    I'm amazed at how much work it took to get the safe apart. You turned a boat anchor into a very usable and good-looking safe. Unlike a lot of ladies, Ginger probably enjoys going to Home Depot. 👍

    That is a neat old safe. Nice job on the retrofit. The company that I work for, Diebold, bought what was left of Mosler after their bankruptcy. I work on these old safes, regularly, and I actually had to drill a larger one open (after a lock failure) just this week. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

    Wow! It's a very rare occasion to see an old antique mosler product in private hands. My nine-to-five is I have to install any accessory a bank wants usually safes and ATMs. Mosler is one of the kings when it comes to safes. Also fun little tidbit I have a friend in Chicago who has a walk in fire-safe in their basement, the house was built after the Chicago fire... Yup it's that old lol but the giant exterior safe door is made by mosler and inside it is a little safe in the wall and that is the exact safe you have sir👌 Also I have to add you tackled that like a pro, damn near exactly how we do it👍

      @@sixtyfiveford that is a "hand change" combination lock. Resetting the combo is very easy. Just be sure that you log any "offset" in the numbers on the "wheels" and the actual number that you stop at on the dial (ex. if the "wheel" is at 65 and the dial needs to stop on 66, add 1 number to the new number on the "wheel"). They can be a bit finicky but not too difficult to reset if you are careful. Nice job.

  • @richardclifton4120
    @richardclifton4120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1st of all, it looked great when done and reminded me of a Wells Fargo Safe you would see on a train getting robbed in the Wild Wild West when you finished it, and those plug welds will be a whole lot harder to drill out than any rivet would. a set of wheels on the bottom wouldn't hurt either. Put the combination of the safe on the "inside" that way the next owner won't have to decipher it. Could be a hundred years from now, so put a picture of the restoration team and a DVD of the process inside too. It will be a Time Capsule to document its history.
    Use what you have, but the fire rating for it would be higher if you used something like "Ceramic Fiber Thermal Insulation Board". This is what I plan on using when I build an outdoor shelter for an emergency generator. Enjoy the rest of your winter.

    Always learn something from your videos, thanks! Have you ever had to weld up a worn slip yoke on a transmission or transfer case? Reason why I ask is that some yokes are no longer made and a repair is the only option. I figure that if anyone can fix a worn yoke, you can!

    • @mytkc66atbat25
      @mytkc66atbat25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sixtyfiveford yes, after 200,000 plus miles there is a groove worn in. I have seen shafts built up with spray welding, mig welding and tig welding, then ground down to original od. I am concerned about the grain structure around the weld zone particularly for tig. I don't want a stress fracture to spoil my day!

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rather than weld, most folks at home use a speedi-sleeve to effect a groove repair. Going that route is usually the quickest and least costly. Another potential repair on some parts is to machine for an oversize seal... but that repair is not possible on all parts and you also have to come up with the seal. Rather than attempt to weld on cast or forged parts which may or may not work, I prefer to prep and build up the damaged area with nickel plating. Then all it takes to complete the repair is to machine or grind back down to the original finish size. Obviously, you have to be able to conduct the plating and machining ops but to me it's worth it. You get the best and longest lasting repair with no complications. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧🇺🇸

    • @mytkc66atbat25
      @mytkc66atbat25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaxGiganteum all good points. The slip yoke is 6 inches long and the wear surface for the seal is 4 inches from the end. This makes a speedi sleeve a tough proposition. Did look into hard chrome and nickel plating, however in SoCal the enviros have made that a difficult choice. Appreciate the response, thanks!

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My experience is you don't need industrial chrome... nickel works just fine. Unless your part originally had a hard chrome surface, I wouldn't give it a second thought. As far as how to get it done, there is the bona fide plating shop... then there's the home brew folks that can do just as good of a job. I've been around and in both environments and success depends on one thing: does the guy doing it know what he's doing? That's the catch. If the speedi-sleeve option isn't looking viable, I'd price out nickel plating and finish machining at a regular shop unless you've got friends that can lend a hand. I would also attempt to find a local home brew hobbyist that might be willing to help. They're usually far cheaper than a regular shop (sometimes free) and they often like the challenge. If you've got the time, you might do some research online to see if anyone is nearby that can help. Look for the hobbyist groups. Another option for machining are any local trade or technical schools with a machining program. High schools too. The instructors usually love it when someone walks in the door with a unique project as it gives the students real world job shop experience. Mine did when I was in a machining program many decades ago. Yes, I did a couple of walk-ins myself though what I got were all fairly easy. One that I remember was the task of re-machining the ways of a mini-lathe... that guy was tickled pink because he figured it was a lost cause. He'd almost just tossed the whole thing in the scrap bin! How did it turn out? Looked like new, not that I was surprised. All I thought at first was that a few of the dings or gouges were too deep but they all cleaned up. Anyway, I'm reminded of something else - automotive programs at trade or technical schools. Junior & community colleges often have them. They too often like having folks show up with unique projects for students to deal with... some online research and a few phone calls might get you what you need for free or for a small "donation" to the program. It's up to you to look into those things, of course, but know this - it might take a lot of time to get things done unless you already know who to talk to and the time of year is right. Students only spend so much time in the labs... and there are only so many days per year class is in session. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧👨🏻‍🎓

    I’ve got a friend his father used to keep three $400,000 in cash around. He was Amish. A couple of his hands who were not English waited for him to be home one day and took four of his own log chains out of his shop, wrote them through his house , wrapped it around his big safe and pulled it through the whole house and out the door. The safe was never recovered.

    Goodness the damage that must’ve caused carrying that through the whole house down the hallway and out the front door must have been very expensive .

    Cool stuff Moe. I've seen some really nice pinstriping on antique safes-even gold leaf. Any idea when you might get back around to working on your 65 Ford? Thanks for posting.

      I was thinking about pin stripping this in gold but wasn't sure I wanted to add hours to the project. I need the move the 65 so it's in my way, then it will take priority.

      It went from 1600 lb down to 350 lb. It feels like a lead anchor. I moved it down my stairs into the basement. I'm not sure how I'm going to easily get it back up without at least two guys.

    One of your finest fabrication’s to date Moe…well done, think I would have put my own time capsule or at least welded your name inside as the fabricator and a picture of ginger too. Concrete might have made a decent repurposed backyard pizza oven.

      Asbestos concrete is for strength(pipes, sheeting, etc) when making thin products. This is just concrete for weight.
