definetly differentiate the 2 second experience that you get in the plaid to the previous model s performance which was a 2.5ish sec car to a 2.9 second car like a corvette and I don't think that a 2 second 0-60 time feels the same as a 3.2 that you get long range. For a sensible buyer, the long range is obviously the better buy, but I don't think Tesla is ripping you off with a $40,000 upgrade to plaid. There is a logical and valid case to skip over to the plaid and the $40,000 price increase is a steal considering an extra $60,000 to upgrade from a regular 5 series to the more performance oriented M5 comp (M5 isn't available) and an extra $40000 from comp to CS...the same goes for a regular c-class to AMG c class. But there is a valid point that can be made going for the upgrade and that same reason applies to the model s LR and plaid.

    • @jamespaul1835
      @jamespaul1835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@thedumbconspirator4956 I did 12 runs with a draggy and the fastest I could get with the plaid was 2.37 seconds whereas I was getting 3.11 seconds with the long range.
While the Plaid felt just barely faster from 0 to 60 it was from 60 where pretty much anyone would be like oh my gosh. It’s relentless. My experience with both cars was that if people were allowed to drive both of them as much as I did many would end up being happy to accept the long range model. I think it’s interesting that after my experience with these two cars Tesla will get you a Plaid as soon as December but if you want the long range it’s going to be the end of next year, my guess is they don’t want people to know how good the long range is but I know.

Excellent review! I wish I had rented your Model Y a couple months ago just to show my support for you guys but my plans changed! Either way, I really think they solved a lot of the issues I had with my 2017 Model S. I really appreciate the center screen being laid out in a landscape fashion instead of the portrait, as the older model created a right corner my right knee would always hit. The seats being heated and cooled brings a more luxury and premium feel to a car that should feel like that. All in all I might think about trading in the Model Y for the Model S sometime next year!

When I bought my Model 3... I had the same dilemma... Long Range or Performance.
At the time there was about £10,000 difference with lots of people saying it wasn't worth it.
So against all odds, I bought the Performance...
    Then guess what...
1st thing my mates said when I rolled up in it brand new... "is it the Performance version"
It would have been a blow to say no... but instead I looked at them and said "come on... you know me"...

Lmfao. That is straight delusional. The model S already looks outdated. The 911 too this day still turns heads and gets people taking pics. It feels special to see one on the road. A model S is NOTHING like that. I leased my model s plaid when it first came out and I had no one staring at my car giving me compliments like my dad's 992 targa 4 gts . Every time I have went with him theres people giving compliments. Even in my new BMW m3 I get compliments. I never once got a compliment randomly in my model s only after talking to someone or from my friends. Truth is even driving one doesn't feel special becuase the interior is so minimalistic. I sold some cars and thought I would purchase a Plaid. I have a friend with one and he demonstrated the car to me. The acceration is brutal at the end I really did not feel like I wanted to go this fast - 153 through the quarter mile. I just have no wish to be caught at that speed. Its way to easy to do it. I felt for the price that it just wasn't worth bragging rights. So I spent way less money on a used model s long range plus. The 0-60 is only 1 second longer and the price of my car was only 53k used. You still get tunnel vision if you want just not to 153. The traction control on the model s is seamless you will not ever know or care about traction control.

    • @KLWTTS

You might be right about the order of the menus themselves for Pre-refresh S to refresh S but many of the controls screens are convoluted and I think they could streamline the order of the controls much like Model 3 and Model Y. *Full controls tab lists below*
      IMO they should:
1: Rethink the layout of the “Controls” menu
      2. Relocate Odometer data.
      3. Merge “Pedals and Steering” with “Suspension”
      4. Have “Autopilot” next to “Navigation”
      5. Remove “Charging” and make it an ever present icon bringing up a separate menu like in Model 3/Y
      Menus For reference:
Model 3/Y: Quick Controls, Lights, Locks, Display, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and now Upgrades
New S/X: Controls, Pedals and Steering,
Suspension, Charging, Autopilot, Locks, Lights, Display, Trips, Driving, Autopilot, Navigation, Safety, Service, Software, and Upgrades
