There's also the absolutely terrifying final stage you didnt touch on: glitches that turn the game into a trojan virus. An example of this is the server vulnerability found in the dark souls pc netcode, which would allow another player to change and edit files on YOUR COMPUTER. THANKFULLY the person who discovered this glitch wasn't a malicious piece of shit and immediately reported it to bandai namco, so they shut down the servers before anyone was really hurt. Still terrifying to think that you could get your computer hacked for essentially just playing an online game.

Well, this isn't a glitch, but in the Japanese erotic game "Cross Days", part of the "Days" franchise (anime people are usually familiar with the "School Days" thing), when installing the game, you would be asked for the CD-Key or some shit like that. Well, that's fair, isn't it? As long as you have the CD-Key, you could play the game, right? Yes, but the devs did some very fucked up things, and basically, throughout the game's code, the game actively checks for the CD-Key, and if it does not detect it, the game will start to act as a Trojan virus, will hack into your webcam, take a picture of you and any sort of Internet browser search history will be uploaded to the dev's site as some sort of "Wall of Shame". To get rid of it, all you had to do was write a letter to the developers, confessing your mistakes, then paying a fee which would equal that of the game's full price, and they would actually remove your info from the site.
Anyway, what kind of game has you fill out a survey inputting your data just so you could play it? Come on, now.

In the Fist of The North Star arcade fighting game, there's a specific sequence of moves that causes the game to register an infinity hit combo. The game is stuck in a code loop so CPU intensive it actually overheats the processor, which eventually burns out the motherboard and may even cause the cabinet to literally catch fire. This has to be the most harmful bug I know of in a video game.

There's a bug in a racing game Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 which prevents you from getting 100% completion. One of the racers requires you to have a certain amount of cash to challenge them. In the Japanese version, this was 100,000,000 credits. When the developers ported over the game, they forgot to change this value to 1,000,000, and since the credit cap was ten below 100 million, it's impossible to challenge them without cheating.

In the GTA San Andreas remaster, streamer Vargskelethor Joel drank so much soda that the game crashed. Anytime he would load in, the sheer number of empty cans he left behind would crash the game again, leaving his save file useless. You can find the clip on TH-cam pretty easily.

In The Sims 2 there was a glitch where if you deleted a gravestone, it had a possibility to corrupt your entire savefile. A sim would attempt to recollect a deceased sim, but that sim was no longer existing, causing the corruption. reminds me of a something that once happened to me when playing Morrowind:
i was trying to use an exploit i figured out, where you summon a creature, kill it yourself, then quickly loot it before it despawns.
it's a sneaky way to get lots of Daedric weapons.
BUT, every time you loot a creature in that game, there's an option to "remove corpse".
IF you do that with a summoned creature, the game freaks out, throwing up a bunch of error messages because it can't show the proper despawn animation!
it didn't crash the game, but it was certainly scary!

Fortunately rumors of deleting graves and Sims corrupting neighborhoods are pretty overstated. Both are safe, although there are still some other things one should avoid such as moving Sims between neighborhoods or marrying the Grim Reaper.

You can actually get out of the eggman loop. By immediately activating your booster and holding forward and left youll eventually be able to see a tube you're supposed to float down through. You can bump into it and get back into the map. I know because I had to do it back in the day.
The soulcalibur 3 one was a painful one since back then we didn't have great access to the internet and so had no idea what was causing the issue. Ended up using an Xploder disk to reunlock all my stuff.

Red/Blue Missingno is surprisingly harmless compared to a lot of other glitch pokemon. Encountering it causes it to dump a bunch of garbage data into the hall of fame which will screw it up forever for that file but rarely has a ton of lasting consequence for the save file. Yellow Missingno just outright crashes the game.

    • @saladmancer4802

@LetsSayYesSuckerRofl not necessarily. There's a metric ton of missingno and a good chunk of glitch pokemon that aren't missingno can end up corrupting your save if you aren't careful. Your pokedex number going above 151 in pokemon blue because of catching them will cause the game to crash when getting your pokedex rating.

It should be noted that MissingNo. proper cannot corrupt your game file-- it can give you access to, say, item underflow, which can corrupt your game if you're not careful, but MissingNo. is largely harmless. It's the many other glitch 'mons of RBY that are far more unfriendly (and also Yellow's MissingNo.), which are often conflated with or mistaken for MissingNo.
One of these is Charizard 'M. This is not to be confused with 'M (which is essentially just synonymous with MissingNo.), because Charizard 'M resides in hex value FF. Those of you with any coding knowledge may immediately recognize the issue here, but for those who aren't aware, hex value FF indicates the end of a string. In other words, you're effectively picking a fight with the cancel button. That thing gets out of hand very quickly and will immediately destroy anything in its proximity for good, because if they're after the FF hex value, the game doesn't think they exist.

I also want to add Q was who I used to experiment with super glitch on cartridge due to how easy they are to get on yellow and how early they learn a glitch move to activate it (level 11 or 12 if I remember right), it's also worth noting that on an imperfect emulator, and possibly on cartridge too but I lost my gbc by the time I learned more about it to check it out, there is a way to view your pokemon menu when super glitch is active but it can overwrite your save file if you're not careful

One of the worst glitches that I ever saw was a data wiping glitch on Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. It didn't happen until the middle of the last post-game boss fight, the ABSOLUTE FINAL PART OF THE GAME, and it factory reset the cartridge so any save data you had - not just the one you were playing from - was entirely erased. I put it aside for about a month, thought about replaying it, and then got hit with a sense of "why bother" solely because of that glitch happening when I almost got 100% completion. I know it was always a niche series, but I do wonder if that glitch played a role in the Golden Sun series being shelved for good after that entry.

    • @TWLSpark

Something similar happens in some copies of Rayman 2 where the game throws up a closeup of a robot pirate's face and de-loads some of the level geometries to make the game harder to play.

I remember in one of my old favorite games, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, there's a progress halter in one of the dungeons. If you use a save point conveniently located next to a certain open door, quit and reload, then that open door will be permanently closed and the game is essentially over. You can't leave the dungeon and you can't progress, so you have to restart the whole game (and this happens midgame, a good 6 hrs in). I lost two playthroughs to that glitch. The second time wasn't even my fault, we just happened to have a power outage while I was in that one particular dungeon, and when I rebooted the game the dreaded door of doom was forever locked

I remember in one of the older versions of Minecraft, there was a glitch that could cause windows to crash. Basically back them commands worked differently, there were item ID numbers instead of names. For example the command "/give [player name] 1 2" would give you two stone blocks because ID of stone is 1 and the number next to it is the amount you're getting. You could also get spawn eggs this way but you would also have to add another number for the ID of the entity you're summoning. For example "/give [player name] [ID number for spawn egg] 1 1 would give you a pig spawn egg because ID of a pig was also 1. Now this is where shit got weird. In Minecraft paintings are also considered entities, and it was possible to get a painting spawn egg using this command. The egg itself would just do nothing but when you put it in a spawner block, your entire system would crash (or maybe it is because my PC was trash, but you get the point).

When I was a kid, I had an extremely glitched copy of Red Dead Redemption on the PS3. It was a used copy from a pawn shop and it was covered in scratches. Funnily enough I never actually encountered any of the well known glitches like flying carts and NPCs acting like animals. The only glitches I ever had were frame drops, lag, and the game crashing. It was so bad, I could never actually beat the game because a mission in Mexico was literally unbeatable because the game would crash every single time. There were two missions earlier in the game that took me forever to beat because they would also crash a lot, but I was eventually able to get past them. Eventually, the old PS3 I was playing on also starting failing and it got to the point where the game could hardly even play normally. The console could only stay on for about an hour before it would crash. Eventually, it broke all together and I got a new PS3 and a good copy of Rdr to go with it. I was pretty mad when I got past the crashing mission in Mexico and saw that I was pretty close to beating the game.

Reminds me of our old PS3 that we still have somewhere. We used to play Dark Souls on that poor thing religiously, and when it got older the game itself saw consequences. Nothing nifty, just stuff like that one time where it took 15 minutes to load somewhere and walls becoming transparent when the console got too hot. I still find the wall transparency thing fascinating though; was it something built within the game (such as being coded to unload areas that take up too much memory to help the game run smoother) or was is something about the heat of the console that messed it up? I guess I’ll never know, but I’ll always find something fascinating about being able to basically see into the game’s code from inside the game while it’s still running. Like some sort of vivisection of a simply enthralling beast. Oh, but perhaps I have a strange perspective on things, I really don’t know.

What still ticks me off about the Luigi's Mansion one is that there is a Boo in the room which is very likely to leave the room and have you chase it, as the videoclip showed. Boos are time sensitive when they're fleeing and grabbing an item starts a long animation that does not pause the game, so you're not gonna stop to grab the key on the way out. Oh and catching the Boo prompts you to save the game.

19:22 It's factually incorrect that a Nintendo 3DS gets bricked by Virtual Console. The VC just starts to hang like shown in the video; in such a way the only way out is to force-power-off the console. However, no harm was done to anything. The console boots back up as normal. What's actually happening is that the game hits an illegal opcode in the virtualized NES and Virtual Console doesn't know what to do so it deadlocks itself. This particular case of false information truly spreads like wildfire and no one bothers to check that it's actually the case, like I just did.
And if there was a case where the 3DS would actually die is probably because the console is set to say goodbye at some point, be it malfunctioning RAM, the CPU and/or GPU are acting up or the VC title is corrupted and somehow the bytes line up to exploit the system.
Otherwise, I think this was a decent video.

So there's this glitch on one of my childhood games: Tomb Raider Legend. I believe it happened to me although I'm not 100% sure.
Basically there's a level in the end game where you go to England and near the end of that level there's an underground castle. Outside the castle there's multiple gears that you can interact with, but if you interact with them before the boss of that area spawns, congrats you have just killed your playthrough. There is no way of killing the boss without interacting with the gears, and if you interact with them beforehand they glitch out and don't work when you're actually meant to use them. This is very easy to do and I'm pretty sure it happened to me many moons ago.

After I gave them to him, he told me to go talk to someone in the cafeteria I believe. But for some reason, I have no idea why this happened, but when I tried, the person in the cafeteria never triggered the correct dialogue, and every time I exited and reentered the teacher's lounge, I had to find and give the janitor his papers back, every time. No matter how many times I did it, I was stuck in an endless loop and couldn't progress any further. Nothing like that had ever happened to me in that game before and I still have no idea why it happened. This was fixed by advancing the clock by a year, and it's wild how many things Nintendo made fix it when used: e-Reader cards, linking to later Gen 3 games, linking to the Gamecube games, linking to Pokemon Box storage. Pretty much doing anything except linking between Ruby and Sapphire fixes it.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy has a really bad one, if you save at a normal save point at a certain part and then game over, when you load that save again a door needed to progress is permanently closed (similar to Metroid Other M). This was really bad because the game was hard so you were likely to game over (and that part was one of the hardest in the game), and save points were easily an hour or even two hours apart in most cases so you were very likely to game over there, and it was half-way into the game easily 10-20 hours lost because it was a lengthy game. And it was a linear game, not open-world so there was a good chance you'd get stuck. Thankfully it's as you said, they remastered it on GoG and quickly and easily made an update patch, since patches on PS2 weren't really a thing. Interestingly there were old game patches back in the 90's and 2000s, but generally only on the PC. Like in the PC release of Mafia they released a patch to reduce the difficulty of the racing mission.

There was a glitch in the ''black label'' version of Jak X on ps2, which had a chance of being stuck constantly saving and if you restart you either will not have your save or stuck with a somewhat undeletable corrupted save. There is kinda a way to delete the corrupted save by playing gran turismo on ps2 which had a save editor that could also be used to delete saves from other games including some corrupted saves. Its called the Jak X Autosave glitch.

I've heard of restarting save files to undo a nasty glitch, but I didn't think a nasty glitch would INVOLVE saving over and over again in itself
Then again, to be fair, I've never even heard of Jak X's existence before hearing about this either
(Also you said some form of "Save" 8 times in that comment. Not complaining, since it makes the comment make more sense, I just thought it was funny)

In GTA 3 if you don't do the missions in a specific order, you can be locked out of 100% completion. This is because if you pass a mission which kills another character that also has missions, causing it to permanently lock. The main storyline can be completed, but you can't get 100%.

Loved to glitch my old copy of Pokémon blue. I did so many glitches and sought out more each play through, even completed the Pokédex with glitches alone via teleport glitch. But one glitch that really messed up one play through was catching a Kabutops fossil by doing the teleport glitch on Lavender town/ route 8. After I caught the fossil, every time I entered route 8 it would make the game extremely slow (like walking and using the start menu). It was only on that route no other route was affected. In the end, I restarted the game and it was fixed.

Something I remember about Missingno is that people made concept art for what it would “really” look like as a Pokémon, not a random glitchy rectangle thing.
From what I remembered, some people interpreted it as a flamingo, and others interpreted it as a vulture with a similar color palette to the infamous glitched rectangle.
The fan art I saw of the vulture used to absolutely **TERRIFY** me as a child. I have no idea why. Admittedly, I haven’t seen it in years, so I’m not sure if I’d still be scared by it. Still don’t have the guts to search it up again, though. Younger me was weird, and that vulture fan art was genuinely one of my biggest fears. I don’t even think normal vultures are that scary.
Again, it’s been so long, so maybe I got it all wrong with these being “fan art”. Maybe they were scrapped Gen 1 Pokémon designs? I don’t really play Pokémon, but my brother does a lot, so I’m more than acquainted with a lot of things about the series.

They likely interpreted it as a bird because of it's typing, which iirc is an nonexistent "bird" type. My bet is that the fanart was creepy in nature because of how inherently "creepy" Missingno is. It's a being that shouldn't be, after all.

I remember being really careful on my playthrough of virtue's last reward because it had a well-known glitch where if you saved in the PEC escape section, your save file could get bricked. Also just recently I was playing through Eastshade for the first time, and the final quest bugged out to the point where I couldn't finish the game right at the very end.

That Sonic Adventure 2 one was actually a form of DRM. It was somehow able to detect if the copy you're playing was cracked and set the level to have no collision accordingly. This was in 2001 after all, after the death of the Dreamcast and during the height of Dreamcast piracy. Still extremely irritating though. I've read a few stories of people who were able to glide Eggman over to where his level exit is which is crazy. Had to have been pure luck but judging by the state of SA2 speedrunning it's totally possible.

But why put an anti piracy measure at the end of the game?

    • @NickGoblin
      @NickGoblin ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@theunknown2343 according to The Cutting Room Floor: "The game runs a disc check to make sure it is being run from an official GD-ROM rather than a copied disc. If this check fails, Eggman will fall through the floor when he starts his section of Cannon's Core, although the level can still be completed by navigating to the end. This cannot happen on emulators, even when using a pirate copy." My guess is if the people who got that far really enjoyed the game at that point, they'd buy it to see how it ends.

    • @NickGoblin
      @NickGoblin ปีที่แล้ว +6

My guess as to why emulators never have a problem with this check is because the Dreamcast probably checks if it's being booted from MIL-CD mode, which is the exploit that allowed pirated games to be played. Dreamcast emulators don't even bother with the bios let alone the copy checks and boot routine, so the game just assumes it's running off of a gd rom.

The Eggman glitch wasn't so much as a glitch, but was in fact an Anti Piracy measure from what I read anyway). What _was_ a game-breaking glitch in SA2 was checking the Chao Doctor about how many times your Chao has reincarnated (in the original Dreamcast version) in International copies - due to poor translation, the game will heavily bug out and inevitably crash. This can end up corrupting the save data.

I think one of the funniest oversights in gaming comes in pokemon red/blue. Say you really wanted that ivysaur, so much so that you grinded to get it before you got your Pokédex. While now you can’t get your Pokédex because the game thinks you already have it.
