    What seems like a simple job based on other videos can be a real pain if you don't do a few things just right. I could do this job again in 5 hours. Took me two days fighting to learn the hard way.
    odd tools: 1/4 socket extenders (a couple of them), 1/4 socket knuckle, cam adjust tool, breaker bar, air or high powered electric impact driver (to break or even torque the crank bolt), large binder clips

      Went good, my belt did not have marks so I marked my old used a small impact gun to remove the crankshaft bolt, build a “make shift” holder for my HM balancer for re reinstall and final torque. I also used the 1/4” extension trick you did and got’r done! 👍🏻

    The mark on the bottom is not tdc. You have to look inside the crank teeth for the mark. Should be a dimple marked on the tooth.

    Good stuff.... And thank you for sharing brotha - SERIOUSLY. I mean it. Indeed, you saved me some hours. Hope one day I can get you back somehow. What helped me the most was getting the Timing Belt on. I had everything off already before watching this video, and couldn't get that thing on; but once I tried your Camshaft tensioning method (or should I call it: your 'De-tensioning Method) to give the belt more slack for the Crankshaft setting for the Timing Belt - it worked like heaven's charm. Thank you so much for posting this video. Estimated time saved.... hours. Estimated frustration relieved.... immeasurable. :)

    An impact gun should help with the harmonic balancer because it wont spin the engine also you could probably just put the car in gear & put some pieces of wood behind the tires to make the engine stay put. Least that's what I do with my camaro. Preparing for a job like this for a buddy, and just some ideas I had.

    Hey Benjamin thank you very much! I've always pulled the AC compressor and the bracket but I'm going to try the long extension like you did I'm just concerned that I can't loosen that 12mm with the long quarter inch drive ext. I'll sure give it a try!

    Planning on doing the timing belt, all belts, pump and thermstat on my son's 2003 Tacoma. Watched many videos, one scared me when the bolt broke but that car had a lot of rust. Most other videos did not have problems with bolt removal. Some other videos, the good ones, showed what you talked about but its good to get verification from another person. The harmonic balancer removal is the only part that scares me! Not sure I want to try the engine starter "tool" technique to break the bolt free. Seems like a bad idea.

    Be sure when you take off the old belt...count the cogs on the new one....they both need to have the same cog count.
    Do not install...if the count is off.

    Thx.I'm going for it .going to rock my tool all night long.just messing around .don't have 1000 + to spend.asked a Roud and talked with a guy that is owner/operator of a Napa.the storefront took off but the 4 bay garage they put in the extra warehouse space of the building in back floundered.it's not technically open but drives Toyota trucks & he's into rock crawling as a hobby .Toyota hobby trucks,his buddy's too.one of them will be there today working on a Toyota of some sort.haven't met John guy yet but I'm hoping I'll get use of a lift be able to tap on his shoulder when I get stumped & learn at the same time.and not tools parts fluids are a 30 second walk away.May turn out to be completely different situation but I think it's going to be something like that.well see in an hr or so.and be ideal ...I think anyhow.beats laying in my travel driveway in the heat with my shitty tools and no ride to get whatever I've forgotten..thx again.

    I have replaced the timing belt water pump and tensioner on my 3rd gen 3.4 and the first time I spent about 3.5 hours to complete the job and the 2nd time just over 2 hours. I've always loved the simplicity of most repairs on the 3.4. I just replaced all 6 fuel injectors last week in under an hour and my advice to anyone who has to replace them is to only use OEM as I purchased a set of new Denso injectors on Ebay and they were counterfeit of which 2 were bad so I bit the bullet and purchased OEM for 5 time the price and had to do the job twice. Now she's ready for another 250,000 miles I hope.

      I did the same but, I had my factory injectors rebuilt by a place in California for $25 per injector.

    Why not put the lower part of the belt on first and then snake it up to the top gears ⚙️ and line up the marks. Haven’t done this yet so I’m just asking. I have a 2002 that needs a new belt soon.

    Do you need to replace harmonic balancer bolt?

  • @SolidOrangePaw
    @SolidOrangePaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Benjamin, did you replace the tensioner with a new part or did you use the old tensioner and just compress it as you tightened up the bolts? I see the pin in there and I am thinking there is no way to compress the tensioner and insert the pin prior to reinstalling - so this is why I am asking if the tensioner is new. Great ideas, thanks for taking the time to post!

    • @sweetwilliam49
      @sweetwilliam49 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you remove tensioner, put it in a vise, compress tensioners d reinsert the pin. A small Allen wrench will work. If you’re doing this job it’s best to replace the tensioner

    • @bjeff1981
      @bjeff1981  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you could do the cam seals and front crank seal, but as with so many things, if it's not broke, don't fix. You could also do your valve cover gaskets.
