**Tony:** Ey, Vinny, you heard 'bout this guy, they call him the Fixer?
**Vinny:** Yeah, Tony, I heard. Supposed to be some kinda magician, making things happen in Amerston Street.
**Tony:** Yeah? I gotta meet this guy, Vinny. Got a little situation, ya know?
**Vinny:** What kinda situation, Tony? You mixin' with the wrong crowd again?
**Tony:** Nah, nah, Vinny, nothin' like that. Just got this business thing, need a little help, you know? Someone said the Fixer's the go-to guy for this.
**Vinny:** Oh, business, huh? You gotta be careful, Tony. The Fixer ain't your regular consultant, capisce?
**Tony:** I know, I know. But I heard he's the guy who can make stuff disappear or appear, you get me?
**Vinny:** Yeah, yeah, like some kinda magician for wise guys. But you gotta be cautious, Tony. Amerston Street ain't no walk in the park.
**Tony:** I ain't scared, Vinny. Just gotta make a connection, set up a meet, you know?
**Vinny:** Alright, Tony, but if you're playin' with fire, don't come cryin' to me when things get hot.
**Tony:** Vinny, I got this. I'm gonna find the Fixer, lay out my cards, and see if he's got the magic touch.
**Vinny:** Just be careful, Tony. And if things go south, I got a cousin who knows a guy... you know how it goes.

Hello Neighbor being considered a horror game is a joke that writes itself. Literally all Mr. Peterson does is make you leave. Doesn't even call the police, no matter how many times you break into his house. For the main antagonist, he's a lot more chill than most people would be about having his home invaded.

The funniest part about the Game Theory vs. Hello Neighbor beef is that MatPat still makes fun of Hello Neighbor to this day. In MatPat's goodbye video he just posted, he casually mentioned how he knew that one of his successors would be right for the job after he read the entire Hello Neighbor book series in case they ever did a Hello Neighbor video. It's like learning about the Hello Neighbor lore was viewed as the least desirable job at The Theorists.

Baldi's Basics is so funny because even once the "horror" part comes into view, it's still so obviously a shitpost. There are whiteboards with "Insert Lore Here" and "Sorry, forgot to write a story" written on them, its take on the FNAF-style "drop lore on you when you die" concept is to flash a fidget spinner on-screen sometimes after you die, and the true ending you get for sucking at math really hard is just some random guy saying "There's no hidden lore, I'm not a person trapped in the game, you should just delete it". Yet the desire to milk popularity was so strong that you had youtubers trying to analyze actual lore out of it when it's clearly all just meant to be silly nonsense making fun of the kinds of low-effort crap people churn out trying to be the next horror fad.

    • @henrynelson9301

there is another slender filmed just called slender, it was a cheap found footage horror film. However since Slenderman is copyrighted, they could never actually say the word Slenderman nor actually have him appear, so its basically like 2 hours of really unlikable characters harassing a woman who thinks her kids were abducted by Slenderman. This gets the point where our MCs decided to dress up as him and traumatize this woman in her kids old school, the film ends with everyone being implied killed. It is a really REALLY bad horror film

To be fair to matpat, when hello neighbor was in the alpha stages they did put a bunch of references to "Faust" and the number 666 in the promo art. They basically got their time in the spotlight from promising lore, and they didn't deliver. It was supposed to be a cool game about a clever AI that was programmed to learn from your last attempts.

Slenderman being in this video has made me realize one thing: All the fads today are INCREDIBLY short lived, lasting a month or two. But Slenderman lasted for years before it unceremoniously bit the dust. All the older fads seemed to be long lasting, which made me remember two more fads: Downfall parodies and Angry German Kid parodies. both taking foreign made products in a foreign language, and adding fake subtitles to make them say different things than what was actually said. And all of them really went deep, making their own universes and everything. Especially Angry German Kid, whose original video was such a convincing fake that it basically ruined the creator's life. And both of those fads lasted for longer than today's fads.

I love how Vinny played Baldi completely unaware of the phenomenon it would become, and especially with him being the FIRST major internet personality to play it. Vinesauce just has this pattern of being at the forefront of popular memes or games, but with their name still being very niche and only recognized by few. Of course, Vinny has been getting more recognition in the past few years with him collaborating with more mainstream creators, but people like Joel for example rarely get out of their internet bubbles unless it's a very specific event, like Jerma's House Flipper competitions.

@@malmart0 as someone who found the game early into it's life, it's mainly just due to the updates - they really alienated a lot of older players like myself and a lot of what originally made the game enjoyable got steadily lost
just off the top of my head:
      - switching from dlcs to in-game mobile currencies
      - completely gutting public lobbies and ruining the experience as a public host in general (this one i take extreme issue with as their reasoning was "in order to protect kids we've made lobby names randomly generated from a pool of words" but all it did was make it impossible to know what you're joining - thus making the issue worse)
      - the artstyle overhaul making the game just generally "safer" and more sanitized (kill animations and sounds were changed for example)
      - a shoehorned in friend system that does absolutely nothing it set out to do
      - honestly just a steadily removal of the vibe it originally had, it took itself and it's concept much more seriously in contrast to the art but all that really remains now of the original vision is the thing-inspired main menu music
      - the new method of cosmetics just overall, which went from simple and themed to just . whatever the fuck they feel like at any given time to the point you could hide your character's color entirely (that they then band-aid fixed by adding a color under name setting)
i loved the game in it's early stages and was super happy when it got popular and could get more friends in on it but after awhile the direction they went just didn't fit for me and a lot of others, and we moved on to other games (unfortunate spacemen was great for a time but sadly it remains a much more niche title despite predating au)

The new level takes a new spin on horror that wasn’t really seen in slender games back then, relying more on psychological horror than just jumpscares. Funny story too regarding the toy models. In a podcast/interview, I think it's LS Mark's podcast thing, he mentioned a story where he looked at his GOTTA SWEEP model in his office/room and he just thought to himself something along the lines of, "I just tricked a company into making a model of a broom". And it was just one of those moments he had of like, realizing that.
I'm fairly certain the image for that broom is from an amazon listing too.
Apparently in that interview too, the dev was at one point was approached by Matpat himself (somehow) and when like, getting advice for his game or something, Matpat suggested making Baldi have a release schedule like Bendy or Poppy, like chapter based release schedule for I'm gonna assume maximum relevancy and the dev didn't do that instead wanting release the game in its entirety.

But who I'm kidding, it's clear that most of the ppl that jumped on the mascot horror trend do not care about creating a game that will endure the test of time and only want to string the maximum of ppl along to sell some merch that will end in a landfill someday.

Bruh I was a part of that Kickstarter and they STILL haven't shipped, or even surveyed things like shirt sizes most of the backer rewards yet. Luckily they do provide updates on development and kickstarter progress every few months, the last one in September. On the bright side, I kinda like how the fandom died down. That way when the full game eventually releases the fandom would have matured by then. Kinda like the Undertale/Deltarune and FNaF fandoms.

That kickstarter had "scope creep" written all over it. Really seems like they just threw random stuff onto the stretch goals without expecting that they'd ever hit them - on top of the already full game they had planned, they made so much money that they're now obligated to add 35 extra weeks (a total of 105 extra playable songs on top of cutscenes, characters, etc), online multiplayer with a sharing network, ten extra playable characters, mobile builds, and fully animated cutscenes - on top of all the merch that was promised as backer rewards too. Trying to make a game like that is a fate I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy

Man I completely forgot about the Slenderman stabbing till you brought it up. Actually don't remember her surviving, so it's good to know I was wrong. Initially I thought you were talking about that awful movie they made about Slenderman, but yeah the stabbing was much worse. It's crazy that something like Slenderman, mostly just a popular internet story, could have such a serious effect to real people in the real world. When someone is actually harmed, or worse, killed because of something most people don't take seriously, it's kind of a blow to the face. This thing we joked about, made videogames about, made songs & animations about, actually lead to someone nearly dying. Scary stuff.
I know in the video you say that FNAF isn't technically a "fad" because it's still running today, but personally I think it was & still is. Yes it's still very present today, especially after last years movie & Security Breach's DLC, but popularity really peaked around the third game & since then it's ever-presence in the background of the internet has basically completely faded away. In 2014-2016, you couldn't escape FNAF, it was everywhere, but after then most people lost interest, the games got stale & repetitive, & today while it's still relevant, that's mainly because of memes & whatnot online of people making fun of it. The merchandise was being rushed out to stores, a new game came out every 6 months or so, & the quality of products took a backseat as quantity became series creator Scott Cawthon's main concern. Instead of actually liking what he made like the creator of Baldi's Basics, he ran with it to ride the fad train till nobody cared anymore, & man did he. Within the first year he had plushies & toys & figurines & fake Lego, etc. etc. etc.
Lastly, I really think most of these fad games are typically bad. I never thought FNAF was particularly good, even when it was popular & I wanted to play it myself. The simple concept means replaying it get's boring quickly, because there isn't much there besides pressing buttons & looking at the cameras. Others like Bendy & The Ink Machine were just collectathons, hell most of these are really collectathons, like Baldi's Basics they don't do anything interesting with their material, instead making a game that's supposed to be a fad rather than just making a genuinely good game. Poppy's Playtime & Garden of BanBan are great examples of games made just to be a fad. They served no other purpose, & within a month their names were already off the grid. Garden of BanBan has lingered a bit, but really from what I've seen it's complete garbage.

FNAF really isnt a good game just a cheap basic point and click game with basic jump scares added in to be "Scary" but really it isnt its more a shock rather then a real scare! honestly I think it became popular because people like Markiplier were playing it and fans of channels like that want to be just like them so they just play it and kind of force themselves to enjoy it so they fit in. I was like that with Slender so I get why they do it but that only lasted like a month before I got bored of it.

It gets to a point where I can't even tell if he's actually enjoying playing these games, or if he's just playing them to stay in some loop that doesn't matter that much. It feels like the latter, and it makes me sad to see my friend fail to do what he says what he wants to do because he's trying to keep up with fads. I dunno. It's weird.
