After Thoughts about the Video: I really don't intend anyone to build this. It's just functional art for me. Full throttle and this thing pulls 7500 watts( 25,575 BTU) which is a fair amount but needed if you wanted to use this outside while you're working working. There are no safety controls but after thinking I do plan on installing a buzzer. It will be a simple thermal switch(NTE thermal disc style) located in the top next to the control panel. If it overheats to lets say 160F it'll loudly buzz until it is unplugged and or cools down. This would really only happen if the fan stopped working. I hope you guys enjoyed watching me make this as I had a blast... Build time: 10-12hrs

How are you going to cook your food?
Elements vary greatly by model...even if they are the same size they vary somewhat. 8 Inch Surface elements pull about 1800 to around 2400 Watts each depending on the burners from what I can remember. A Bake element in an oven is normally around 2400- 2500 Watts and the Broil element is around 3400 Watts. The bake and broil elements also vary.
We always called those types of burners 'Calrod' burners or Calrod heaters it was the premium trade name that was patented kind of like Kleenex for tissues but I can't tell you what mfg made the name 'Calrod' ...sorry

That’s awesome! I work for GE. That GE emblem has a name. They call it the meatball. Every once in a while we can find stickers around the plant. If I come across some I’ll get in touch and send them to you if you like.
Meatball; I had no idea. What a catchy name. Part of the fun of doing these projects to learning little odd facts like this. Vintage stickers would be neat.

You’re not wrong. I use a 1958 Caloric gas oven that has been passed down through 3 generations in my family. It still works like new. It is SO heavy compared to any newer ovens. And I’m pretty sure it’s gonna outlast me.
Survivorship bias
Two years ago I went to a farm auction. Out in the lawn lineup was a chest freezer, the logo read "International Harvester", and the data tag on the back read "Manufacture Date 1948" I forget the month. They had it plugged in and running like a champ😲

Love your builds the most amazing thing is that you had a vintage can of Appliance Avocado Green on the shelf. That's grandpa level hobbyist stuff there.
What a project! One thing that might interest you is that those Calrods (burners) list for about $125 each on some vintage appliance parts sites. I can tell from your serial number that the stove was made in our plant in October of 1966, about 8 years before I started working there. If you can find a cabinet mounted dishwasher from that early era they will have three or four painted steel sheets hidden behind the door panel. It was so you could change from Brown, Harvest Gold, Avocado Green, or White as you bought new appliances or changed flooring or cabinet colors. They're heavy gauge and over 2 1/2 feet square. GE hired a company for a couple mil to "modernize" their logo. The logo that you and your doggy drew had been around since Edison founded the company. Look at a recent logo and see if you can spot the change that cost millions to "redesign".
You do great work. I should warn you that those Calrods should not be allowed to glow red for any real length of time. They are simply a thin nichrome wire centered in a tube with powdered porcelain glass packed around it as an insulator. The stove came with a warning about making sure that your pan covers the burner so its heat is drawn off by the cookware and food inside it and doesn't sit there glowing and burning out.
Don't want to give you any crazy ideas, but that self cleaning feature will heat the inside of the oven to 880 degrees F. Think you could do anything with that???
It did seem a little sad to see this old workhorse, thats lasted 60 years get ripped appart, but, that heater looked fantastic, i love that retro look.
You could also use the oven part of it for doing powder coating.
It'll live on way longer now. The guy I got it from had it for free for 6 months and never got a single call.
I showed my wife when you were starting to form the side panel into a tube. "Does he have a wife to ask if he is going to blow up the place?" Then when you showed the finished unit, "wow, now it doesn't look like it is going to blow up."

Great project! That looks like something my dad would have done. I grew up in his shop working on appliances. That old GE brings back memories. I've worked on tons of them.
i worked on appliances for over 35 years. you are a man after my own heart! never throw any thing away! i am sure i have a brand new switch for that burner!
Appliance guy here too... 30+ years. I have only seen about 3 or 4 of those models in my life and this video is one of them. I even did installs and have only seen that many. They were not that popular where I live as almost everything is Gas.
Good job! The cool thing about electric heat is that you get out what you put in. Electric heat is almost %100 efficient. Of course you gotta buy the juice. Back when they banned incandessent light bulbs nobody mentioned that in addition to lighting the house, a 100 Watt bulb also puts out EXACTLY 100 Watts of HEAT! A well unsulated room with 2 100 Watt old school bulbs is dry and comfy. LED bulbs not so much..

That's pretty sweet. I might be the only person who still likes that vintage Avocado color. It's the hallmark of that era. I don't think anything comes with a schematic anymore. 👍🏼

Your approach to show people they can use general common sense at the end of the vid is appreciated. I'd guess we are close in age range, and times were better/different when we were growing up IMHO at least.
When I turned my 1949 GE refrigerator into a smoker I did the same with the switches, badges and pcs and parts. This is a really cool build! 😊

I know you will save the wire but that is amazing wire. I worked for 35 years in the appliance repair field. Those wires will withstand amazing heat abuse forever almost. If the wire terminations are bad they will burn off but if the terminations are Good then the wire holds up amazingly. Good videos.

I had one of those in my 70's single wide mobile home when I first moved in! It was gas and not electric but looked the same. Don't think it was up to safety specs but it lasted long enough!

I work in a 60’s era power plant and the older equipment just has a different craftsmanship than a lot of the newer equipment. Basic routine maintenance and it’ll run forever. Cool to see this old GE getting repurposed!

Completely awesome! The average oven with the heating element and all the stove top burners going draws 38 amps. 50 amp circuit at 80% load is about 38 amps. Your average Tesla level two home charger draws the same amount of power. This sure beats the smell of those nasty salamander kerosene heaters on a job site! Nice build!

Hey, Moe! I got a free oil-filled electric space heater recently and I really like it better than the small electric heaters with fans I’ve been using. I did some research into issues with these and it’s almost always an easy electrical problem, plus parts are dirt cheap, interchangeable and available. It looks like a lot of people toss them instead of repairing, so I imagine you could find plenty to work on and try out. I’ve asked on Freecycle here on Cape Cod but no offers yet, so this morning I put a request into the weekly eList I send out to my baking business customers. Little by little I’m decreasing my fuel oil bill.

This has got to be one of the best reengineered applications I've seen. And super relevant to me right now as my garage is not heated and it sucks, I keep looking at natural gas ceiling mounted units but don't want to pony up the dough.
