I remember reading something by the creator of RotSF, speaking fondly of an old friend of his who sadly died, who was basically just crazy and went into tortured dazes due to chronic tooth pain and made horrible, twisted art and stories to reflect how he felt. Re: Funny Pizza Land's mysterious origin, I actually did some looking into it earlier this year. The TH-cam channel of the guy who made it has a bunch of animations/projects that he dates by year, some of which are as old as 1999. What I think happened was that the game _was_ created in 2002, but either he held off from sharing it from the public on itch, or did share it somewhere obscure and it just never got noticed.
If it's actually from that era, I think that's incredible! Funny Pizza Land looks like one of the many modern games desperately trying to _replicate_ the style of 3D graphics from that era, but for it to be the genuine article would be astounding.
As a game dev myself, it’s kinda baffling how Nintendo somehow makes their development toolkit the hardest thing to acquire, but yet they always manage to give it to the devs with the lowest skill and passion Seriously; there’s a reason why nobody talks about the Switch EShop compared to how beloved 3DS and Wii shops were
Reminds me of Bob's game. The quick rundown is that a guy named Bob wanted to make an RPG but was obsessed with the fact that it had to be published on a Nintendo console, a handheld specifically: the GBA, but Nintendo never gave him a devkit because he was an _unproven dev_ the story gets more wacky but the point is Nintendo didn't gave this guy a chance. A demo of the game was eventually released (On Pc not GBA), while the game wasn't anything especial it has more quality and charm than the amounts of shovelware games Nintendo allows nowadays in the eshop. I get that Nintendo policies now aren't the same during the GBA games, but still I find it ironic that Nintendo was very protective of their tools and now anyone can practically have them.
Well the 3DS and Wii U eShops had their fair share of shovelware too, it's just that the era those existed in was kind of a golden age for indie and smaller budget games.
Especially when compared to Xbox Live Indie Games which had similar stuff of low caliber. Their XNA framework was free for anyone to make games on PC (there was still a fee for publishing to Xbox) and hosted a community forum that was mostly run by fans. I saw a bunch of stolen assets in those games because there were very loose standards, so you'd mostly just turned down for technical reasons (for instance, if your game doesn't detect controllers plugged in).
It reminds me of those experimental and unsettling Cartoon Network(usually through [adult swim]) series that didn't catch on, Robotomy in particular especially
all of these look right up my alley revenge of the sunfish is one of my favorite games and im not even being ironic or anything, the premise of "if you die you progress but if you don't die you progress AND get to see different games" is cool, it's like an all-you-can-eat buffet of small games that would probably not work as a full thing, but are fun for like a minute, and i swear to god the graphics look bad but it's a specific kind of bad that is so hard to recreate i'm 90% sure it was done on purpose, ALSO there's been a sequel in the works for a long while which has kind of the same graphical style except more polished, shit looks good
I'd love to see a more traditional non-visual novel game use this concept, where death is never the end, just a different path! It'd be one of the most replayable games ever if done right!
It reminded me of a game called Vivian Clark which also features a minigame-like compilation. The graphical style is similar too. The game is hidden in another game called Soda Drinker Pro. It really struck a chord with me due to how unconventional the existence and gameplay of the game was
It’s like the Bulgarian Treasure Planet of indie PC games. Super duper weird and nonsensical, and I won’t say it’s objectively good, but it is my favorite movie nonetheless.
Guy who made revenge of the sunfish is apparently working on a sequel, he has a BUNCH of other games he's made too, but man. You can't forget Revenge of the Sunfish, it's been etched into my memory for over 10 years.
I was worried from the intro that there would be Hylics slander at some point, but I'm relieved that there isn't. That series is one of the most bizarre, unique, and fun that I've experienced in a long time.
Hi! I'm the owner of the Jazzuo website you linked in the description. Great video dude! It was a fun watch, though I wanted to point out a few inaccuracies. SH was released in 2003 and not 2002 and Jazzuo made nearly all of the games we have archived on Game Maker, not Adobe Flash. Only 3 of his games are Flash games and we have a dedicated category for them on the site! Regadless, nice video dude! :D
game dev now is like how bands were in the myspace era. 99.99999% posers who didn't even play an instrument but still wanted to say they were in a band and had a myspace
Goblet Grotto being bizarro and weird isn't entirely suprising coming from the developer, thecatamites, who is responsible for one of the original cult "quirky Indie RPGs", Space Funeral. There's similar elements shared there too, like the scratchy artstyle and eschewing of traditional RPG mechanics (The game opens by telling you its invented a hip new mechanic that skips all of the battles for you). That dev is an interesting one for sure. Most recently they're finishing off the "Of the Killer" series of games, which are all short but feature a nosy child journeying off to strange and hostile lands in search of compelling mysteries. On the topic of weird Indie games, I would love to see a video chronicling the entire story of the demented ARG that resulted in the release and discovery of Frog Fractions 2. I think it would make for an entertaining and wild video!
Video game documentary channel Noclip did a two-parter on the Frog Fractions series, with the spoilery bits in the second part... they even did FMV bits pretending to be edutainment to keep up the illusion
Absolutely love the Of The Killer games, the 2d sprites/3d world reminded me so much of that, but I didn't know it was the same dev! That's super cool.
Revenge of the Sunfish is one of my classic fave indie games. It hits my spot of weird that no other game has been able to emulate. Not even cruelty squad
Ecco the Dolphin isn't just good graphics. The Sega CD soundtrack is some killer New Age vibes. You can even just pop it in a CD drive and rip it or play it since it's just a music CD for the most part.
Omg I thought "sexy hiking" was like a dream I had, I remember playing it waay back in the day but I never found it again, this was quite the nostalgia trip
I've actually heard of Dontrel the Dolphin and Revenge of the Sunfish, mostly from old TH-camrs that are no longer active. The former feels like it could have been the Sonichu of gaming, minus the complete lunacy of Chris-Chan, while the latter just feels like pure trolling.
I didn't know this! I've played hours and hours of Goblet Grotto but there's still stuff I've never seen except in screenshots. It's such a surprisingly massive game thats quite easy to get turned around in. That's really neat that you could find it ::- )
Can we talk real quick about how Rpgmaker is the goat of indie games? So much good shit came outta that. Lisa The Painful, Lisa The Pointless, Lisa The Hopeful, Lisa The Timeless, Lisa The Unbreakable, Oneshot, Off, Funger 1 and 2, Hylics, Ib, Corpse Party, and Yume Nikki. All while being the cheapest and most basic out of all the game engines?

Aye, it brings me an odd comfort knowing that the Nintendo E Shops were always weird. The things I’ve seen on “Recently Released” from Nintendo switch… haunt me…
I can't tell you how cool it was to see Revenge of the Sunfish. I played that game years and years ago. We may not dare speak of it, but I'm still glad it exists! It's surprising that I've played a game that's on your list! Also: "Who doesn't like Dolphins? People who have no soul." Yeeeeahhh, Dolphins are actually pretty cursed creatures once you learn about their mating habits.
You know, the fact that the more human-like creatures in matter of behavior (dolphins, orcas, chimps) are also the most cursed really doesn't help with my misanthropy...
Oh man, Revenge of the Sunfish is a game that has just lived in the back of my mind that creeps up in thoughts now and again ever since I saw AzuriteReaction do a full playthrough of it SOOO many years ago. He's also how I learned about LSD dream emulator. I know this was meant to be a video about weird as fuck indie games but it really just sent me on a nostalgia trip! I wonder how Azurite is doing anyway? Hope he's well.
Seriously, I can't recommend Vivian Clark enough, it immediately reminded me of revenge of the sunfish when I first played it. You need to buy Soda Drinker Pro and go through the black door on the second level to play Vivian Clarke, this is real
Seeing Revenge of the Sunfish again hit me with so much nostalgia it was like getting run over by a train I was OBSESSED with that game when i was younger because of how bizarre it was Part of me though i made the whole thing up for years afterwards until this video reminded me of its existence
Glad people still remember Revenge of the Sunfish. It’s truly a one of a kind experience that no other game can replicate. Except for the sequel but that’s been in development for like 15 years so yeah…
I'm pretty sure the first one is ironic, and if that is the case I have to give huge props to the dev specifically for the art/design. It's a lot harder than you realize to purposefully make something look bad or as if it's from 2010 and was a 12 y/os first ambitious project. All the little grainy details and white outlines and overly-saturated colors and weirdly overlapping drawings and great imo
I _really_ hope you're right about it being ironic, because everything about it screams Chris Chan 2. And we all know what happened to that... thing. If it's real, then I hope the worst thing that comes from its creator is absolutely nothing. Assuming the game is a serious attempt at art, it certainly won't go anywhere because it's awful, and the specific type of autistic visionaries in calls to mind usually aren't too keen on taking criticism or feedback. Someone else said the creator actually speaks his own made-up language, so I'm not very optimistic that he's of sound mind.
I'm surprised no one has really mentioned how funny it is that the engine that the pizza game was made on crashes if more than 8 sounds are playing at once. That's incredible
There were lots of teenagers with a strange sense of humour creating games with the Game Maker Engine back in the day. In that community creativity was always valued higher than the quality of the games. Kimberly Kubus' Johnny series being a good example. A lot of the strangeness in these games can be understood if you see them as quirky jokes made for their friends. I used to make odd games just to make my friends laugh back in the day. But it's always been the outsiders that make the most interesting games, just look at Matt Smith making Manic Miner in his bedroom on the ZX spectrum back in the 80s.
As someone trying to develop a video game, I one day can only pray that a game I make comes up in a video like this. I adore weird games and the utter bafflement people appraise them with
I was a fan of Jazzuo's stuff back in the day. Pretty sure he made that later than 2002, and he used Gamemaker to make it, not Flash. He also made another game with the same character called Sexy Hands where the goal is to throw balls into a hoop.
Funny pizza land is supposed to have an intro cutscene. It normally doesn't just drop you into the game, but maybe the game is too old at this point to work properly
I just went and played Revenge of the Sunfish because of this and holy shit that sure was something, I don't even know if it was good or bad, it was just *SOMETHING* in all possible meanings of that word.
So so so glad to see goblet grotto talked about. I fucking love goblet grotto. Truly worth checking out. It's a maze of madness. It kinda defies explanation but everyone should try it, which is easy because it's free. Favorite areas include dog purgatory, crime town, and the skeleton dojo
Does anyone remember Xbox Live Indie Games for the 360? Games had similar lack of QC issues... quality was actually from pretty good to real garbage. I wasn't there for the insanity of Wii U shop games, but some of the XBL indies remind me of that. There's so much lost media in there since that Xbox store has been long removed.
34:56 Oh my fucking god, MagicMush has unlocked a lost memory, i remember playing this game with my brother years ago and remember this exact scene with the keyboard but never knew what the game was called, and it finally came back to me all these years later
Goblet Grotto playing it fast and loose with the Yume Nikke vibes, I can dig it. I was honestly hoping that Revenge of the Sunfish would be on this list when you started to show off weird games with an artsy(?) vibe, you did not disappoint, weirdest part definitely is it having an actual structure at the end with an actually relevant ending honestly.
The scariest part of funny pizza land for me is the fact that the cutscene we saw (which was the weird ass tv one) the uncensored version actually shows a guys head being blow off, and the fact that confuses me is i can’t even tell if its real. This has both horrified me and made me curious at the same time. (EDIT! Okay i now know its fake, thanks for letting me know y’all, sorry I overreacted 😭)
It looked like it was the (in)famous exploding head scene from a 1981 movie called "Scanners". At least, I hope so, since that would mean it's indeed fake.
the video with the guys getting head blown off is practical effects from some sorta movie, BUT the video played before it with the bullfight i think might be real. can’t say for sure though
It's good that you included Revenge of the Sunfish Gotta include Revenge of the Sunfish Gotta have Revenge of the Sunfish Gotta play Revenge of the Sunfish
I had a slight obsession/ great fascination with Revenge of the Sunfish when I was way younger. Since I couldn't play the game in any way myself, I'd just spend hours watching TH-camrs play it, sometimes on repeat just to try to piece together what was going on and how the game worked. The added bonus to that, I suppose, was getting to see numerous other people's reactions to it, which was also pretty fun.
I accept Ecco the Dolphin for it's faults, but there is still a lot to love about it. The sprite work is fantastic, the music is really good & the story is a trip.
Never thought Id see a TH-camr like MagicMush talk about something like Goblet Grotto Im mad you didn’t even mention Space Funeral when talking about Goblet Grotto

Small correction, Jazzuo's games were not developed in flash. At the very least, most of them weren't. They're most if not all GameMaker 8.1. This much is obvious from the graphics alone, but SH (being the only Jazzuo game I have played) Iliterally has the "Made in GameMaker" splash screen on start up.
This really got on my nerves lol, with the repeated use of "flash games" to describe them. It's like calling a game developed in Unreal a goldsrc game.
It's surprising to think that the Dontrel games are now considered Lost Media, but you couldn't pay a single living soul to go out and attempt to find it again unless Shmorky somehow manages to unearth it from whatever computer Gaming Garbage was putting through hell back in the day EDIT: What's the RPG at 11:10 and the one after it? I quite enjoy RPGs myself and these look mighty interesting.
It's a small thing, but I really like the way you worded "these games could only come from the minds of their creators and no one else". I'm a new viewer and I was worried you'd give the old "lmao this guy would have had to be on drugs to make this" and I hate that sentiment so much. These kinds of games are hidden gems in their own way (even if the gem in question is a brick of lead) and I appreciate that you understand that too. Good work on this one!
I can see why, the concept is very similar to Yume Nikki in that it’s all about wandering and experiencing the world and the things that happen in it, not so much about any specific goal. Though admittedly in Yume Nikki there technically ARE some things to do and an ending you can get to. Goblin Grotto certainly could’ve benefitted from having something for the player to do.
I’m surprised that so many people are unaware of Sexy Hiking and its role in Getting Over It. Bennett Foddy himself talks about how he the game inspired him in Getting Over It. Was I the only person to actually listen to him while I was playing the game?
These indie games are truly wild & I have heard of Dontrel Dolphin, Funny Pizza Land & Revenge of the Sunfish before. Also, new MagicMush video & I love this channel, so it's a win win! EDIT: There are definitely other oddball indie games. There is a 90s MS-DOS game engine known as RSD Game-Maker that was sold to the general public & it has led to crazy stuff like Mister Spiff series, the Dummy Duck series, Blip!, the Badman trilogy, Gary Acord's wacky games, The Bounerim, etc. It's freakin' insane & I love it!
Ah, absurdistcore games. I've been ao fascinated with these games aince my buddy Eric showed me Revenge of the Sunfish around 2010. My friend and I planned (and are still planning) on doing a whole analysis series on this chart we found for a couple of years now, so I've done so much fucking research on them. Most of the batshit nature of the style comes from the late Kim Kubus, who was a good friend of jinxtengu, creator of Sunfish. Kubus even created a manifesto about creating deliberately terrible games. I would absolutely love to see you cover more of these, there is SO MUCH to discover. Stuff like other creations by thecatamites and lilithzone, Space Funeral and Crypr Worlds, respectively. There's also the prolific magicdweedoo, who has put out some of the most genuinely creative absurdist games out there, wainstop, a collective whose most well-known member is pilotredsun, and the granddaddies of bizarro parody jrpg games, Tales of Games, who released the greatest and most canon game of all time, Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden.
I think Sexy Hiking was inspired by AVGN episode 3: Karate Kid, where he says "It's like if I made a game where you had to get over a cliff and it's nearly impossible, but once you do, you beat the game"
"The Museum of Dead Wifery" reminds to Majorariatto Museum, a game made by Alva Majo (a gamedev who made games like Pineapple on Pizza). About that game: is like that game, but more focused on being a museum of the video game studio of said dev (Majorariatto), with pictures of events he went to and about the games he has made, among other things. It also has its peculiar secrets (but you can't watch a whole episode of a TV series from the 90's).
Goblet Grotto might actually be a pretty kick ass work of gaming art, with a bit more effort towards making it more challenging or having it be nonsense in a way that is intriguing and fun, as opposed to frustrating.
hiking game was a 100% insperation to getting over it, there's even a line in game that metions how the creator got their main inspiration from that game due to it's nature of being a hard climbing game
Bennett goes into more detail about Jazzuo and his games beyond just he made a hard climbing game lol, literally just look up the narration on TH-cam, it’s right at the beginning

That would explain why the cutscenes didn't play. Some games of that era used codecs that are no longer used. Thief 1 and 2 have this problem.
If it's actually from that era, I think that's incredible! Funny Pizza Land looks like one of the many modern games desperately trying to _replicate_ the style of 3D graphics from that era, but for it to be the genuine article would be astounding.
As a game dev myself, it’s kinda baffling how Nintendo somehow makes their development toolkit the hardest thing to acquire, but yet they always manage to give it to the devs with the lowest skill and passion
Seriously; there’s a reason why nobody talks about the Switch EShop compared to how beloved 3DS and Wii shops were
Reminds me of Bob's game.
Well the 3DS and Wii U eShops had their fair share of shovelware too, it's just that the era those existed in was kind of a golden age for indie and smaller budget games.
the older era nintendo eshops had slop too though
older slop just tends to look less shit than newer slop
Especially when compared to Xbox Live Indie Games which had similar stuff of low caliber. Their XNA framework was free for anyone to make games on PC (there was still a fee for publishing to Xbox) and hosted a community forum that was mostly run by fans. I saw a bunch of stolen assets in those games because there were very loose standards, so you'd mostly just turned down for technical reasons (for instance, if your game doesn't detect controllers plugged in).
What does this have to do with the video?
Ok but Goblet Grotto is genuinely gorgeous

revenge of the sunfish is one of my favorite games and im not even being ironic or anything, the premise of "if you die you progress but if you don't die you progress AND get to see different games" is cool, it's like an all-you-can-eat buffet of small games that would probably not work as a full thing, but are fun for like a minute, and i swear to god the graphics look bad but it's a specific kind of bad that is so hard to recreate i'm 90% sure it was done on purpose, ALSO there's been a sequel in the works for a long while which has kind of the same graphical style except more polished, shit looks good
I'd love to see a more traditional non-visual novel game use this concept, where death is never the end, just a different path! It'd be one of the most replayable games ever if done right!

Sadly sequel will never release
I'm pretty sure the first one is ironic, and if that is the case I have to give huge props to the dev specifically for the art/design. It's a lot harder than you realize to purposefully make something look bad or as if it's from 2010 and was a 12 y/os first ambitious project. All the little grainy details and white outlines and overly-saturated colors and weirdly overlapping drawings and great imo
I mean… dude’s named Dontrell.
"What kind of enemies are these? Evil triangles? The level geometry is wild and out of control!"
Heh heh.
But it's always been the outsiders that make the most interesting games, just look at Matt Smith making Manic Miner in his bedroom on the ZX spectrum back in the 80s.
the art style of Museum of Dead Wifery reminds me of Worlds Online, which is likely what it was inspired by

I was absolutely convinced that Goblet Grotto was by the dev of Yume Nikki 3D, but it's just a similar style.
Man Revenge of the Sunfish takes me back, used to play that game to kill time back in high school. Love that game.
