The Sonic fanbase is definitely something that needs to be deeply analyzed and documented. It’s like a weird domino effect. What started out as a blue cartoon Hedgehog made to be a competitor to Mario ended up attracting people who created the most bizarre shit you’d see on the internet.
I'm sort of a lapsed Sonic fan, I played the original Genesis games as a little kid and played some of the then modern games from the PS2 era. I never met anybody in real life who was a big Sonic fan but when I discovered the Sonic fandom on the Internet and found about some of the most infamous members like Chris-Chan I couldn't believe what I saw

In my opinion, franchises aimed at kids always attract the biggest degenerates (look at MLP, Minecraft, Pokemon, etc), and Sonic has a lot of intersection with the furry fandom as well
I also think that although Sonic is for kids, it has a lot of edge (from Adventure all the way to Unleashed) with some of it's plot points and characterizations, so a lot of kids that for whatever reason (religious parents, or ingrained religious beliefs, maybe trouble developing) can't enjoy anime, certain games and movies, may latch on to Sonic to get that fix during their teenage years
I dont know how to best describe it, but I think kids media just attracts a very specific type of adult. you have the "I like this because its cute, enjoyable, entertaining" type of adults, of course... but then you have the "I am 30 but I have the mentality of a 10 year old, but like a really weird hypersexual 10 year old" fans, who cling to kids media entirely because it is, well, childish enough for them to enjoy. These people dont flock to adult media as frequently because theres more mature themes, lessons, realistic depictions of everyday realities. Do you think a 30 year old (with the mentality of a literal toddler) would rather obsess over a show with realistic depictions of everyday life, drama and struggles and death, or do you think they would rather obsess over a silly cartoon that reinforces the fairytale rainbow sparkles reality they wish so badly to exist in?

I have often wonder how Sonic, of all things, consistently attracts the most eccentric and devoted individuals who practically worship him like a literal god? How did this happen and why is it so consistent?
My guess is that it's a mix between consistent and prolonged exposure during childhood and being a bland marketable brand with relatable characters. People have obsessed over other video games too, like that one story on those guys roleplaying as FF characters, but that brand doesn't have nearly the exposure that Sonic has

As for the character, I think it's easy to see how it resonates well with the public at large, I think it's valid to compare Sonic with his former arch-rival, Mario. Mario, in many ways, beats Sonic in terms of quality for the games, game sales in general and his movie has outgrossed both Sonic's movies combined, but I don't think people are obsessed with Mario as they do with Sonic. Some would argue it's because Mario hasn't a lot of personality in his main games, perhaps it's the fact Sonic is more of a escapist character compared to Mario

Honestly I’d be delighted to watch someone make fun of the overly obsession and idolizing of Sans/Megalovania stuff. I used to be apart of Undertale fandom community(not the idolization part though I never really played the game itself) on Google Plus(before it got shut down) and Tumblr and looking back now that I’ve changed, I cringe at that Undertale phase I went through and I REFUSE to go back to a crazy time like this again.

As a Sonic fan I'm thankful that I didn't speak English back in the mid 00's because I'm pretty sure I'd have been traumatized if I had accidentally found that website back in '04 when I was just 14 years old, that whole story had an overabundance of plot twists that just kept getting weirder and creepier.

Man, this takes me back when Mutahar and his friends did a reading on this a couple of years ago. That was the first time I heard about Sonic Passion and was kind of a gateway for me for absolutely insane the Sonic Fanbase was. I can't believe how much time has passed since then.
Also, that Paul guy had a Deviantart page back in the day that also had some cringey stuff like how him and Amy had three children along with a baby that was due soon, he also had this shitty Tetris clone but with Amy plastered on to it. I also got in touch with a person who was in contact with him back in the day. The person claimed that he was also obsessed with Zelda and was in a relationship with her and would bring it up with people all the time. He also tried sending them Zelda Rule34 when she was underaged too.
Yeah, this guy was an absolute nutcase and I hope he never sees the light of day.

I think the reason for people's obsessiveness within the Sonic fandom is actually a byproduct of the gameplay, which rewards both replayability and memorization to a much greater degree than with other series.
To get to the golden paths, you have to play the game quickly. To play the game quickly, you have to know the mechanics well. To get to know the mechanics well, you have to play the game often. At least with the Genesis games. 3D Sonic was much more about optimizing a single straight path, which also rewards knowledge and repeat playthroughs, but in a very different way (you normally have to memorize level layout rather than mechanic synchronization)
This type of game design isn't bad, it rewards skill and encourages being thorough, but it likely plays a role in why... certain people are drawn to Sonic.
As a Sonic fan, I gotta say that observing the nutcases is a big part of why I enjoy this fandom so much.
I mean, she's right about deleting all of her photos and videos, imagine that she's at work and then HR call her and fire her on the spot because they found her Sonic cross she's been carrying all these 18 years 💀💀

As a sonic fan of over almost two decades now I promise it’s always been like this and it hasn’t really gotten worse or better just kinda stayed the same. The last time I heard of Sonic Passion (if you're really curious it was from a video by Blackbustercritic), she went by Alex Henriol. Either way, her attempts to cover this all up through threats of litigation are NOT JUST pathetic and futile, it accidentally led to self-condemnation. This is at its very core, the Streisand effect.
I really don't care about Sonic as a franchise but man, the fandom and especially in the old age of the internet were truly unique, I hope is archived to surpass millenniums and future generations see them too
I remember reading about this site back in like 2007. I'm pretty sure the creator posted using her full real name, so she used to have no qualms with tying the site to herself. Understandable that she would want to distance herself in retrospect.
I think the ban against "polygamy" was because they were so obsessed with these characters, they thought people having multiple Sonic spouses would "cheapen" their own love. I don't think they really objected to it on moral grounds, considering most Sonic characters are underage.
Some people had Sonic characters as whole imaginary friends they would describe sharing their bed with.

She disappeared for a long time, I didn't know she was back in public again. Man great video, this took down an old internet trip.

It genuinely makes me mad that the Sonic fandom, indirectly or not, swept the Paulandamy case under the rug.
Seriously, you'd think the unspeakable crimes Paul did would have made its way across the Sonic fandom, putting this guy at the same levels of Chris-Chan, but sadly, it didn't. The only two people (with large numbers of viewers) I’ve seen actually address Paul's crimes are BlackBusterCritic and JUST A ROBOT (Sonic93 doesn’t count since her video bringing him up was taken down along with her entire channel), and even then a lot of people in their comment sections were more concerned about the state of the Sonic fandom itself than the fact that real CHILDREN were harmed in a way that will scar them for life. It’s so sickening and downright selfish.
All I have to say is THANK YOU for bringing awareness to it. Because the fact that people dropped the situation so easily actually makes my blood boil, especially since I have NEVER forgotten about this case since I first heard about it. It's THAT bad.

The best part about it being that most of the graphics in Gather Batter were already taking from sources the creator didn't own like the Sonic Advance games, Sonic Battle or even RPG VX of all things.

I have no idea why the Sonic franchise is a magnet for the strangest and most toxic people (Ken Penders, Chris-Chan, Richard Kuta, etc.), but this site was quite ahead of it's time. This was before everyone knew about 4chan and the horrors that would spawn from it as time went on, and that was before Tumblr and the horrors that would spawn from it, and... well, you get the idea.
If I were to formulate an answer as to why Sonic in particular is the stand out example for weirdos is because people tend to talk about the big names that got a bad rep like Chris and MTP for more than _just_ their Sonic stuff, which leads to people finding more weirdos as a result. As to why something like this doesn't happen as much as to say, Mario or Pokémon, is probably because of the sheer size of their own fanbases, which makes it a bit harder to peg down the odd ones. Sonic, while it does have a big fanbase in its own right, is nothing compared the size of what I just mentioned. But I also certainly don't doubt that sites akin to Sonic Passion exist for those series, you just gotta know where they are.
Anywho, great video as per usual, my man. I always appreciate your mindset with this kind of stuff, where yea, these people are strange, but as long as they don't do anything seriously wrong, then giving 'em hell ain't warranted.
